We have Dubas to thanks for this.

Apparently he set tonight as a deadline for Guentzel.

Deadlines for top rentals make everybody make choices.

True but whats better winning a cup or 8m?

Lots of players can make money few can get a cup

Can always get that money later after winning cup as he can just go sign a few 3m deals. Bogo did something similar and it paid off for him.

Just pointing out that $8M makes it a more difficult decision than $4M.

And its 8M against a shot at winning the cup.... 20% in the best of teams...

True but sometimes risk is worth as going to one of the teams I mentioned 1m x 1 year having a good playoffs and or winning the cup can bring the money back anyways

Like him going to FLA or VGK would scare me

Its a wait and see but there be a few teams with a solid shot rn.

Now there is always the option PHI ret 2m and trade him after he clears that also works

Also probably helps that there's only 3 games today vs 12 tomorrow. Not that a gameday would prevent a move from happening but I'd bet teams prefer to get business done on off days

Edit: Though as I say that 4 of the 6 teams playing tonight have made moves

I actually think that Bo - Casey deal is not good for Buffalo. It’s fair in a vacuum imo, with all things considered - but Buffalo does not have plenty of LD space to give Byram a role to grow into. If Buffalo continues to play him on his offside or as a 3rd/ 4th LD… they may just not be able to bring him into his full potential.. which is what they’re clearly trading for.

Idk TBL did well with 3 strong LD remember Sergechev used to be behind Hedman and McDonagh

Byram can be eased back on the third pair and u can even out the ice more

Dahlin-Samuelsson
Power-Jokiharju
Byram-Clifton
EJ

Bryams been in the same situation in COL so this literally changes nothing is the point.

He clearly hasn’t flourished being a “afterthought” defender as that’s not what his potential is, if he hit his full stride and didn’t get concussed again - he would be your number1-2OFD / PP quarterback.

Not saying it won’t work out in Buffalo but I don’t like the optics.

If he went to SJS or ARI I would understand the appeal more as your goal would be to get him running the PP and OFZone plays. But in BUF Dahlin is your obvious number 1, rightfully so, and Power isn’t an asset you want to put on the back burner on so he’s obviously your number 2. And Samuelsson is a great defender so he’s either offside which isn’t great, or keep locking down assignments / DZone on your 3rd pair…

Which will force Byram to play offside again.

I don't think they were targeting Byram or a D, but I think they were ready to move on from Mittelstad and that was the best offer. Byram has untapped potential, and I think they "won" regardless of the depth chart. But health and consistency are still big question marks. They can always balance the roster with another trade later if they need to.

You can’t trade Power or Dahlin

Which leaves Samuelsson - who isn’t really a player you’re excited to trade.

You can get a fine deal on a great car that needs a little care (let’s say a Mercedes (Byram)),

but if you’ve got 3 mint condition cars (a Lambo, a Porsche, and Ferrari)… it can still be a “good deal” on paper that results in a unused and forgotten car, making it a unnecessary deal and potentially a unwise investment.

I think there is a place longterm for Byram in the top 4, there was no place for Mitts in the top 6. Tuch, Thompson, Skinner, Benson, Quinn, Peterka, and Cozens will fight for that as well as Kulich, Savoie, Ostlund, and Rosen coming up.

What do you guys think is the more fun day? The trade deadline or the opening day of free agency?

Id personally lean to the opening day of free agency just because there is so much player movement, but trade season is also very fun

Yep you either get into a bidding war and overpay for the free agent

Free agent has no desire to even want to join your team

Or you have to do a mad scramble and could have a lot of hits or misses

While you get the guy without spending assets its still not ideal at times

At least at the TDL u get an earlier sense of k can this guy work and then u can always extend them to make what you spent more worth it then just 2 months and bye

I lean to right now only because I’m super impulsive/inpatient and over the next days I get to see the results of all this live.
