giving 8 years to a 29 year old dman, giving a 4 by 4 to erik gudbranson, trading 1st round pick for provy when there is still a good change they could use that pick to further their rebuild.

Answer the question. Had they re-signed him would it have been an overreaction?

Also, no they didn't. They refused to cave to his demands.

To the deal he got? I think it was an overpayment but the term at least makes it acceptable

You've lost first name privileges with Dr. Kekalainen.

If JT Miller struggled to lock down a C spot with Vancouver, there's 0% chance he gets moved for 3OA.

Carlsson/Fantilli are about as guaranteed as prospects come.

Lol Dr. Kekalainen it is. Dont ignore that it is miller and 11th to move back 8 spots. I think they should stick with the pick but he just worries me that he constantly tries to speed up the rebuild. Like Ottawa in a sense and look how that worked out for them with debrincat

I think much of it stems from how JD was cryptic and didn’t say they’re drafting a center, but said they’re “getting a center.”

This deal is horrible though, only reason 3OA should be in play from Vancouver would be if Pettersson was available

Ok, so the point is, if re-signing him wouldn't have been an overreaction then trading the return they got for him for a cheaper, better defenseman is not an overreaction.

Next point. Signing one of the best defensive UFAs available to what will be a perfectly reasonable contract as the cap rises after you've set a franchise worst goals against record two years in a row is a good long term move, not an overreaction.

Last point. When your team full of young, promising players is getting ****kicked by goons time after time, bringing in a player like Gudbranson at a fair value contract is not an overreaction.

If Jarmo were trading away players like Mateychuk, Jiricek, Sillinger, Johnson, Marchenko, or the 3rd OA pick to bring in these players then sure, you'd have a point. But he hasn't so you're wrong.

Look at their prospect pool and then you will understand why they made the moves they did. They have an extremely young roster and had tons of prospects/picks. The picks they traded weren’t going to ever crack their roster so it makes sense to get rid of them

Very debatable that provy is better... dont use the team argument because gavrikov played for columbus all year. just because you trade for provy does not mean he wont leave in 2 years if you look at dubois, debrincat, etc.

Severson certainly isnt know for his defensive prowess, I agree he is good, but in 3 years will he be even a shell of himself at 33 years old? what about at 37?

When your team is getting bullied around wouldnt it be a good idea to get a player with toughness who can actually play the game?

I just think he is making these moves to save his own job, not for the betterment of the jackets.

I mean i disagree as prospect trajectory changes on a yearly basis. Look at sillinger, had a great rookie season and then forgot how to play hockey over the summer. The only "sure things" they have are johnson and jiricek, after that nothing is a guarantee.

They already have too many defenseman without counting jiricek, mateychuk, svozil, ceulamens, Christiansen. Wingers they have gaudreau, laine, Kent Johnson, marchenko, Voronkov, dumais, texier. They don’t have enough roster spots to develop their prospects as is

Again penciling these guys in is a mistake. If they believed in these d they probably wouldnt have made the trades they did....

It literally doesn't matter if Provorov leaves in two years. In fact, the Jackets were trying to sign Gavrikov to a short term contract anyway. They need a stopgap until Denton Mateychuk is ready and 2 years is perfect for that.

It's shocking how bad people are at math. 29, 30 , 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36. He will never be 37 years old under the contract he signed. They've also got Jiricek and Ceulemans coming up so it'll be just fine if he's playing 3rd pairing in the final 3 years of his contract. If he's completely terrible the buyout on the last 3 years is like 2.75M for 3 years then 1.75M for 3 years. Totally affordable on a $90M+ cap.

They did get a guy who can play the game. They also got a guy who is a terrific locker room presence.

All of these moves have been to create an atmosphere that their upcoming players can thrive in rather than getting beaten both physically and on the scoreboard.

Sure, he forgot to play hockey. Had nothing to do with getting a concussion in main camp, another suspected one around christmas, losing all 3 of his most common veteran linemates(Vorcek, Bjorsktrand, Nyquist) and his other most common linemates(Domi and Chinkahov) from 2021-22, or the complete obliteration of the rest of the lineup.

