Stevie says thanks but no thanks. Granlund looks awful and would just take up space down the middle. We love picks here, but I certainly think Granlund is just too bad to consider.

Nobody wants Granlund. You'd have to give a lot more than a 2nd for Detroit to take him.

Detroit passes, No use for Granlund.

Petry's family is in Michigan. His Dad is from San Diego and a former Tigers pitcher who lives locally in Detroit. Petry isn't waiving for Anaheim when he wants to be near his family in Metro Detroit.

Was his dad any good? Knew Petry was from Michigan and went to MSU but didn't know his dad played in the MLB.

I'd take a 2nd for Granlund retained. Worst case is 1.8 dumped in the minors. Next year won't matter with all the cap space.

Yup his Dad Dan Petry was one of Detroit's better pitchers in 1984, When the Tigers won the World Series he now does color analyst for the Tigers.

Honestly at 2.7M it's not that bad. He's actually not bad as a defensive forward. He's better on the wing but can play centre if needed. He wasn't awful in Nashville but for some reason he just doesn't fit in Pittsburgh. I feel if we did acquire him we would have to move out Zadina or someone else fringe to make room.

Easiest way to get rid of Granlund's contract is buying it out. A buyout will cost $833k next season and $1.833M the 3 years after that. That's fairly reasonable compared to the cost of dumping him, especially with the cap going up quite a lot in the next few seasons.

Not a fan of getting rid of Petry without getting a decent replacement RHD. I don't trust Rutta or Stetcher with increased minutes if Letang is out for a while. I do with Petry. Petry was a legit 2nd pairing D this season, even though he's overpaid. We only had 1 legit top 4 LHD last season. Adding Girard will take some of the burden off of Petry, which I think will benefit both Petry and the team's success. Like with Granlund, moving him in a trade isn't going to be easy if we tried.

DOC, Poehling, Nylander probably all get roster spots. Maybe Puustinen or Poulin get time as well. All the UFAs in the bottom 6 take up their spots. If the youth doesn't play, they won't get better, and I think they'd have a decent shot of producing like the players in our bottom 6 for less money, letting us retain Zucker. Granlund and Petry already add $5.3M in dead cap. A decent chunk of that would go to Petry being back, but I think we'd have a better top 4 and more cap space if Granlund is bought out and we keep Petry over Stetcher.

I like some of the ideas here, though. Bertuzzi would be great, and I like Engvall if we can afford him. Girard trade makes sense for both sides IMO, and I think the value is fair, but I'm not exactly an Avs fan so I don't know what they want for him.

Rather just bet on Zadina hoping he learns to score.

You can still gamble on Zadina and put Granlund in tbe minors as a call up. If someone wants him on waivers, they get him .

Dan Petry was the #2 starting pitcher on the 1984 World Series winning Detroit Tigers. Jack Morris was the ace. Petry went 18-8 that season. IIRC he won 19 games the year before.

He's 64 years old now. The current Detroit Tigers could use him. 😆

That isn’t getting Girard. They’ll let Toews walk in FA before giving away Girard which that trade is.

They should just trade Toews rather than trying to re-sign him - he's getting old and will want too much term and money. They should get some young forwards from some team that has a surplus to restock up front.

Mr. Tiger Al Kaline. He once turned down a raise. True story. I used to love listening to George Kell and Al Kaline when I was a kid growing up in the 80s.

George: Al why did we trade Benji (Oglive)?

Al: Uh I don't know George

George: Yeah

George: Al the Tigers just released Chris Pittaro. Why is that?

Al: Well George he's a really good kid but he just couldn't hit.

George: Yeah

Al: George I really look forward to going to Baltimore to visit my lovely sisters

George: Yeah. Well the Tigers are playing the Orioles ball club next week. It's Mickey Tettleton bobblehead night. Tickets are still available. Al Did you ever have a bobblehead?

Al: I don't believe I did, George.

George: Yeah. Uh Sparky, will Walter Terrell be with the Tigers next season?

Sparky: No

George: There's a base hit to left centre!

Stadium announcer: Now batting. Tony Phillips

George: Tony the Tiger!

Al: I'd say he's good but not great, George

George: Yeah

I could have warned you. You are going to get the same:

"Granlund is bad and needs a 2nd attached to move"
This is a lie. He is overpaid by about 2MM but is a perfectly fine 3rd liner. Eating 2MM would net a return without attaching picks to him.

"Petry is the worst! He needs a 1st to move him"
Also a lie. He is overpaid by 3MM (based on his last 2 years performance) bit again if you eat 3MM he is a fine second pair defenseman. This should also net a return with no additional picks attached.

Meanwhile, the same people will defend Forbort or Edmundson as "quality defenseman"

Your Petry trade is an appropriate return. Granlund would net something similar. I don't know about the destinations though.

The Col trade probably wouldn't happen. I think they would make other moves first.

Other thoughts:
Bert wants more cash than that per year
Get rid of Rutta. He can be easily replaced and it would free up the cap space needed for a realistic season.

Girard return is at least what Hronek got(1st and 3rd). He won't be traded until Toews is signed

Detroit passes (just buy out Granlund)

Petry doesn't waive for Ducks, so that's out.

Avs take that i would assume.

Bertuzzi is a no, he could've signed better than that with the wings i believe.

Don't hate the bottom 6, it'd be even better if you bring Poehling back and scratch Carter

Overall I think it's a pretty decent team. A few comments:

DET probably takes that but you're better off just buying out Granlund if you want to get rid of him. You'll free up more cap space and keep the pick. I think that saves almost an extra 1.5mil than what you did.
Petry won't waive for Anaheim - so you'd need to find another location. And if you're retaining 3mil on him, you're better off just dumping Rutta and keeping Petry - because at that point the salaries are pretty similar and Petry is significantly better. It's only an extra 500K to keep Petry over Rutta in your scenario. I'd sign Poehling or DOC for the 4th line over Carter and bench him. Nylander has already been signed to a one way contract - so he has to make this roster. So I would probably scrap Donato and move Rust to the 3rd line. Also, I'd try to see if I can fit a guy like EROD in over Eller - he's over the hill
