Very funny you posted this since the DK effect has since been discredited.

Just a little ironic

Your statement that the Dunning Kruger Effect has been discredited is patently false. The reasons for its accuracy have been debated, but its overall applicability have never even been questioned.

Didn't Wayne Gretzky play for LA?

For 7 years, and not the best years of his career. Before Kopitar, Gretzky wasn't considered the best player in Kings history. It was Dionne.

The math literally didn't check out for the claim.

Am I the only one thinking this deal makes the one Malkin signed that much better for PIT?

The first two years of Malkin's extension would have carried a $7M AAV as well. He took a longer term with the later years falling off in salary.

Unlike Kopitar's extension, Malkin's contract DOES have all the 35+ drawbacks because it his front loaded. So while the Kings can still buyout Kopitar's contract if necessary or get full cap relief if he retires, Malkin's contract stays on the books no matter what.

So no, I would have taken this exact deal over Malkin's exact deal.

I love it. He's the kind of player whose game ages well, and his injury history is minimal, so by the end of this deal he should still be at least a solid 2C. $7M is pretty reasonable for a player like that.

He’s already signed through his age 36 season, not sure I understand the appeal of preemptively giving him an age 37 and 38 contract.

Not sure what this means.

Ohh say heaven forbid he has a career ending injury or as Phil Esposito has said many times the legs just go and there's really not much you can do about it. Kopitar is at the age the legs just going is a very real possibility.

Sure, but in that case he goes on LTIR and the Kings replace him with someone else.

$10M for his age 36 season
$7M for his age 37 season
$7M for his age 38 season

As an Oilers fan, I love it. It's not as bad as the Dubois contract, but I'm happy to see Pacific division rivals signing inefficient contracts.

Owners aren't happy writing &7,000,000 checks to get nothing even at 80% insured it's costing the owner $1,400,000 .ok the legs go and he utterly unproductive, but not really injured as again Esposito said happened to him at the end

from my point of view they respected him enough with the 80 million contract they game him, but i understand where you are coming from.

I honestly totally agree. It's not something I would do or think was necessary. But there is a part of me that just can't get fussed about it. Ya know?

You can slow down without being fully injured.

Ex is when the Avs signed Iginla for 3 years. Year 1 he was awesome and put up 29 goals in the top 6. Year 2 he suddenly lost a step and was a 3rd liner and PP specialist. Year 3 he wasn’t able to play at an NHL pace even on the worst team in the league.

I’m not arguing Kopitar is going to have the same aging curve as Iginla. But a player slowing down can happen suddenly once you’re in your late 30s.

Sure. Then they can buy him out after the first year.

I would think that's more of being a face of the franchise thing/length of time there than Dionne being better than Gretzky no?

Gretzky had the most points in the league over those 7 seasons by over 80 points
He won a Hart and was top 5 a few times. He was first or second all star like 5 of the seasons.

Dionne never had those accomplishments. But he was a face of kings hockey

You may be right, but for a team that has Darnell Nurse and Jack Campbell locked for what they bring, I'm not sure if Oilers fans would be the right people to make that statement.

That’s the point though: why take the risk? I think Kopitar rules and likely will be fine but it’s a contract where I don’t see the upside as much for the Kings as I do Kopitar

Because that's a very unlikely thing to happen, and if it does, the Kings have an out. That's why the mitigated that risk by structuring it the way they did.

LOL, I can't be critical of a dumb signing because other dumb signings exist? That's stupid! tears of joy

Nurse is a 1st pairing defenseman who ISN'T signed through 38 years old.

For all intents and purposes, this is not a 35+ contract due to the way it was structured.
