Can't sign 8 year deals unless you hold the players rights before the opening of free agency, they would need to cap out at 7

Leafs don't have the cap or desire for one year of Ullmark at that price.
Mango at 5.8m is no bargain. He's probably not better than Geekie
Lindholm isn't Bergeron. Seven years is way too much term.

If you are going to target a player in free agency or pending free agency, you are likely paying a premium with regards to years or dollars. That’s just a given. I’m not as stressed about Lindholm’s contract as others. It’s a risk to get a player of his caliber.

I don’t see us securing two 7 year contracts via free agency in the same year,

Honestly with the way Lindholm is playing I doubt he gets 8 million per year, I can see somewhere between 5-6 unless he picks it up drastically.

Those trades are bad for Boston.

Not signing Elias for that and I seriously doubt Noah is available to them.

The last 2 games the Bs and Leafs played just proved that Woll is not enough to beat Boston in the 1st round, let alone the cup. Next season is the last chance for the Leafs to win with Tavares and Marner still under contract. One of them is gone after that, if not both. It would make sense for the Leafs to go all in, but I'm not sure if its with Ullmark, even though he'll be the best cheapest goalie available.

Geekie and Peeke cost less than Mangiapane so I don't like that deal considering this scenario has them way over the cap

Regular season and playoffs be different as people seem to miss to often

Example NYR swept Carolina in regular season and in playoffs they got swept

Woll struggled in regular season but could absolutely dominate in playoffs

First, in division trades are pretty rare - especially between direct rivals.
Second, no chance Leafs make that trade. And hard to criticize Woll over recent back to back Ls to Bruins - he was coming off extended injury.

I fully expect Sweeney to pursue Lindholm. There was too much smoke on Boston trying to acquire and lock him up for them not to make a compelling offer unless they fill the void before free agency,

I’d rather they pay a premium for a good player instead of a collection of secondary players if it comes to that. Sweeney could hold out and go bargain shopping.

I don’t think he gets $8m, but I’m expecting in the $7M range

His price tag is dropping every day. Be lucky to get 6-6.5. He won’t hit 50 points this year.

Wishful thinking. Hope you are right because I believe we are going to sign him.

If you were to ask me today I would say Debrusk is more valuable than he is and few wish to pay him. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do you think Sweeney only pursues what fans think is a responsible contract? There are fans that complained about Pasta, Ullmark, McAVoy, Carlo, and Lindholm. Players generally extract what they can and fans will question whether it’s responsible. That’s any sport.

Patience and waiting for the first / second round of free agency to pass before you decide to enter can be an effective means to secure bargain contracts. It also generally means some flaw is present.

What usually happens is the best guys sign to those that are aggressive and then GMs panic / extend the secondary market when cap space is present. You pay a premium for assets like Derek Forbort, Mike Reilly or an older player.

Ultimately, I believe that Sweeney is going to complete his pursuit of Elias Lindholm for a salary that people are going to complain about. It’s based on circumstantial evidence at best, but that’s every plan from fans.

We’ll likely have about $11M to split among 2 players or $16M to split among 3 players if we trade Ullmark. Lots of options. I’m not discounting some because of one off year where frankly they have a lot of things that could create a distraction.

My preference would be a minimum of $4m of that be in expiring contracts for cap health beyond this year, which is why keeping Ullmark seems very viable.

I’ll be curious if Boston goes for older players on shorter term contracts or premium players on longer term contracts. It’s going to be fascinating. I think Zacha’s versatility is going to push open a lot of options

He has to be kicking himself for not accepting that offer from Calgary.

I believe he is going to sign in the 7 to 7.5m range for the next 7 years. Lost money definitely compared to the Calgary offer, but he’ll likely be with a better team in a more appealing market and will have generational wealth either way.

Let's revisit this after your first round matchup against either the Bruins (Bs in 6) or the Panthers (FLA in 4)
