My One Concern with Jeff Gorton

Created by: MP55
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2022
Published: Feb. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
He just hired his former Director of European Scouting to be the Co-Director of Amateur Scouting. My only concern with this, the guys the rangers have drafted in the top 10, three of which are European. How much of this is scouting and how much of this is player development - which Gorton is now in charge of assembling for the Canadiens?

Would there lack of production be because of player development staff and they where thrown into the fire to soon

not an impressive resume but it could be a development problem as well.

First two are worrisome. Last two were consensus picks and more likely development issues due to lack opportunity for a while (top six had Kreider, Panarin, and Buch eating most of the winger time and almost all the power play time).

Kakko and Laf you have to discount. They were 1st and 2nd overall picks, there would be more questions if he DIDN'T take them than if he did.

Lias and Kravtsov are the interesting ones. NYR has an issue with developing young forwards. However, Kravtsov and Lias both wanted out because they weren't playing in the NHL. It might be a worry, but Gorton won't be making the decisions alone, so as long as there are other good, reputable scouts there working with him, you should be okay.

Player development. Laffy is finally getting some time in the top 6 and the last couple of games have been his best. Kakko too has been shuffled up and down the lineup but he has developed into a solid defensive forward so far and hopefully his offensive game develops. Krav is a head case and Lias was just a bad pick.

"MY ONE CONCERN WITH JEFF GORTON". I'd by concerned that new president is a former GM whose team constantly missed the playoffs.....hence all those high picks. Look at all those buyouts in effect dead cap. Seems like Gorton didn't know the value of players or the cap. Yeah, being president is different than GM, put I didn't see the attraction to Gorton.

Gorton was GM for 6 years, made the playoffs consistently before realizing the team wasn't good enough and blew it up... he rebuilt new york, if that's the path Montreal want to take (and they need to) he's proven he can do it.

I do think Gorton will be wise and this is why we have St-Louis and Hughes to access player psychological development, cuz 80% of the game is mental acquisition and 20% action. We need asap a new development director to fill Ramage duty, perhaps even another co-direction to split optics on the topic and strenght of each one in place. I think Danielle Sauvageau could be our first women after the Olympics to fill the need.

that's not a fair statement, the years the Rangers missed the playoffs were after the organization made it known they were going to tear it down and rebuild.
your statement is more fit for CNN.

defiantly has to do a lot with development, kaako and Lafreniere where obvious choices

he also had the same job in Boston where they drafted Bergeron, Marchand and krejci and Lucic

Yep this is a legitimate concern for me too. But with that said, look at the later picks, Lundqvist, Shesterkin, Miller, Jones, Buchnevich.

But yeah they haven't been good in the top 10 when it wasn't slam dunks like kakko or Laf.

I think if you give him minuses for Andersson and Kravstov, you have to give him plusses for Chytil & Nils Lundkvist in the later 1st. Neither are huge stars, but Chytil has slotted in as a solid middle-6 guy and Lundkvist has some top-4 upside to him.

I'd also give him a huge positive for his team-building - it was nuts that Dolan canned him. He inherited a good team (100+ points in his first two seasons as GM) that started to crater under Vigneault and had them back to having a winning record within 2 years. They're a definite playoff team this year with the big Drury moves being (basically) replacing Buchnevich with Goodrow and adding Ryan Reaves - so you have to give Gorton a big chunk of that credit.

I'd be very pleased that he was available if I was a Montreal fan.

Krav: disgruntled with poor attitude, we did not justice either.

          Lias: poor attitude, awful selection

Laf + Kakko: holy **** they’ll be fine, they’re still young, not every player is an instant impact, lack of opportunities given to them played a huge role in stunting development; however, both have drastically improved this year opposed to last. Production will come my god.
