I don't think thats an overpay. Obviously for like a Chicago who shouldn't be spending picks right now it is but for any team that isn't at the bottom of the standings that deal would be very reasonable.

For the Hawks sake, I hope they don't make the same mistake they did with Jones. Giving up young assets when they could have just signed the Jones (and if this case Hanifan) for free.

Petry says No.

And i don't see Hanifin committing long term with a bottom feeder either.

This is awful for the Hawks. Their single deepest prospect position is LD.

mmmm I think Chicago is not on Petry's NTC actually, but this would only be good for the pens if they sent Zaitsev somewhere

Petry has a 15 team no trade clause. Who knows who is on it. Maybe he likes the city. Maybe he wants to play with Bedard.

Didn’t they dump Brian Campbell after 3 years to make room for Seabrook new deal?

Long enough to win a cup than move him when they needed the space. Yup

If he’s a Michigan guy he likes Chicago. I doubt they are on his no-trade list.

… this is the kind of talk that leads to waiting forever and double-rebuilds.

Be like Los Angeles and not like Edmonton and Buffalo. One rebuild is enough

Really??? You a fan of that Seth Jones trade??? I like Seth Jones alot, but it was a horrible trade. Coulda had him and Jiricek. Just like IF the Hawks want Hanifin...they'll sign him without giving up any assets.

DOING this trade ends the rebuild, but still might not make the playoffs...let alone cup contenders.

Hawks aren't trading those picks for Hanifin. Not without knowing if Korchinski or DelMastro are legit top pair guys. That's a trade a rebuilding team makes when they are closer to emerging from their rebuild and they have a specific need to fill. If Hawks have interest in Hanifin, they'll just overpay him in free agency next summer - same as they did with Campbell. They didn't give up any assets to get him other than $$.

Hawks probably do consider the Pens trade though.

I am definitely part of the consensus, I like the idea of Hanifin as a FA signing in the summer of 2024 but I would not trade draft capital or prospects for him.

No need for Vladar.

With respect to Petry, I have been adamant he needs to have an 1st round pick attached to him for the Hawks to accept the deal. While moving Zaitsev as part of the trade makes it a little more palatable, you are still absorbing an additional $2m cap hit this year and his full $6.5m next season as a 36 year old defender. Due to his no trade clause you may not be able to move him later on for additional draft capital, so the Hawks need to get their cake up front as part of the deal.

The current Devils rebuild has often been said to have a number of similarities to the Chicago late 2000’s rebuild. Where Hischier, Hughes are our Toews, Kane. Nemec and Hughes are our Seabrook, Keith. Similar early question marks in goal…hopefully Schmid becomes our Crawford. Meier is our Hossa… maybe Bratt is our Sharp. And Dougie is our Campbell…signed, probably above market price, to accelerate a rebuild.

1) not a fan of the cost of Seth Jones trade. Not a fan of trying to extend the Chicago window at that time either. I am a fan of pushing rebuilding teams out of their rebuild cycles by adding complementary vets. I don’t see how your comparison makes sense?

2) trading a later first is not ending a rebuild. Getting the right vets in is important during rebuilds. I could see Hanifin being a great fit long term. Moving down the depth chart as Korchinski rises.

I get waiting a year to sign him without the picks being involved. The later first really isn’t that valuable. You can’t get all your prospects into the league. The early first this year is still massive for the rebuild. That’s obviously not going to be traded! Because the rebuild isn’t over smile

Hawks fans are very excited about Oliver Moore. That's was TBLs pick last year. I don't have a crystal ball, but I can't see them trading away any 1st because you're right! The rebuild isn't over. The Hawks deepest prospect position is LD. They'll develop from within.

Last year is a rare draft for those mid-round firsts. Unusually valuable. I get the LD depth comments but not really. As far as I can tell, no one looks like a locked in for sure top 4 LHS Dman except Korchinski. Vlasic could easily bust.

Anyways, I also don’t see Chicago doing this deal. It’s just an idea I liked. I see Chicago being very bad for one more year and then just normal bad as they start their ascent in two years.

I’m really excited for Moore! If Bedard and Moore develop as the 1/2 C towards their ceilings, that’s championship contender stuff right there. The D still looks thin to me in three years though.

You're 100% correct that even in my own bias Hawks fan mind...we're still years away from a true NHL caliber LD. Korchinski included in my mind. He needs to go back to the WHL and work on his 2-way game. Go play for Team Canada again...continue to work. Hawks fans are high on Vlasic...to which yes...he could bust. Just like a lot of these guys. We're also very high on Del Mastro to be an NHL caliber player. Phillips is sneaking in the conversation for a longer term NHL role as well. This year Del Mastro should spend a full year in Rockford and Phillips/Vlasic both a full year in the NHL. I just want to give these guys real ice time to figure out what we have. What we did with Ian Mitchell/Alec Regula was awful. Mostly Ian Mitchell though. We sat him on the bench as a healthy scratch WAY too much.

I'm hopeful that 2nd 1st round pick will be used on a RD for years even further down the road. The rebuild might not have just started, but it's far from over.

I remember Ian Mitchell being relevant to prospect nuts two years ago. Terrible to hear about his development being stifled but if he couldn’t crack those Hawks teams he probably didn’t have what it takes.

I remember when TJ Brodie was a turnover machine that literally cost the Flames wins. Developing defencemen is no small task. Hopefully you can get a RHS dman of Brayden Schneider’s calibre around that second first round pick. Five years from now that player will be extremely handy to have under RFA as things improve.
