Money talks. Scheifele and Helly will now be the biggest Jets fans.

Impressed. Good AAV, term hurts but the AAV matters more in my opinion.

Thought it was going to be matching 5x8, and a little long. Will be interesting to see how well this plays out. Both have some smart agents, both were getting the most money and term from Winnipeg.

The jets were backed into a corner here. They couldn't afford to move both, because it would inevitably mean moving the rest of this team which is great on paper. And scheifele and hellys agents took advantage.

Fanbase kind of willed this also, I kind of question if it’s not better this way, package back for them was probably a late first, and a couple lower end prospects. So 2 late firsts, and couple prospects that are mid at best. With a rising cap, those contracts shouldn’t be that big of anchors or lose anyone that wants to be there because of cash. No free agents coming above 4 million neighborhood, so these contracts don’t effect those also, so I’ll take it as a win for now lol

The reality is you had to buy both out of free agency. It was never going to be 5 years for either player. I think you got an AAV discount because of the excess years of about a million dollars a year.

I was expecting 6 years, $9.5m for both with the possibility of extending it to up to 8 for less money

I’m glad we don’t have to see endless trades where they were undervalued from a comp perspective based on what a team would have to pay to get them to forego free agency

Very cautiously optimistic, i question if they are going to actually need the extra 5.0 million spent to extend them, not to brag about over paying or over terming, or claiming it’s a good business practice. But other than extensions and raises possibly to Connor, ehlers, possibly vilardi, whose requiring big bucks, if cap goes up 5 million in 3 years, the extensions really null and void on salary cap other than if they turn rather unmovable. Only mid to bargain ufas are coming 4/5 million or less, so not really a factor there, moose can’t seem to add a top 6 or 4 player to save there lives so not really a factor there either. So perfetti if he proves to be able to stay healthy and performs up to hype gets Schmidt’s money and Dillon money spread to a few other guys and away we go, stay mid to bubble, so not drafting in top 5 to add enough talent to mess with our cap, wouldn’t want to gamble a bunch of money on that sort of talent. Officially the Minnesota wild of old, and prepare to bubble for a good while. How’s that for a rant to start the season lol

The 37 & 55 contracts are the Jets versions of the Parise and Suter deals, how did those work out... 🤔... 🤣

Honestly these suck, Chipman is ruining this team.

12/15 years away from being a contender if they get the next gm right? What’s best case scenario for next 3/5 years, couple kids show out large, rhd dman or two show rather quick. Past 3/4 firsts turn into their absolute ceiling and still 3rd place in central?

That seems about right... 🤣

So I guess I should look at what they'll have for cap space next season, I figure there's a DeMelo extension coming soon at around $4.5M×4, thought they'd want to keep Dillon around but now I'm not so sure, someone's gonna need to go to free up some space, Ville will need a contract next summer too!

Niedreiter/perfetti/Dillon/demelo/heinola free agency with a rising cap. I wonder if there’s a trade before more extensions, trade some ufas back into some team control. Will be interesting til Schmidt comes off the books. Hopefully helps in keeping ehlers and Connor around. Ehlers can’t be looking for much of a raise, but more term than I maybe willing to give him and Connor probably wants to crack the 8.5 ceiling or possibly closer to home, damn we need those kids to come quick.

I have no reason to doubt The Athletic's reporting on Hellebuyck not wanting to re-sign or Hellebuyck's own words that all that matters to him is winning but here is a scenario where Hellebuyck might consider something like that. If the Jets offer $8 million x 7yrs and Petkau's information gathering says that Hellebuyck could only get 4yr deal in the open market (ends at 35yrs old), then he has to make the call if chasing a cup is worth giving up $24 million in this type of scenario.

(above from August 8th)... I was so close in nailing the aav, but got the term right in that then-hypothetical scenario. wink In my case, even a blind squirrel finds a nut from time to time.

Lots of negative talk up there, but this is good for the jets and their fans. Shows the jets are trying to win and are willing to spend. I'm not gonna get upset about what these contracts are gonna look like in 5 years. I just care that hockey is about to start and I dont have to see TSN's trade bait panel talk about the jets pending UFA's (not these ones anyways)
