Meh, I’d rather have Sillinger than Scheifele at the moment. Also don’t think I’d want to spend whatever it is going to cost to keep Helleybuck until his age 38 season.

It screams Bobrovsky 2.0.

I think it’s disrespectful for Hellebuyck
He is a way better goaltender than Bob IMO

I mean, peak Bob was worth two Vezina’s; but, the point isn’t whether Helleybuck is better than Bob *right now*, because he is, even if Bob had a nice run in the playoffs (there is a reason why “goalie” has become a verb). The point is whether Helleybuck is going to be worth the $8M-$9M someone is going to pay him until he’s in his late thirties.

Goalies in the NHL are the new RB’s in the NFL. There are going to be a few diamonds, sure, but you’re better off building around a 1a/1b on mid-level contracts than you are investing big money into one guy to carry your team for 65+ games.

Even then, goalies are voodoo. Absolute nobodies show up and tear the league apart, then turn to pumpkins. Proven stars go from savior to buy-out speculation. Goalie just isn’t a position I’d want to invest high-end money into; I.e. the money Helleybuck is going to demand, and that someone is likely going to pay him.

Let’s say he signs 6X9M
You were already paying Elvis 5.4M
So for 3.6M, you get an Elite goaltender
Hellebuyck is still in his good years, Gaudreau & Hellebuyck both wants a cup. I don’t think it would be a bad move, IMO
It puts them into contender

This is a lot to spend on two rentals and their next contracts would be a tough pill to swallow.

As far as pick protection goes, no pick protection on the 24 first and top 10 on the 25 pick. Not both.

That isn't a great comparison RBs fall off towards the mid-end of their careers where goalies can remain elite longer than any position

Never said you weren’t.

But your user name doesn’t describe your trade proposal.

laugh Dude Scheifele and Hellebuyck aren't going to the worst team in hockey, Both grew up Red Wing fans. And both would head to Detroit long before Columbus.

Not the point. Issue isn't necessarily length of their career, it is volatility of the position and how high of a percentage of the cap should be allocated to that risk level. There is a reason there is never going to be another Adrian Peterson contract.

You are better off with two $4M goalies than one $8M goalie.

I mean, yes, CBJ would be better with Helleybuck in net; but, my issue is goalie volatility and the aging curve. For that, I'm not giving up Sillinger, two firsts, and Boqvist - who is probably worth a 2nd himself.
