Can the Flyers be saved

Created by: Justin_LetsGoStars
Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2022
Published: Jul. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
-Sean Coutourier and Ryan Ellis should be back to start the season. Hopefully they aren't too affected by their injuries last season. Ellis had 4 points in the 5 games he played last season and should be a solid 2nd or 3rd pairing guy.

-Hayes hasn't been scoring a lot of points but his points per game ratio is very good, so if he can play a full season for CGY, he should put up some solid numbers for them.

-The team might need to look at trading Risto and possibly Ellis at the deadline, especially if they are playing well during the first half of the season. Sanheim is going to get a raise after this season and Philly has too much cap locked up in their D. After this season, they'll have $12.1M roughly in cap space.

-This team has playoff potential under Torts, which should help Hart and the core overall.

Trades
1.
PHI
  1. Kylington, Oliver [RFA Rights]
  2. Monahan, Sean
Additional Details:
I'm sure CGY wants Monahan out of CGY as he's been lackluster at his cap hit for the last few seasons. He's only 27 and could be re-signed for cheaper after this upcoming season. Kylington for some younger defenseman coming in.
CGY
  1. Hayes, Kevin
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
M-NTC is a 12 team no trade list. CGY getting Hayes would bolster their depth down the middle and would be a solid 2C for them.
2.
PHI
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (BUF)
BUF
  1. van Riemsdyk, James
  2. 2023 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
BUF has the cap space and could be looking to add for a semi-competitive team. No risk as JVR has one year left on his contract and could be traded at the deadline to a competitive team looking for a rental.

Buffalo has no reason to pay for JVR. If teams weren't willing to take his contract for less than a 1st 2 weeks ago, it seems doubtful they would suddenly pay a 2nd for him.

The situation is a little different now. Philly was trying to make space for Johnny, so teams were probably trying to low ball Philly for JVR. Also, many teams are probably waiting on Kadri to move to shore up their teams and see who is remaining. Moving JVR doesn't have to happen immediately either. I'm sure BUF is trying to be more competitive, especially since getting Tuch and getting higher in the points total. Their culture and team is changing for the better and might be buyers soon.

A first for jvr or you guys can keep him. It's 7 million in cap space. More teams should be looking at trading a first for whoever they sign, rather than using it to trade away a player.

Buffalo isn’t going to pay for JVR, but Ellis probably is done so not moving JVR would be fine for Philly. He put up 22 goals in the last 60 games of the year (after AV got fired) let him bring his value up and trade him at the deadline

Monahan Hayes is interesting. Hayes definitely is the much better player and is pretty much fairly priced, within a million of what he should be getting id say… I guess taking Kylington would be a good deal. He’d probably play with York on the 3rd pair

Would also clear cap next year or let Philly flip Monahan for like a 3rd if anyone needs a 4C

The funny thing is, our whole top 9 is already better than JVR. Doubt a team trying to be competitive is going to pay 7m and downgrade a position as well as give away a second in a great draft. I doubt he will play 4C.

I want to avoid being a troll here. So, as politely as possible, I am going to say Calgary would never take this deal. They are giving up a top 4 d man who outscored Dougie Hamilton last year, and 1 year of Sean Monahan's cap, to take on a 30 year old Center making upwards of 7MM a year for 4 more years and had the same amount of points as Kylington last year? Kevin Hayes is in steady decline. Philly would need to pay to have a team take that contract and it would be steep. It's that or you buy him out. I could see Monahan for JVR, since both are UFAs and it saves Philly some cap.

The best post yet so far in here haha. Yeah the Hayes one is pretty good. I'm not a Philly fan, just bored at work and I like to think I have interesting ideas. My thought process for Monahan is he could probably benefit from a change of scenery and someone like Torts will either make or break him. He could be a good depth C for cheaper or return to form. Either way, Philly could keep him in what would be a good trade or deal him at the deadline.

My thought process for BUF taking JVR is he only has 1 year left on his contract and he scores goals, especially on the PP. I think BUF might want to do that deal as it's low risk. But I'm just spit balling here.

BUF has the cap space, has 1 year remaining on his contract and his actual salary is $4M with a $1M bonus.

Interesting isn't the word...insane, is more apt. Hayes has never broken 50pts and makes over 7M for 4 more years. Monahan was injured and barely played last year and still put up half that total. I'd take 1 year of Monahan at his worst over 4 more of Hayes at his best. They'll have to pay Arizona a lot to take that contract off their books.

ARZ can't be spending any unneeded money for the next few years as they'll be losing revenue. My bet is the owner put a hard cap on spending so Hayes would be off the table, even though Hayes' actual salary is lower than his cap hit.

A JVR trade would look similar to the Pacioretty trade. JVR and a little sweetener for a thank you very much.

Im not sure where you got your numbers…
Hayes had 55 in 71 during the 2018-2019 season
He also was on pace for 53 this year… Hayes missed 20 more games than Monahan this year and put up almost 10 points more.
Hayes is also a lot more than just a productive player, which yeah he would’ve been close to 50 the two Covid seasons as well… I think 46 and 48 (might be wrong, just did quick math)
But Hayes is a solid 2-way player and a leader type guy… which let’s face it, the Flames just had their best two players bail because they didn’t want to play there, so a leader is very much what they need.

Hayes will probably be the Flyers captain this year, truly I’d ask for more from Calgary than a guy like Kylington whose had one decent year so far

I see VGK trades and brain bleach them as that should never happen. That trade is the result of poor management all around.

Ok, Kevin Hayes broke 50pts once (I didn't see the Winnipeg totals). Regardless, 7M for a plus 30 player who has never put up elite points, and is only going to decline over the next 4 years isn't a value add for Calgary. Kylington, is young and put up 31 pts with 2nd line minutes. His trajectory is going up. Besides, Calgary has Lindholm, and Backlund already. So what benefit is there for a 3C making 7M? Philly has a ton of bad contracts. It's not solvable in the next 2 years.

Hayes has been improving over the years actually, he also put up these numbers as a 3C behind coots and Giroux, but he’d be 2C in Calgary, Backlund would be 3C

Kylington has had one good year, it’s a risk and he is currently not signed for a reason. Chances are he is going. It would be a huge upgrade to the flames but I understand that you guys probably won’t be competing in the next four years, so if going full rebuild is the plan rather than a retool, yeah it doesn’t work for the flames

His stats would indicate otherwise. Backlund out performed him last year and is a solid defensive center at 5.3 a year. You're telling me Hayes is going to improve on his whopping 31pt season and earn his 7+M over the next 4 years? If the argument is that he is injured, then that doesn't add value. It just adds to the argument that he is in decline. I wouldn't sign Kadri for 7.1M for the same reasons. His style of play lends itself to injuries, and post 30...those add up. At least there is a chance Monahan has healed from his surgeries at 27. Even with he last 2 years of hip injuries he has a career average of 0.70 pts/g. Kevin Hayes has averaged 0.60 pts/g over his career, is 3 years older, has a a higher AAV and is signed for 4 more years. Plus Kylington! Calgary could trade kylington to any other team and not be in the hole like they would after taking this deal. It's completely one sided and certainly wouldn't make the Flames more competitive. It just puts them in cap prison for 4 extra years with nothing in return.

Okay, i can’t argue with you. Clearly you’re wearing tinted glasses. You think a guy who put up 39 in 82 out performed a guy who did 31 in 48??? You also argue that Monahan is closer to Hayes cause Monahan was injured… for less time than Hayes was…

Honestly, there’s no debate here, Hayes is a much better player than your 2 and 3 centres

I think career pts/g speak for themselves. Not to mention his bloated salary.
