This goes for everyone bashing the Helley trade, what do you think a year-in-year-out top 3 goalie is going to cost? Goalies that are that good very rarely get traded and when they do it's for a lot. And getting a 40 goal scorer at 3 mill for a year in Schief is very valuable. He is money in the bank 30 goals and point a game in most seasons. Sure he is probably a bit of a jerk in the locker room but when did NHL teams ever care about that if you're good. Schmid has been very good in a small sample size but I wouldn't put his value at a blue-chip goalie prospect level. And isn't there a chance Sharangovich doesn't even get qualified because of his QO? What would have Carey Price gotten in a trade at 29 years old? Because that is what helley is right now.
There are three comps with varying returns for the Jets trading Hellebuyck:
- Cory Schneider, at two years remaining of his deal at the time got the Canucks #9 overall.
- Kuemper (50% retention), rental goalie for a cup run got the Yotes a 1st rd pick and 2nd/3rd tier level prospect.
- Fleury, reigning vezina winner dealt to the Blackhawks for future considerations
This indicates that it will be very difficult to trade a world top 5 goalie for anything close to what you're suggesting.
Nemec is probably the best currently drafted prospect in the world, these guys are never traded.
As for Scheifele, I agree that he's good but Mercer is at least as good as him at this point in time, if not better already. Mercer will certainly be the better player between the two come October and, unlike Scheifele, he's under team control for the foreseeable future whereas Scheifele is a rental.
The only thing dealing Mercer for Scheifele accomplishes is getting a whole lotta older and setting 2m worth of cap space on fire.
