What would you give up for William Nylander?

Dawson Mercer is the main piece I’d want from the Devils. Although, I’m open to any suggestions and proposals.

I agree. It was just the first # to pop into my head.
This thread was specifically for trade discussion. Not to debate Bratt’s contract.

What about Severson 50% retained, 22 2nd (pick 36rn), and a prospect not named Hughes or Holtz?

Not sure what I would offer the Leafs for Nylander. However, I will name the pieces that are off the table in any realistic deal for Nylander:

    J Hughes, L Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Mercer, 2022 1st, 2023 1st, Siegenthaler, Sharangovich, Severson.

    Everything else is available.

I think Severson would be on the table and Holtz would be off. Otherwise, yeah this is probably the correct list.

To get a very good piece, you’re gonna have to move at least something good lmao. You don’t get elite players through meh pieces

yeah i agree with this. this shows the difference between the armchair gm and the real gm. Trades like this (to get out of a rebuild) take risk, including giving up some assets. While I agree t hat the first five players on this list shouldn't be available, if Sharangovich is off the table for a clear upgrade, something is very wrong. Any player who has a ceiling lower than Nylanders should at least be able to be discussed.

That’s not how it works. Seth Jones got an absolutely insane return with 1 year less left than Nylander will. Claude Giroux and Ben Chiarot, both as a rental at the deadline, each got a 1st + more

Mercer has a very unique skillset, don't think Devils would move him for Nylander.

The only thing I would really be interested in doing is Severson retained +

I could live with that for sure.

However there are other wingers NJ will likely pursue that won't cost them a top 10 pick.

Seth Jones agreed to an extension immediately. Giroux went to a contender for a pick in 2024 or 2025. Chiarot hits people and GMs are dumb (and still went to a contender).

If the Devils aren't a good partner without those options on the table (Severson should be, and Holtz shouldn't), then that's fine. But they Devils won't be trading away pieces that fit in their core age demographic for someone not under contract in two years.

Which the Leafs don’t need. With Brodie, Holl, Liljegren, and the possibility of Lyubushkin coming back, Severson is of no need.

I don’t see a fit between these teams. And until Nylander is actually traded, I will never understand these rumours or fans wanting to trade him.

I don’t necessarily want Nylander traded. I was just curious as to where his value sat, and used NJD as an example.

I, too, don’t see much from New Jersey that would make Toronto trade Nylander. Nothing the the Devils would be okay with moving at least.

You wouldn’t be the only one, I just don’t get why media/fans are so quick to off load him.

He isn’t a perfect player (those players rarely exist) but trading Nylander would be a big mistake. The guy is 25 years old, in the prime of his career, he is durable (guy is never injured) and out of the big 4, he is the only one to constantly show up in the playoffs and produced. He is 3 goals away from tying his career high (31) already set a career high in points (69) with 10 games to go still.

I get this is a fun site to conjure up different ideas/trades but I’m not sure what the perfect Leaf team looks like for people. This is going to be the best regular season Leaf team EVER. The farm system is finally going to start adding guys.

This team is just getting started. Kyle deserves a **** ton of credit for sticking with this group. I just hope they repay him him a long playoff run.

A pending UFA 2nd pair defenceman and a 2nd for a point a game player? This is why you don't ask fans on Capfriendly to make offers.

Sure, but as I explained in this thread, the Devils won't be trading premium assets that line up with the age range of Jack and Nico for 2 years of Willy. He's a great player and he can probably get more than what the Devils would reasonably offer because his contract doesn't make sense for our situation.

No, it's not impossible. It's just a risk the Devils probably don't take without guarantees, as they're not a playoff team right now. If there was some way to ensure an extension (there isn't), then yeah that's a different story. But with the deal bringing him to UFA and the Devils not being a playoff team, its too risky to part with assets that more closely align with the Devils age group. Its not a lowball for Nylander because he's not worth more, it just doesn't make a ton of sense for the Devils right now.

Especially when there are likely to be comparable players available with team control

Here's the problem with trading 7m X 2 Nylander.....or any player with a similar contract. Leafs would want to trade Nylander for cap reasons...meaning little cap returned to the Leafs.
So that limits greatly limits the Leafs trade options. And if you a team like Jersey...yeah they would like Nylander but geez today's market they could sign a good UFA for 7m, and not give up anything in exchange. So I think Nylander's trade value, without taking cap back isn't that great.
Let's imagine the Leafs can only get a second rounder for Nylander, without taking money back. I know Leafs fans say that is ridiculous, but you have to look at as second rounder and 7m in capspace.
So maybe that 7m gets you Campbell and Lybushin resigned for multiple years and a second rounder in the trade. Isn't that a good deal for the Leafs?
