Reinforcing The Leafs Identity

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2024
Published: Jan. 18, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What is the Leafs identity? A lot of people say they lack one. I think since the beginning of the Matthews era their identity has been scoring goals. They are an offensive team. They should lean into that identity.

Yesterday Keefe said he was more worried about not scoring enough than giving up leads. For all his faults and flaws, Keefe was right with that assertion.

The players Treliving signed in the offseason were brought in to augment the offense and spread the attack, Domi and Bertuzzi in particular. That was a good strategy but the players have underperformed. Getting an offensive defenceman in Klingberg was also the right idea, it's unfortunate what happened to him, but Treliving should look to trade for another one. He should also trade Bertuzzi and Domi, who have combined for exactly 10 goals this season, and try again at bringing in offensive minded players.

Pretty easy pass for Anaheim

Rico gets us a 24 2nd and a good prospect if not more

OTT declines.

Will get more than two thirds (one multiple drafts away) for Senko with retention

Tyler Johnson should be available but Chicago will be looking for futures. Domi is an expiring contract so this trade doesn't help whatsoever.

Maybe Chicago will want to resign him considering Domi played good in Chicago. He could sign a similar deal as Foligno. Also, I don't think how coveted Johnson is around the league.

We'll see. I think the Leafs should definitely target him.

I do think there may be some interest in Bertuzzi in Boston and the asking price seems reasonable. The open issue is the cap space.

Toronto would need to retain about $1.25m to $1.5m. Boston could add Boqvist and a prospect like Harrison to the mix.

The real question is whether Sweeney still covets him or was turned off by the way he handled free agency

Anaheim has no interest in either of those two players. Henrique with 50% retention should bring us at least a second-round draft pick plus. Quantity doesn't equal quality. Robertson may actually pan out, and I wish the Maple Leafs luck, but we have similar prospects who don't cost us anything to acquire.

Sounds like the point may have been missed. There might be mutual interest between the Hawks & Domi, who knows. But Domi or any other player on an expiring contract does nothing for the Hawks this season, it’s already lost. If the Hawks want to sign him to a Folgnio deal they will , during free agency.
I agree there probably isn’t much interest in Johnson around the league. However, you are asking for him & more importantly asking for retention. The retention slot is worth more to the Hawks than Johnson is & you are asking them to give it away for nothing that will help the Hawks. Hawks will not do other teams favors for free , just because the other teams want them too.

Bruins accept.

You going with a 20 man roster? They can’t accept without retention and they don’t have enough fat on the roster to get that money without it being painful

Just rotate a couple guys on LTIR till playoffs. If you’re not trying to circumvent the cap you really arent trying

I’d rather manage it and play the guys that are healthy. Reintroducing players in the playoffs has its negatives

Vegas and Tampa won cups with this formula. Toronto wouldn’t do this any way.

Reintroducing a great player is one thing. Vegas also had players out completely. I’d rather pay a 4th or a prospect to have them take a portion of the salary

Whatever. Bertuzzi contract is mostly signing bonus. Finding a 3rd party isn’t difficult. Worring about a minor cap move wasn’t really the point of saying yes to this deal.

We just saw what Chicago did to us with the Taylor Hall deal when we had no leverage, we need to stop pretending that available cap this year is gonna to be free, which is why you work with the team to get it done

We’d basically need to hide a 2m or above player on LTIR

Domi and Bertuzzi arent even putting up that bad of numbers. Look at their 5v5 production vs the rest of the team and its pretty close to where I would expect. Keefe isnt using them correctly is why "they arent working out" Bertuzzi was a force on the bruins PP last year.

I agree. Keefe is misusing them and not trusting them to contribute. He has to go.

He was also in the bottom 1 percentile in defensive efficiency metrics. His offense overcomes a lot, but he’s a bit flawed between his defense and injuries
