You're underestimating how much Arizona will ask to retain. Keep in mind that they only have three retention slots too, and they have their own guys to sell at the TDL.

Why? He's better than both Chiarot and Manson who got far better returns than this

Look around this site, there are plenty of far more attractive offers, even from Vancouver.

He should get a return similar to Hampus Lindholm.

I agree, but I don't think he'll garner as much as you might suspect due to his defensive deficiencies. Whether warranted or not, both those examples are "playoff-style" Dmen and that has inflated value.

Defensive deficiencies? His defensive game is easily his the best part of his game. What makes Manson more of a "playoff-style" dman than him? Savard the same way?

In my experience, he's prone to pretty glaring mistakes and suffers from coverage issues in the slot. Odd that you'd call his defensive game the best part of his game given he's always struck me as a very standard two-way puckmover. Perhaps I'm off-base or perhaps his game has evolved recently but I've seen enough of him to justify holding this position.

As for what differentiates him from those others, it's namely physicality and likely some perceived differences in slot coverage. Traditional defensive Dmen tend to get the benefit of the doubt surrounding slot protection whether they're actually more effective at it or not and, given how important that aspect of play is in the postseason, it seems to push what contending teams are willing to pay upward.

Woof, need to save this for the trade deadline as a ice cold take.... Severson for an overpriced 4th liner the Nucks pray to dump, a decent prospect, and a 2nd, for Severson. Okay bud....You aren't even accounting for the fact you would have to pay to dump Dickinson alone.

He's absolutely prone to glaring mistakes, and it's a well documented form of implicit bias that makes people unable to see past those. He is a legit two way top 4 RHD, which is a hot commodity in today's market.

Lotta whiplash in this one. A comical underpay for Severson, IMO - Karlsson finally looked like a prospect in his age-22 season in the SHL, so maybe he turns into something? But Dickinson is a straight up cap dump at this point, and I think that 2nd you're including would cover the cost of moving him. So a B-tier prospect straight up for Severson? Devils pass, and hold on to him through the TDL when they can get a a strong offer from a contending team.

The whiplash comes in when you go from offering a bag of peanuts for a top-4 RHD to spending a ton of assets on a 34-year-old Milan Lucic (10-11-21 in 82 GP last year) and a 33 year old Jamie Benn (18-28-46 in 82 GP last season). Admirable that both of these guys are still playing every night in their mid-30s, but this is a ton to give up - Tanner Pearson was 14-20-34 in 68 GP last year and has 2x$3.25M left, and you're giving up him and a pair of 4ths to get Lucic at 1x$2.625M? Pearson is still useful enough that you can probably move him with retention next summer if you need the cap space or roster spot. And while Benn is still more productive than either of those guys, he's got 3 years left on his deal - so Dallas is left holding the bag on 3x$4.75M all for a 2nd rounder, and Arizona eats 3x$2.8725M for a pair of 3rds? I think both sides nix this deal - I don't think Benn's production is worth that many picks going out, but I also don't think it's worth it to Dallas to eat that much dead cap just for a pick.

I absolutely agree, but my point was, despite being worth more, I don't think he'll garner more than guys like Manson and Chiarot at the deadline due to this bias you mention alongside the "playoff hockey" matter I mentioned.

That may be, but the asking price starts with a 2023 1st. All other offers are ignored if anyone is willing to pay

With how deep the draft supposedly is supposed to be I say 2023 1sts will be a hell of increase in value, Severson is great but unless an extension is in place a 2023 1st might be too big a pill for some GM’s to swallow, 2024 & 2025 Sure just not 2023 with the look of the deepness of the draft

If the Devils retain and the pick is gonna be in the 20s or lower, I don't think that will hold much sway
