Jets Blow It Up

Created by: CapsJets
Team: 2023-24 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2023
Published: Jun. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Jets are looking to blow it up (or at least they should). Couple big trades made involving major pieces on their roster, I wrote in the description of the trade my thoughts, let me know if you think they are fair/realistic. Also a couple of minor free agent signings/re-signings. After trading Hellebuyck, they needed a starting goalie, so I gave Alex Lyon some money from Florida. With them having Bobrovsky & Knight, they have no room for Lyon, so the Jets give him good money to come here and be a starter.

Overall theme of this is making room for younger players to play more prominent roles:
-Perfetti on line 1 center
-Turcotte on line 2 center
-Gustafsson on line 4 center
-Heinola in the top 4
-Samberg a regular in the lineup
Berdin as the backup

And also restocking on draft captial.

Let me know your thoughts!

Trades
1.
WPG
  1. Turcotte, Alex
  2. 2023 4th round pick (LAK)
  3. 2024 1st round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Kings add a gritty player who is tough to play against. They also feel ok giving up a 1st next year because Dubios comes with a deal in place. Also, giving up on Turcotte feels wrong as he is so young, but it seems like other young Kings prospects have passed him on the depth chart, and if it can get them a player like Dubios, I think it's worth it.
LAK
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc
Additional Details:
Jets have no leverage in this move, but still get a very solid return. Turcotte could flourish with a change of scenery in Winnipeg, Also, some other American prospects (Lucius, McGroarty) could be a nice future for Winnipeg.
2.
WPG
  1. Carlo, Brandon
  2. Lauko, Jakub [RFA Rights]
  3. 2025 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg retains salary to make Scheifele a 3 million dollar player. Bruins have a stacked team as shown with their regular season last year, but I think they fell short because their centerman aren't good enough anymore. I think Bergeron & Krejci are good, but are at the age where they can't be expected to play at that high of level for 82 games plus a deep playoff run. I think Scheifele comes in and takes a lot of pressure off of those guys, and Boston is a hockey market that I could see him liking, and signing long term.
BOS
  1. Scheifele, Mark ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Again, Winnipeg without much leverage here, but they get some young pieces. In my opinion, the major piece here is Carlo. Would immediately step in to a top 2 role alongside Morrissey, and would be a great fit for the Jets.
3.
WPG
  1. Savoie, Matthew
  2. 2023 1st round pick (BUF)
  3. 2025 4th round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Buffalo is looking to compete, and they trade off some valuable assets for an established goalie that will help them do just that. Hellebuyck is a top 5 goalie in most people's eyes, and would immediately make the Sabres a playoff team I think. Buffalo also has a deep prospect pool with lots of young, high end players on their roster, so losing these assets hurts, but is not detrimental for them.
BUF
  1. Hellebuyck, Connor
Additional Details:
Jets capitalize on the value of Hellebuyck and get some great value in return to kick start this rebuild. Savoie is a high end prospect who played a lot of junior in Winnipeg, and could be a cornerstone piece for them moving forward. Reminds me a bit of Barzal.
4.
WPG
  1. 2024 7th round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Panthers reunite Wheeler and Maurice with this move. As a team that needs cap space, I'm not sure they do this, but just for the sake of this Jets rebuild I'll say they will lol
FLA
  1. Wheeler, Blake ($4,000,000 retained)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Jets retain on Wheeler, and basically swap picks with Panthers to get this done. Either a buy-out, or doing something like this is I think the only option for the Jets with this contract.
5.
WPG
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Ducks have plenty of mid round picks in the next few drafts, and Elliot Friedman on his podcast mentioned that he thinks the Ducks are looking to add some toughness to their lineup as he feels they get pushed around too much. Dillon helps with that, doesn't cost much, and is a UFA at seasons end, so not much long term risk involved with this.
ANA
  1. Dillon, Brenden ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Jets retain a bit of salary here because as they enter this rebuild, they will have lots of cap space, even after retaining on Wheeler. Jets also have a lot of LHD ready to make more of an impact on the team, and I think Dillon is someone who could realistically have a market for him. I think either him or Schmitt needs to be moved, but there would be no market for Schmitt with his contract, so they opt to get some value back for Dillion.
6.
WPG
  1. 2023 6th round pick (TBL)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Lightning are in need of a shut down guy, and they see some potential in former 1st round pick, Logan Stanley. Comes with a cheap extension, as well as not giving up much value, the Lightning seem like a team that could help Stanley's development, and he could help them on their bottom pair.
TBL
  1. Stanley, Logan
Additional Details:
Has requested a trade out of Winnipeg, and again, with lots of LHD, Jets look to honour that request. Not much value, but they stock up on some late round picks to help them potentially navigate the the board and take some chances on prospects.

That Boston trade is ludicrous. Maybe for Grzy but they wouldn't trade Carlo for anything other than a massive payment.

C’mon. Boston doesn’t even consider that. They don’t trade Carlo 1 for 1 for him and in a couple of days ‘Peg will be on his NTC list.

You might get the 1st and mid level prospect if they were interested, have not heard anything resembling that they are.

IMO the Jets best hope for good returns is closer to TDL. These UFA caps would be as high to their new teams. Teams will know what they need for a Cup run

Got a feeling jets want some closure on wheeler/scheifele/helly/Dubois, obviously not truly gifted away, and may settle for some roster players and some picks, nothing too crazy in players, but possibly a surprising pick in first, would love to get into top 15 and hopefully pull a future 1c.

You don't think Boston considers trading a top 4 dman for a point per game center man on that kind of contract after the playoffs they just had? You're kidding lol

Yep, I certainly understand the closure part, but really don't see trade partners now. Teams that would be interested in these players would need to be contenders, and contenders don't have cap right now.

Winnipeg should be taking back a bag contract and punishing Sweeney with more future assets in the trade.

Can't wait for Dubios to Montreal for a 4th round pick. Essentially trading Laine and Roslovic for that hahah

I'd take a bad contract on, Jets won't have anyone good that needs an expensive contract after making those moves so I'd be down! Who do the Bruins consider having a big contract though?

Forbort and Reilly. They probably need to unload Frederic as they can't afford to extend him. Maybe Hall but he has a NTC.

Nope.

They refused to move him for Horvat who i’d rather have. And Landy after his rookie year. Not moving him for locker room cancer, defensive liabilty. Especially when the top RD behind his Mitch Miller, ya, that Mitch Miller and the free agent market sucks. No we don’t want Demelo either.

Jets fans are delusional that they can get Carlo. Only piece that would get him on the table is Perfetti. And by weeks end you have zero chance.

I had to watch Forbort for a whole season when he was on the Jets, I can't handle another year... hahah, I'll take Reilly, at least it's someone new

Your probably right, just a hopeful fan, it is about time buffalo sells there first, possibly Washington, would doubt most other teams though ahead of 18, possibly detroit or Arizona having 2 may get crafty, but probably not, just want it interesting and add to the kids.

I think you're way over valuing Carlo, but that's ok, I know I have a bias towards my teams too. Just interesting to see what other fans think. What's a reasonable return for Scheifele in your eyes? I just think the Bruins could use top center that isn't pushing 40

It’s not about Carlo, it’s about needs and value. And how the front office thinks
