Hawks would never retain for the length of that contract. That alone is a deal breaker.

Wasn't Laughton worth a ton just a couple months ago?

Yeah. Was just gonna say this. CHI should be open to moving Jones, but retention just isn't going to happen.

The value on the Avs trade is fine but the only real concerns are (even though Mittelstadt is RFA) whether they could afford to re-sign him and whether he'd be the right fit for the Avs style.

For 6 years though. And what if he goes downhill like OEL, and BUF buys him out or something? CHI would then be stuck with a smaller cost, but the buyout penalty would extend the use of our retention slot by double the remaining term. Like how AZ is stuck with OEL's retention slot for a billion years after VAN bought him out. Plus, the dollars added up is A LOT of money to retain. Idk. Maybe Hawks brass would be open to it. But that is a lot of salary. Then again, that is a pretty darn good offer that would essentially recoup most of the assets we spent on Jones in the first place.

What's going on anyway? Is BUF feeling less comfortable with Dahlin on the right side now? I thought I remembered people saying he was "better" on his off side.

I feel like Avs decline for now because we need someone who we know won't be just a rental and we can pay him next year if needed. Nice trade tho

Yeah and technically he still would be. He is absolutely adored in Philly.

Having said that, Philly says yes to this. There's a greater need for Philly to gather futures now than there was a few months ago

Actually Briere should and could get more. What has Krebs done in the NHL?

Yeah. With their tank out the window and hopes of a high draft pick likely along with it, they need to accumulate futures, for sure. Not to mention Cutter being gone now.

That's not the point. That uses up one of their 3 spots for 6 years.

It doesn't matter. That could be the difference between signing a player if another team offers $750k more.

But didn't TOR do that with Hot Dog and then for the next 6 years you look at you cap and it's just magically less by $750k-$1M.

So essentially this is: trade the player who’s been our best forward this year and 2 firsts (Ostlund+Buf 1st) for Seth Jones?
Even though you bring it Laughton, I don’t really see this as a much better team, and trading away our first this year seems pretty silly if this is all you’re doing.

But you only get 3 retention slots per year. So that ties up a valuable slot for a LONG time. Without retention it is fine.

It's not the amount. It's tying up a retention slot for the next six seasons. Remove the retention and Hawks definitely consider it. Insist on the retention and I'm not so sure.

I don't like Midds as a fit for the Avs(as you know), but this isnt a bad C.T.A. Not a bad idear. I think the Sabres can get something that helps them more though

Seems like I’m the only hawks fan that would take this deal. Why are you guys so worried about 1 retention slot? You can still make trades without retention. They’ll reach the point where they intend to sign guys long term and to compete for the playoffs rather than signing guys to trade. They’ll be like most other teams in a few years and not even use all their slots. And even if they do, this return is better than retaining on players like Domi for a 2nd round pick. Ostlund and Buffalo’s first is pretty sweet if you ask me. Would be nice if Colorado’s first was a different year. That is my only complaint and it’s not even a bad one.

Seth Jones defense numbers are improving, this year they are respectable and when weighted against his teammates they're fantastic. He's the exact type of defender the Sabres need in their top for and had the offensive pedigree that would probably return next to Dahlin. The Sabres with live without Mittelstadt, they still have Savoie, who is now not being blocked

They have 3 LHD in their top 4 and not much physical presence. Dahlin is fine on the right, If Samuelsson is with Dahlin, Dahlin is on the right and Power would be back to the left