They made the trades because they didn’t want to rush their development. They wouldn’t have traded picks if they didn’t believe they already had guys in place for the future. They didn’t rush the rebuild at all.

Nobody would know that pitfall better than a Buffalo fan. The moves he's made so far are to shore up glaring vacancies because he learned from last season. You can't just throw a team of all kids into the league with no guidance (Larsen wasn't a hockey terrorist, but he was a terrible coach). You have to have veterans to shield them. Columbus has had five first round picks since 2021 (Johnson, Sillinger, Ceulemans, Jiricek, Mateychuk) plus 3OA this year. They've got the high end pool now so trading this year's 22OA was a cost that could be borne to get a veteran in place on the left side so the team wasn't depending on Berni, Svozil, etc. for critical minutes. You can't stay in the accumulation phase forever.

I get the worry. I would have liked the 22OA but there's a lot of calculus that went into that trade.

1. There weren't many defensemen available who fit the pre-Mateychuk/Svozil window that were actually good. Provorov is certainly a risk, but as recently as 21-22 he was a top puck-mover and he's a decent cap-hit with a situationally perfect contract length.
2. There aren't many C's available this offseason for reasonable prices.
3. Cole Sillinger looked like a good player when playing with Voracek, Bjorkstrand, Nyquist, but we no longer have veterancy on the wings.
4. Jake Bean and Adam Boqvist are not reliable players in the D zone.
5. Future cap doesn't matter. Florida, Vegas, Tampa are proving that it's not that hard to get out of deals. Cap is going up.

3 and 4 compound to make a very difficult development environment for young players. Bean and Boqvist (and to a lesser extent even Gavrikov) struggled with too many fires to put out because we didn't have centers that could play. Sillinger tanked this last season because he didn't have defensemen that could help him get the puck out of the zone and he had to carry rookies who had played fewer games than him after injuries.

Jarmo's moves were attempts to reduce the development hurdles by 1. Now that we have Provorov and Severson it will be easier to integrate less-experienced forwards (or d partners) into the lineup without them drowning in pressure in their own zone. If we got a good, reliable middle-six center to help Chinakov, Johnson, Texier, Sillinger play their games it would be even better. It remains to be seen whether one of those is available. Hopefully an improved D corps serves as a platform for them to learn to impact the game without swimming in rookie-mistake chaos.

With 3OA we have a prospect that looks 90% certain to be a 1C in either Fantilli or Carlsson. We just have to not blow it and help further insulate players like Sillinger, Johnson, Chinakov, Marchenko with their Nyquist, Bjorkstrand, Voracek equivalents.

The only player VAN could trade for 3OA would be EP, with extension.

Beyond that, its fun to dream, I guess.

Sillinger tanked this last season because he didn't have defensemen that could help him get the puck out of the zone and he had to carry rookies who had played fewer games than him after injuries.

This right here is what people don't understand and why these two trades were made. Not only injuries protection because these two Dmen are noted for their durability but their 3rd line had nobody that could drive out of the neutral zone. First line had JG, second line had Roslovic and KJ, 4th line had ERob. Who on the 3rd line can move through the neutral zone with Gudbranson on the ice? THAT'S WHY Sillinger had such a miserable year then badly tanked his confidence. With Texier there that should immediately help that situation at a minimum.

Right now that's the biggest true issue with CBJ and their centers. None of their centers outside Roslovic had a good neutral zone presence but he also is so inconsistent and makes terrible hockey IQ plays is why we had such an abysmal offense this year on top of the defense couldn't get the puck out of their zone. If we get a new center their biggest attribute will be their neutral zone driving.

You are right i know exactly what can happen as a sabres fan, trading a first for montour, a second for miller, ralph krueger as the coach etc. the thing is columbus still has a more than likely chance to miss the playoffs next year which would lead to the firing of the gm. He will be replaced with a guy with a new vision who may revert alot of the moves jarmo made and the cycle will repeat itself.
