Initial Creation Date: Dec. 5, 2023

Description
It's me..... I'm the idiot.

Goaltending depth is a strength for this team and it would have been a mistake to throw away for nothing. Hope Markstrom can heal up and Wolf plays out of his mind when he gets the opportunity.

Far too much for a rental from Winnipeg. Lambert won't be involved for a deal for a rental.

Extended, what are your thoughts? Would it even be possible to extend him in Winnipeg?

Maybe, I think the Flames target a couple young borderline roster players in a trade somewhere, just happened to be the Hanifin one in this scenario. He has trade protection which will obviously need to be considered and if he comes with an extension I could see the price jumping significantly.

Why would the Jets pay that much for a rental? Jets wont and cant extend him so no point in giving up a first and 2 top prospects.

What would you pay for Lindholm at 2.45 cap hit as a rental?

A 2nd and Lucius but calgary would probably get a better offer from a team that wants to re sign him... but the jets arent that team as we don't have the space to with the scheif and helle extensions.

Fair enough. Just for my own curiosity where how do you tier the Jets prospects in terms of Perfetti, Lucius, Lambert, McGroarty, Barlow? Is it Perfetti then a cliff and the rest of them? I'll quote the other Jets fan as well here just to get your opinion too.

It would have to be a reasonable dollar and term extension. Like 4 or 5 years no more than $8.5. Plus the price would have to be more reasonable. 2 of Winnipeg's top prospects and a 1st won't happen imo.

IMO NHL teams need three NHL capable goalies, especially if they are looking at a playoff run.
I agree with the author.....don't trade Vladar. Now maybe if the Flames are out of playoff contention in February, might be the only time.

Perfetti seems to be coming into his own and is a regular roster player, so he's far above the others. I think the Jets also view the others as high and prospects as well with maybe Lucius being a little lower with his problems staying healthy.

Outside of Lucius maybe, I can't see the Jets moving any of those guys. They're a draft and develop team, so until they are dead positive the player won't make it to the show, they'll hang onto him.

Not a bad problem to have. That's a whole lot of high ceiling in the pipeline.

That's an overpay for Tanev, even with retention. I'd expect just the 1st+3rd a cap dump back (Dadonov?) for Tanev @50%, or just the 1st for Tanev 50%. but you're definitely not getting Hakanpaa, he's their #4/5 and is on one of the Stars most cost effective contracts.

Definitely got lucky still having Vladar around, it's the worst way to see it but Vladar and Wolf deserve a run.

Can we just keep the defense core? The more I think about Hanifin @ 7.5 is fine, especially the way he's playing. Tanevs a warrior and will stablize whatever youth or Kylington fills in on LD.

The forward group is rotten, it took Zary and Pospisil to remind everyone what individual effort looks like.

We're married to Huby and Kadri and we've seen they can be effective given the right supporting cast.

We've seen that Mangiapane and Dube definitely aren't those guys. Ruzicka might not fit either but getting rid of the other two gives him a chance to go on a run.

It feels like a merry go round of supporting cast swirling around the core pieces.

Lindholms gotta go too, if he doesn't fit with Huby and he can't find a way to drive a line, get some assets and open a roster slot.

I'm just frustrated, it's been 100 games of extreme mediocrity and we haven't done anything but react since Tkachuk left.

If we keep icing the same roster I expect the same results.

Pretty obvious that it would be a direct replacement and makes the money work. Hakanpaa is 32 at the end of his deal, if Tanev is on that D core Hakanpaa isn't displacing any of Harley, Lundkvist, Lindell, Suter and they have a cost effective pipeline to fill in as a 7th d man the rest of the way.

If Kylington is committed to the Flames as some of the people close to the team have indicated then I would be inclined to re sign Tanev short term to give Kylington a partner for a couple more years but I think that they need to move one or the other to make room for Poirier, Kuznetsov.

This scenario is more of a retool than looking at the playoffs or competing, if they're committed to competing then I am on board with re signing Hanifin if they're looking to reset the core then I am all in on moving Hanifin for pieces to facilitate that.

I'm not ready for tank talk and losing Hanifin sounds like tank talk. Maybe at the deadline but I'd like to try and reset the core before we get there.

I'd like to see some new bodies on the front end before we sell the backend. Clear cap space so keeping Tanev doesn't look crazy and we can afford raises on our young guys if they hit.

We could never trade Vladar without having another goalie in the system behind Wolf. Marky getting hurt is always something to think about

Hanifin is worth more than Tanev. I'd swap the picks on those deals.

There's a fairly reasonable chance that the Islanders miss the playoffs all together, they're not going to move off the 2024 1st round pick I don't think. Dallas should finish near the top of the league and will have a very low pick I think. Flames target prospects and players form the Islanders and picks from the Stars in this scenario. Top 60 pick and two players that would be on the roster next season vs Top 30 pick and nothing remaining on the roster next season plus a lottery ticket in a third round pick.

Dallas accepts. Hate losing 1sts, but replacing Hakanpaa is absolutely a necessity at this point. Right now, the only "playoff caliber" defense pairing would be Harley-Heiskanen and Dallas doesn't roll those two out there together. Suter has no business being on the top pair, Hakanpaa is atrocious at anything that isn't the PK (and even then he's overrated), and Lundkvist doesn't look like much more than a 3rd pair defenseman.

Being able to roll out a Heiskanen-Tanev pair would go a long way in creating a blue line that could push you to a Cup final.

That's fair, but still isn't a reason to accept less on Hanifin. There will be plenty of teams willing to give a 1st plus on Hanifin. If Dallas accepts that deal, then by all means.
