The Fifth Element

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 5, 2022
Published: Nov. 5, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Supplementing the core four with the fifth element. Who is that? Someone who can score, hit, fight and play on multiple lines. An Evander Kane or a Tom Wilson would be perfect for this team. Leafs are hoping Matthew Knies will grow into that role, but this team needs to add a couple of veterans who can play that way.

The cap will go up in a few years. And for next year Kerfoot, Holl, and Engvall will be off the books. Plus, Murray can potentially be bought out. So it is feasible to take on his contract.

No thought to the Leafs cap for 8m Miller next season (and for seven years), nor the cap this season when Murray returns from LTIR. Lowry is "nice" but certainly not a difference maker. And at age 29, likely he isn't going to be any better for the next almost four seasons.

Would you rather have Miller in the line up, or the combination of Kerfoot, Holl, and Engvall who roughly make 7.5 million combined?

It is an easy choice for me.

You aren't getting Miller at 4 mil. You clowned yourself saying you wouldn't want that contract though.

You're kidding aren't you? How do you justify 8m X 7 30 year old Miller next season, and even Lowry for three full seasons at 3.25m. Bad value for the Leafs especially at the expense of Robertson two firsts.

Then the ridiculous argument that the cap is going up. Well it can go up, but ALL players will be getting raises. Bottom enders and RFA and UFAs,

It's the next seven years at 8m that doesn't seem great for the Leafs or any team.

Odds are you can probably get 4-5 great years out of it before he regresses to where Blake Wheeler is right now for the last few. That seems like a perfectly fine trade off. Also 8M won't be a bad cap hit at all when we are over 100M cap in ~4 years

The idea that Vancouver would retain $18.2 million on Miller's new contract in return for a future first and Robertson is pie-in-the-sky, never mind his actual on-ice value as a rental. So the reality is that next season, you'd have less than $13 million to spread among 6 forwards, 2 defensemen and 2 goaltenders. Check the "Long Term Outlook" tab.

I don't understand the fascination among a certain segment of Leafs Nation for J. T. Miller, when it seems obvious (at least to this outsider) that what needs to be done is add to the bottom 4 of Sandin, Liljegren, Giordano and incomer.

So then you'd have about $12.8 million to spread among 6 forwards, 2 defensemen and 2 goalies, as my original post noted. And assuming that you'd like to have (i.e., pay) a good goalie, that's probably going to cost you at least $3.8 million, so you'll have about $9 million for 9 roster slots -- and that's without re-signing Michael Bunting, whom I'd consider one of your core players, or Matt Murray.

That's an off-season problem. Leafs have to ice the best possible team this year to try to win the cup.

"Win the Cup"?!?!? With that defense you have here??? Between them, Holl, Liljegren and Sandin have 24 playoff games' experience. Then you have 39-year-old Mark Giordano and 35-year-old Jordie Benn, who are, to put it charitably, aging veterans. That's a back half that will be lucky to win two rounds, let alone four.

Have a look at what sports books are handicapping Toronto's Stanley Cup chances at, and be realistic. Spend the money/assets more wisely. Miller not only won't win you the Cup this season; his $8 million cap hit would preclude you from winning it anytime in the near future because you won't have enough money to add to Giordano, Liljegren, Sandin and newcomer plus sign a first-class goaltender.

By the way, Aube-Kubel just got claimed off waivers.

yeah, not trying to be a jerk or anything, but nothing about this lineup (even with adding Miller/Lowry) screams Cup winner to me. The D is incredibly shaky - that third pair is terrifying, and your top 4 is two very good D (Rielly/Brodie) and two D who weren't trusted with any ice time in the playoffs last year (Liljegren/Sandin). I appreciate splitting them up so you can try and shelter them, but the fact that you have to try and shelter at least one skater on each of your D pairs is worrying, to say the least. And Ilya Samsonov has looked good but has no playoff success - he's 1-6 in he playoffs with a GAA hovering near 3.00 and a save percentage that barely clears .900. Mortgaging your future so you can hitch your wagon to JT Miller's 7x$8M extension while also having the Tavares/Marner/Matthews/Nylander/Rielly deals on the books is going to make it extremely hard to field a good roster over the next couple seasons - you're gonna have to wait til Tavares is gone before you can splurge on anything else, and by then you could have potentially lost both Matthews & Nylander, if they're tired of treading water in Toronto.

It's a win-now move for a team that doesn't have enough chips to go all in. I don't think the Leafs should punt on this season, but I do think they should play it conservatively and not panic trade their picks away. The pipeline is pretty barren, and they're going to need more ELCs in this lineup if they want to keep the high-priced players in house. Getting Miller and his $8M extension are going to make that much more difficult.
