Insanely Fast Penguins

Description
The Penguins one up their team speed from their cup team by acquiring one of the most explosive and talented skaters in the league.

The Pens' brass realize that their #1 defenseman Kris Letang is not worth his contract while consistently missing massive chunks of the season year-after-year. Many teams would kill to have his services based on his talent alone. Colorado, a team dying for a #1 d-man are willing to give up the world for him. Letang could certainly pick up a much larger return, but given his health issues, the prices drop a bit, but MacKinnon is a haul that could potentially happen given the Avalanche's desperation, and the 2nd is a conditional based on how many games Letang plays.

The Letang move is made much easier to swallow with the emergence of Justin Schultz in his absence. They add Del Zotto as another sort of reclamation project that they have been known for. Jerabek is perhaps the best available European free agent d-man, similar to Zaitsev last year. Pittsburgh is the ideal place for him with the departure of Letang and an opening on the PP where he thrives in Russia.

Fleury finds his new starting job in Las Vegas after being selected in the Expansion Draft.

Sprong has the potential to be an elite scorer, and next to Geno, the sky is the limit for him. His tenacity on the puck and ability to play either wing is the perfect complement to Malkin and Phil.

No way we trade Letang, even for McKinnon. The only comparable value coming back would be McDavid or Matthews.
This D is nowhere close to being contender-level without Kris

OK this is coming from a pens fan. you are painfully overvaluing letang....youre hating the D core were playing with saying theyre bad without him but hes only played in 41 games.

To be honest, it has crossed my mind that they should move him. Considered elite, but too fragile. He holds quite a bit of value.

you are out of your mind if you think Letang is on the same level as those two.. There are probably at least 10 other defensemen I'd take over Letang and there probably isn't more than one or two forwards I'd take over either one of those kids...

This year is the first one when MacKinnon has more points than Letang since 13-14, and Letang's point per game pace is still better.
You may hate his health all you want, but you can't trade a top-5 D for a what, top-20, top-50 forward? Think back to Larsson for Hall trade: Mac is not much better than Hall, while Letang is miles ahead of Adam.

They are probably better on a pure skill vs skill basis, but if we are looking at value they would bring to the Pens team - they are not a huge upgrade over Letang.
I'm not saying this would be a fair deal - it would defenitely be unfair to Oilers/Toronto, but this is the kind of value you got give to make Pens move Kris

You're talking about Letang, who figures to play in about 75% of the games in a season because he's made of glass. You're saying he's as important as McDavid or Matthews? In essence, Letang is more valuable than Crosby? Because Crosby, Matthews, and McDavid are on the same plane with regards to value to the team's success. You're crazy to say that haha.

If you want speed, Byron and Larkin could be considered.
Not sure where McKinnon as a 3C came from.

Lmao what a silly comment. Letang is a star, anybody would be lucky to have him. With that said, come on now....McDavid really?

Hes a 30 year old Dman....what team is going to trade a 20-21 year old fwd for an aging Dmen...granted a good one, but he isnt going to be getting healthier as the years go by.

when healthy, letang is easily top 5 best D in the league. Pens are a better team with him then without him. I would not trade mackinnon for letang as a pens fan at all. with that being said, avs wouldn't make this trade either. why would a rebuilding team want to trade away the future of their team for a dman whose injury prone and almost 30? makes no sense for both teams. one good year of Schultz doesn't equal the 6 elite seasons letang has put up. pens D looks painfully weak without him. Definitely not cup level.

pens = win now = keep letang
avs = win tomorrow = keep mackinnon

"Sprong has the potential to be an elite scorer, and next to Geno"

Holy hell, PIT fans, chill out over Sprong. He has potential but he isn't Geno level, he won't even be on the opening night roster for PIT.

First off, this isn't meant to be a realistic lineup, more ideal imo. For sure, we will never trade Letang, and I agree that we are better with him than without, but we are 20-7-3 without him this season. His talent is certainly top 5, but his decision-making is just bad. That $7.25 million could be used elsewhere to help fill multiple holes in the roster. MacKinnon is a dream acquisition that will never happen, it's just something that I think could really push our forward group to the next level speed wise.
Also, our D today looks very similar to this hear, and while not ideal, we've made due with much worse.

I never said he was on Geno's level, I said next to him on the wing he has potential to be elite. His talent is there, that's undeniable, he just has tone put it all together.
