I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pelech go tbh, and I hope that’s what happens. Canada doesn’t have much in the way of high end guys that can play defense/kill penalties, especially on the left side (Weegar would be another one, but he shoots right which matters more to Hockey Canada). Most of our lefts shot hopefuls are pure offense guys that are mediocre in their own end (Chabot, Rielly, Nurse, Chychrun [who has also had a horrendous start], and Theodore are all primarily offensive defensemen, bottom half defensively). I think most people expect a Theodore-Pietrangelo pair in the top 4, but Canada’s best defenseman is obviously Makar, and I think he’d do better with a stabilizing presence like Pelech, rather than a pure puck mover like Chabot or Rielly. Pelech-Makar / Theodore-Pietrangelo / Chabot-Hamilton is looking real nice right now, and realistic based on what Hockey Canada usually does (equal right and left shots, rewarding guys with a history there [Chabot was best D at the WJC. a few years ago, he’s a Hockey Canada favourite]). Hopefully Weegar-Ekblad would be the 4th pair, maybe even the 3rd pair (as much as I love Chabot, Weegar-Hamilton is probably the best 3rd pair we could bring though), but as I implied earlier, I doubt they bring Weegar to play on the left side. Ekblad is likely one of the top 4 RHD though. Maybe Rielly-Ekblad on the 4th pair. So yeah, I’d expect Pelech to be there, he’s definitely one of our 3 best LHD. I think Pulock is less likely, I don’t think he’s one of the 4 best RHD, and if they want a PK minute muncher they’d just slide Ekblad up. Regardless of what they decide, I think Canada’s D corps will be very interesting (Pelech-Makar / Theodore-Pietrangelo / Weegar-Ekblad would be the most elite and well-balanced top 6 we could bring in terms of offense, defense, and special teams imo).
