We all knew with how things are in Ottawa rn they had to extend Zub as man if he left their already bad season would have been a disaster

Or basically the summer of Dorion would have become the fall of Dorion

Still Zub should have explored the market could have got more and got Ottawa to potentially give him a bigger deal

Good signing for an excellent complementary defenseman.

The minimum teams get a top 4 D for is pretty much 3 years x 4 point something million. This is pretty close to that for a RHD who has proven to be a lot better than a low end top 4D. I think it's fair to assume that the announcement about the salary cap barely rising gave Zub incentive to play it safe and get a contract done.

The Senators lucked out and avoided any real ramifications for bridging Zub two years ago. If you average out both contracts, it works out to 6 years with a 3.9M AAV. I suspect that a 6 year deal signed 2 years ago wouldn't have been for much less than that. In that respect, this signing is going to have a lot of Sens fans breathing a sigh of relief.

Did not think he was coming in a penny under six

He doesn't have the resume to get 6.

The reason the Sens got him for this low is because of the immense risk for Zub had be not signed. If he did not sign, he was going to get dealt to a playoff team. Let's say he isn't as good of a fit in their system and isn't used as heavily as he was in Ottawa, teams would then be cautious about signing him to #2-#3 type money.

The announcement that the salary cap is barely going up likely sealed the deal. This is his first set for life type contract. If he goes to a playoff team and does well, maybe he gets an extra 2 years of term but probably not much more in AAV. There is a pretty consistent ceiling of defenseman getting around 6M (Weegar, Lindholm, etc). Zub doesn't have that kind of resume.

That's fine, you're allowed to be blinded by your homer bias

personally i think it should go to Jarmo Kekalainen every time it's given out but Pierre Dorion has really made a solid case for the Jim Gregory this year. It's gonna be a close race between Pierre and Brad Treliving.

Not giving either of them they award because their teams have been a*s

He's probably peaked, which is not great news. However, the cap should be going up, so this should be fine over the next four years.

I am curious to see how they fit Pinto, Debrincat and Sanderson under the cap without blowing their depth in the next 2 seasons

Tell anyone on defence not named Zub, Chabot or Sanderson to leave

I said "no" right now, but we'll see, we'll just see how his speaking russian to the new draft choice fits in with the kid fitting into the Sens plan.

What an excellent deal for the team. Thought he'd be way closer to 5mil. Personally if this is what he got at 4 years, I'd have liked them to go to 5 or 6 and see if they could have gotten him even cheaper on AAV.

Still though, nothing to complain about, what a great Christmas gift to sens fans

This deal is good but it would definitely cost more for more years and in turn, making the AAV higher than this deal is.
