Rantanen is arguably a top 15 player in the league, Hischier might not be a top 15 C, COL isn’t doing that without NJ adding a lot.

If COL were dumb enough to do that NJ would be even more foolish to turn it down. Rantanen is career ppg player even better in the playoffs, only 2 yrs older than Hischier who has 1 60 pt season. They aren’t remotely in the same category of players.

As nice as it would be to have Rantanen on Devils, NJ isn't trading Nico for Mikko.
2 years of the winger vs possible entire career for young center.

Bro, Hischier's #13 will hang in rafters some day. No way we are trading him.

I can't imagine Col trading Rantanen but if they did want to do this trade they aren't getting anything significant on top of Hischer, they will be overpaying for a prime position and the player with term.

It's 2 years Vs 4 years. Not 2 years Vs an entire career.

It's about solving 2C long-term. Also note that the $2m cap difference allows you to keep Toews and re-sign him when the cap rises in 2024.

Btw not saying I would do this trade. Just an idea to think about. One way or another Avs need to lose a good player due to the cap in 2023.

Avs won't trade Mikko. If they discover that Newhook can't handle 2C, they'll either make Rantanen a permanent 2C or trade for a lesser player (along the lines of the nauseating amount of Dvorak and Bennett proposals we've seen, some of which I'm guilty of).

Yep on paper it appears Rantanen is the superior player. But he has been surrounded by superior players. I can't see him being a 90 point player in Jersey,,,,,maybe not an 80 point player.
Gotta think Jersey keeps their centre, who is cheaper and has two more years of control.
But if the trade goes through....maybe Hischier gets Kadri numbesr.....80 or 90 points, and Rantanen gets 80 in Jersey. Doesn't look good for Jersey at all.

Rantanen would feast playing next to Hughes. He's long disproven the idea that he's a product of MacKinnon, as his production doesn't drop away from MacKinnon (quite the opposite in fact).

The Devils really don't a offensive centre except for Hughes if Hiroschier is traded. The only offensive line the Devils would have would get points but be swarmed defensively nightly.

Hischier is the leader of this team. I would be very surprised if Hischier goes anywhere for decade.

Keeping him is best route for us.

Mercer, Sharangovich, Haula, Boqvist, Macleod? We have centers to spare…but Jack and Nico are our foundation. If we move one of them, the whole thing crumbles.

That’s entirely not true. Rantanen is SIGNIFICANTLY better, he is one of the unique wingers that can drive play, contracts don’t matter when guys like him get traded it’s about value. The value gets met if some piece needs to be added one way or the other to make the cap work it’s done then, but make no mistake no team in the league is trading Rantanen for Hischier straight up not without something significant being included because his contract and position don’t matter because he isn’t even remotely in the same tier.

Who cares. I’ll take Rantanen and whatever Newhook produces all day everyday of the week over Hischer, Newhook and the cap space. Rantanen is a guy that is truly elite, arguably in the top 15-20 players in the league, you don’t give one rats ass about anything else except having one of those guys you go cheap everywhere in the bottom 6 the d outside of Makar and Byram. Pay your best players and figure out the rest, I’m not trading an elite guy so I can feel better about the depth chart.

If Colorado is approaching NJ with the trade, they are going to get the short end of the stick or NJ will just decline. There needs to be a benefit in it for them, which is getting the better player. Hischer is a 1C, so that does matter and still a star even if he's not a superstar like Rantanen. Rantanen has 2 years less in term vs Hischer, that matters for NJ because there's the associated risk. Both players are young and have room to grow, but Hischer is the younger, cheaper player with the long-term and plays the most important position. NJ doesn't have a replacement for him in terms of skillset either.

So, it makes no sense for them to give Hischier+ a 1st for Rantanen alone for example. Perhaps something like Hischer+Holtz for Rantanen+Newhook, but any time a superstar is being traded their's a high chance that teams don't give full value if he's not an RFA, locked, or play a prime position.

COL isn’t, wouldn’t, whatever your choice of negative. COL isn’t initiating a trade saying hey Hischier for Rantanen. That’s so much nonsense about superstars, you’re conflating superstars with good players. Rantanen is a superstar, he is truly elite. Those kinds of players (the top 15, top 20 players in the league) have an entirely different set of rules.
