Why would the Devils need to dump Meier right after signing him?

To sign Helle or another great goaltender

No offense but clearly you know nothing about the Devils' cap situation. There are lots of things they can do that aren't trading newly-signed Meier for pennies.

As a Rangers fan I can admit that you have a great team. But if your goalie isn't solid you will have serious trouble in the playoffs. Look at the Oilers, Leafs, even Canes. Maybe trading Meier isn't the solution but you will not be able to get a great goaltender on the cheap

Cernak and Stamkos is worth more than that garbage.

Too bad all Canadian teams are on John Gibsons no trade list, And it's already been reported that he said no to the Leafs awhile back.

Ryan Leonard for Stamkos, That trade is a bigger joke. This dude is just Trolling and making laughable trades that aren't remotely realistic.

That doesn't mean your trades don't have to make sense for both sides

The Devils could trade Palat - with picks if needed - to free up the space to sign a goalie. But they don’t need one at the moment.

Meier’s a 30-40G 70pt+ player with a physical game. We can revisit him being a cap dump in 5? years. With Meier out and Helle in, critics would call the Devils “soft.” No matter the scenario, there will always be something.

I'm actually not trolling in the slightest. You have over $47 million tied up between 8 guys until 2027 at the absolute earliest. Now the cap will definitely go up --- but who's the odd one out, of Meier, Hughes, Bratt, Hischier, Palat, Hamilton, Marino, and Siegenthaler to afford a goalie who is going to command at least 9mil if they are anything worth their salt? Or which third/fourth line guys are you kicking out? Not to mention, Luke Hughes. The kid is probably going to be a stud just like Quinn, who's getting paid almost 8 mil a year. All of this to say, if I'm the Devils I'm getting rid of Meier and bringing in a great goaltender. You were doing fine last year before you brought him in. He's not a key piece like J Hughes that the Devils absolutely can't live without.

I have to disagree here. You guys were doing fine before you brought in Meier last year. He's not a key piece in the way that Jack Hughes is. Plus, Palat is a notoriously great playoff performer

Man that Capitals trade is horrific. The Caps puke, decline, and then puke again. Hägg is barely an NHLer at this point. I honestly wouldn’t trade Fehervary alone for that entire package. Stamkos is signed for one (1) year and then an UFA. Leonard would not be anywhere near the discussion of this trade. Just an abysmal nightmare.

Why? They don't have many years left with the current core. A HEAVILY discounted Stamkos could easily help with a serious push towards another Cup before Ovi retires

I mean the Caps are either rebuilding or they aren't. If they do in a few years, Fehervary is probably going to be sold off and Leonard might be too. It would be one thing if the rebuild already started and you said no to giving up Leonard. But might as well still compete while you can

The comparison isn’t Meier vs. Jack, it’s Meier (at $8.8) is better than Palat (at $6M). I’m confident most would agree with that.

The Devils were fine with Meier - 12-7 to end the year - and he scored on a 35 goal pace. Small sample arguments can be made both ways.

No, Leonard could be a top 6 forward for the caps for over a decade. He’s an elite Tkachuk/Wilson-like talent. That is NOT worth a singular season of stamkos, let alone the caps adding a young top 4 defenseman on top of that. It’s not even close. The caps aren’t winning a cup this year. No reason to sell the farm to go for it when they’re not even close.

I'm seriously baffled at how you came to the conclusion Meier would be the one to move, and that it would be this season
