I don't know how anyone can knock this deal for the Avs.
I like the return. I like the player and the pick is just icing on the cake.
I'd much rather have that than nothing. You look at what is left in their choices....ain't losing much now.

Exactly what I thought would happen before the Vegas expansion, but a few team made big mistakes instead of trading, at least it seems like they understood

I'm shocked this is the best offer Colorado got for Graves.

Not many teams can protected him, they probably got only 3-4 offers

I like this… I’m excited to watch the Devils next season, especially with more moves coming.

I'd give a slight edge to NJD, as that's a nice deal for a middle-pairing defenseman. Still, the trade is very beneficial to both teams, and COL's expansion draft got even easier!

Great pick up for devil’s exactly what they needed a defensive defensman like pk butcher severson a bit cj smith are all basicly offensive defensman also the player they got probably won’t crack their roster but now they don’t loose graves for nothin and cap space to maybe get in a agreement with the captain. Oh yeah also now avs are for sure goin 7 3 and 1

This is smart by the Devils. I don't think they're re-signing Murray and Graves is top 4 quality. Late second is definitely worth a couple seasons of Graves.

Meh. Pretty fair value wise

I kinda wish they waited until after the expansion draft to move him though

Why? He was a prime candidate to be picked. It's unlikely you'd have him post expansion draft.

It's either him or Donskoi and they both have similar value. If SEA picked Donskoi over Graves then COL could've got a bigger return since teams wouldn't have to worry about protection lists so there would probably be more teams in on him

True, I guess since you only lose one player to the kraken you could trade the other one post expansion draft, that makes sense now. Still, I think this is solid return for Graves.

Before posting this comment, I thought about this trade for a bit in comparison to the Nick Leddy trade.

Here are some key reasons why I think this is a fair trade and why I think the Nick Leddy trade was grossly unfair for Detroit.

1. Ryan Graves still has term left on his contract while Nick Leddy is a pending UFA.

2. If the Red Wings and Leddy are not able to work out an extension, the Red Wings will be left needing to make a trade yet again.

3. The Islanders was going to struggle with staying under the salary cap and Yzerman did them a huge, unselfish favour by making that struggle go away with a stroke of a pen.

4. The Red Wings spent a 2nd round pick to take on what was essentially a cap dump, even though Leddy is solid defenseman.

5. Colorado was never in any trouble with the salary cap and so, Graves should not be treated as a cap dump in this case.

6. The Devils get a solid defenceman with term and the Avs get a low 2nd + a mid-tier prospect that is capable of playing in the NHL.

I hope this clarifies things smile

Prefer this over losing him for nothing. At worst Maltsev looks like a 3rd liner and just hope the second can become something.
