Explain to me why Gavrikov is worth more than these guys

Created by: tkecanuck341
Team: 2023-24 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 3, 2023

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I see all these ACGMs with Gavrikov going for $5M and sometimes $6M+ on long term extensions. He's a quality defense-first defenseman. The going rate for the best of those guys is roughly $4M-$4.5M AAV.

Comparables are on the active roster.

Monetary value is different for UFA's compared to RFA's because of basic market economics. Namely demand.
The others didn't have the track record or rep that Gav has

Well for starters many of those players signed those deals when the cap was lower. Look at percentage of cap.

Also, several of those deals were RFA deals, not UFA deals giving teams some leverage

True for some, but Manson signed for $4.5M as a UFA after winning a Stanley Cup.

But having said where do you see Gavrikov in order of value as players? I’m guessing 6-7th

Who was the last defensive defenseman to get $6M+? The only one that I can think of that got anything near that is Vlasic, and I think pretty much everyone would agree that it was a dramatic overpayment.

I thought he would be in line for at least a Lindholm and right handed

That and he was older than Gavrikov will be this summer. I would say the quality of their play going into the trade deadline was about the same tho.

Gavrikov may get more because he's got the pedigree that Manson didn't (note that Manson didn't fetch a 1st round pick last year) and because he's played really well in LA thus far (unlike, say Ben Chiarot or David Savard when they went to their Florida teams). Also, look at the UFA class. If you don't sign Gavrikov, your options are pretty thin for a middle pair LHD in UFA, so that can drive the price up.

Not that I personally would want to be in the business of signing Gavrikov to a 5+ million dollar deal.

There also isn't a lot of quality on the UFA market this year, and the agents for guys like Gavrikov and Graves will leverage that.

I think Gavrikov is a good fit in LA, but the KIngs might be better off looking for blueline help on the trade market.

Why? Lindholm has several 10g and 30p seasons under his belt. Gavrikov has never topped 5g and has only reached 20p once in his career.

I think that some desperate GM would likely pay it, my argument is that he isn't worth it.

If Gavrikov wants more than $4.5M, I think the Kings should let him walk and look elsewhere.

Columbus needs exactly what Gavrokov offers, a middle-pair LD with a defensive talent to go with Adam Boqvist, and we're content to let him go because the two sides couldn't agree on a contract. Someone will absolutely overpay him this summer.

Yeah that's what I would do too. He's not the kind of player that I would make a big commitment to.

But you're also talking to a guy that thinks it's insane that Mike Reilly isn't playing in the NHL right now so what do I know.

I think so too. I just hope that team isn't the Kings, because I think anything over $4.5M will be a huge mistake.

The cap is hitting 90M+ very soon, the closer the play is to that timeline and the more desperate a team is to sign him(supply/demand) means there more leverage for the player.. now if Gav is the 8th best UFA D man and there not much demand for D.. he will be cheap.. safe to say there’s demand and he’s much closer to the top Dman than the 8th.

Graves and Orlov

I guess I don't really see a lot of overlap in the market for Orlov and the market for Gavrikov. Orlov is the top of the market. I feel like he is going to be seen as a top of the lineup defenseman and be >5.5 million on a short term deal regardless of anyone else in the market, and he's got the malleability to play either side, and his age is going to make him appeal pretty much only to contenders, If a team misses out on Orlov they may pivot to Gavrikov but I don't think there's going to be anyone other than the Kings doing it the other way around.

Graves is the only other guy that really strikes me as the guys you use to bid against each other, and both are young enough for a non-contending team to talk themselves into a long term deal, so there will be quite a few suitors.

Gavrikov is proven as a top-4 LD who can play both with Matt Roy or eventually in the shut down role with Durzi, Spence, or Clarke. Looking at UFAs which players fill that role at $5M or less?
