Who says no

Team: 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 14, 2023
Published: Feb. 14, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
At the very least, this team is going to the Cup Finals. It's win-now.
Trades
1.
EDM
  1. Benning, Matthew
  2. Karlsson, Erik ($4,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
San Jose retains around 35% for Erik Karlsson, who immediately improves the Oilers blueline. While some may say this isn't a good fit, another superstar along with McDavid and Draisaitl helps improve the Oilers no matter what. Matt Benning also included because he's a solid and cheap RHD to replace Ceci
SJS
  1. Barrie, Tyson
  2. Bourgault, Xavier
  3. Ceci, Cody
  4. Foegele, Warren
  5. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
  6. 2025 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Barrie, Foegele and Ceci are cap dumps, but Barrie has enough value for San Jose to flip for another additional mid-round pick.
Bourgault was drafted in the 1st round in the 2021 draft. Solid prospect and trending well in the AHL currently.
San Jose was looking for 3 1sts for Karlsson, and I believe 2 1sts and Bourgault basically fulfills that.
2.
EDM
  1. Chychrun, Jakob
Additional Details:
Chychrun is a top 4 LHD making just 4.6M for the next 3 years. That in itself is very valuable.
ARI
  1. Kulak, Brett
  2. Petrov, Matvei
  3. Schaefer, Reid
  4. Yamamoto, Kailer
  5. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Kulak is there to make the cap space work.
Yamamoto is a good young player for Arizona.
Schaefer was drafted in the 1st round in 2022 and played for Canada in the WJC. Petrov is also a solid prospect who's currently top 3 in the OHL in scoring. Arizona also gets another 1st.
3.
EDM
  1. Vrána, Jakub ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Vrana was on waivers a few weeks ago and no one claimed him. Still a solid finisher which is what Edmonton needs in their top 6.
DET
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
  2. Savoie, Carter
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Puljujarvi gets a change of scenery

not enough for that much retention, and the 23' 1st would be going to SJ

That's massive retention for that return. That kind of retention you need to include Bouchard and another pick.

Everyone who isn't an Edmonton fan says no. Vrana is on a 6 game point streak and has 10 points in his last 9 games. We could see him back in Detroit shortly and I think it would be foolish to move him before seeing how he does in the NHL.

Hard to believe that San Jose would trade Karlsson without getting a 2023 first, or that they would pay him $13.65 million not to play for them.

And you DO realize that you're actually ADDING cap to San Jose?

I feel like I need say this every time I see Benning in these. HE IS NOT AN EXTRA THROW IN PEICE

Dude is middle pairing shutdown d-man on a 4 YEAR $1.25 M CONTRACT (having a surprisingly good offensive season as well). He should be getting us a 1st + on his own. That contract is gold for a team that needs value d-men.

Also that retention is absurd on EK.

Detroit declines. No interest in Pool Party. If Vrana had no value then you wouldn't want him.

-San Jose would easily pass this. I'm sure Mike Grier knows he'll have to retain on Karlsson, but I don't think he's going to take back THREE bad contracts on top of that. I could see him taking back Barrie to do his dollar-store EK65 impersonation, but this deal has them retaining $22M total *and* taking back an additional $13.65M in cap over the next three seasons. Bourgault is an interesting prospect to add, but making them wait til 2024 for any draft capital isn't helping this trade. Make at least one of those 1sts happen this year, and if you're going to dump both Foegele & Ceci on San Jose as well (and take back a cheaper, superior RD2 in Matt Benning on top of that!) you're going to have to add something significant - Philip Broberg or Evan Bouchard level, I'd say.

-Kulak is signed 3 more years at $2.75M and adds a ton of negative value to this trade for Arizona. Yamamoto is more palatable, because even with the higher AAV he's younger and would fit in with their core better (or, conversely, would be easier to flip out if they don't like the fit.) Schaefer and Petrov are B+ prospects - they've got decent shots at being NHL regulars but aren't really slam-dunk superstars in waiting. I think if you're dumping as much cap on Arizona as you're doing here, it needs another piece.

-I get the thinking here but I still think Detroit would decline. At this point, Vrana's value is basically at its lowest - they could easily get this type of value this summer if nothing changes. I would wait it out, give Vrana some NHL ice time once you're out of the playoff picture and can afford him the space to get back into NHL form, and see if he pops off - it's a no-lose scenario for the Wings, in my eyes.

I don't hate the vrana trade but we have no idea what's going on with him. Anything could happen.

He is being primed for a trade. From my understanding, both sides want to see an end to the relationship. Really bizarre stuff, but it really looked like the organization was going to make an example of Vrana and let him rot in the AHL.
