There is nothing you can add to JT miller to get the islanders to trade Dobson. Pettersson is the only player isles would have interest in

Still wouldn’t be enough to pry Dobson from the isles

This is a monumental overpayment especially if Miller has an agreed upon extension at 7.5 mill. Miller is a top 20 forward in the league, Rathbone has little NHL experience but from past statistics projects to be a better D man than Marino, he is NHL ready with high upside. On top of that two first rounders and a 2nd. Miller is better off traded at the TDL for a 1st and a prospect.

This is obviously a huge overpay from VAN, but just like other Isles fans on here I understand the point you’re trying to make about Dobson’s availability.

A deal where the two principal pieces are Pettersson and Dobson would be much more realistic, but I doubt either team wants to do that.

I agree with both of you, I’m just saying that if Dobson were to be traded (I don’t think he will be), this is a “fine” package. Lekkerimaki is gonna be a stud, Miller is a good player now, Rathbone could be decent, and a 1st and 2nd round pick are added on top of that. I’d rather have Dobson, but you can’t complain about this package.

Exactly , it’s not worth it for any team to trade for Dobson because the price would be excessive to the point where it doesn’t make sense to trade for him

No way Van should trade away THIS much for one player. This is essentially 5 or 6 first rounds picks in terms of value. Terrible for vancouver

I would definitely complain about this package. In 2 years the most likely scenario is Miller will be a middle 6 wing being paid 8.5 mill per, Rathbone likely tops out as a 3rd pair D.

The Canucks pick will likely be in the 20-24 range and while Lekerimaki has the potential to be very good, there’s also risk he ends up like a Mike Hoffman type - not good at 5v5, but great on the PP.

Players like Dobson don’t come around too often. Young #1 RHD under the age of 25 are extremely rare , they are the unicorns of the NHL. You need to get a young star back in the deal for it to be worth it.

Young #1 RHD under the age of 25:
Mcavoy
Dobson
Bouchard
Makar
Fox

That’s it.

How do you figure that Bouchard and Dobson are #1 right shot D?

Both were in the top 20 among all defenseman in xGAR which is arguably the best metric for evaluating a defenseman's overall impact

Seider.

A sixth of the league's teams having a #1 RD that is 24 or younger is actually a higher rate than I would have expected. Considering there are a few younger players on the edge of it and several that would be included if we were talking 26 and under, I don't think young #1 RD is all that rare of a player classification.

#1 RHD are definitely the hardest types of players to find + develop. They are almost never included in trades and are a lot harder to replace than goalies, scoring wingers etc. Top line centers and #1 RHD are the hardest positions to fill.

Canucks need a RD. A long term partner for Quinn who isn’t a 3rd pairing defensemen that can’t really play defense. An elite RD like Dobson would be the perfect long term fit for Quinn, it can make them both really good players. And make Canucks blue line a lot faster, skilled, younger and better offensively and defensively.
