It does mean they can go out and try to deal Korpisalo without worrying that Merzlikins will walk and leave them without a goalie. Having a bad goalie does make your team worse, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get another good goalie if you trade the guy(s) you’ve got, especially if they’re young-ish, because goalies are more likely to last into their late 30s and stay at a high level anyway, meaning they’ll still be good when the rebuild is done (probably why Anaheim has hung onto Gibson despite him being worth a king’s ransom and then some). It’s probably an overpayment for Merzlikins, but Columbus needs to do that to keep guys around, and it gives them the stability they need to pursue trading Korpisalo.

I don’t love the washed out logos, but damn, some of those are really good.
