Hronek and Roy

Created by: TMLBRIAN

Initial Creation Date: Apr. 2, 2024
Published: Apr. 2, 2024

Description
Thoughts?

I wanted to make and AGM where we fully upgraded our D. This means Hronek can't agree with Vancouver. Maybe a bit of an overpay going to Vancouver (I like Lily).

Who knows if Quillian is ready. Sounds like he may get a chance. Could be Minten or a vet as well. A lot of options there.

If Hronek takes 7.25 the Canucks will just sign him for that

As for the trade I doubt they take a cap dump like Kampf back. And I like Liljegren but I’m not sure if they would take him and a late 1st. I think they’d rather something closer to a 1 for 1 with another player of a similar caliber (likely another RFA or pending UFA makes the most sense)

I don’t see Hronek as the type of D we need; combine that with his contract demands (we can’t afford him) & aquisition cost (cupboards are already bare) and I’d steer clear.

Here’s what I’d offer: Hronek and Raty for Minten, Liljegren and a 1st.

Vancouver wouldn't move Hronek if he's willing to sign for that much

Career .919sv% while playing on some horrendous defensive teams like Anaheim, Edmonton, and Philly. It he’s up to a .926sv% behind a good defence.. hell $2.4m for 2 years seems like a good deal for that

Vancouver has no leverage to even ask for that. You’d be lucky to get a 1st and a young roster player. No chance a good prospect is added in as well

Good backups get 2.5-3.5m easy. He is having a great year and has been very solid his entire career. I may have under paid him here actually.

Really Really like Jarnkrok. Very versatile and serviceable player on a decent cap him. I only moved him here to make the cap work. He would be a great add to any team, if the Leafs did move him. (low likelihood).

Very happy keeping him.

To be fair, I signed Roy as well. We need a top pair defensive guy (Roy) but we also need more puck moving and offense generation from our D (Hronek).

I understand wanting to steer clear though.

Backup goalies are dime a dozen; I sort of figure goalies between #20 & #60 in the league are absolutely interchangeable. Performance may vary between them in a given year, but it’s an absolute crap shoot once you get outside ~top 15- 20.

he's been decidedly average at best for the bulk of his career and 1 good season with less than 30 games played on one of the best teams in the league doesnt make him worth anything close to that much money. You have significantly over paid him.

I get that - What do you think the Leafs should do for goalie next year? What are your top candidates and options and at what prices?

Stolarz is my personal number one candidate. Let Woll do his thing, while having a BIG competent back up. Let Hildeby develop some more.

I personally don't want to spend more than 2.5m on a goalie for next year. Hence why I don't see Sammy coming back.

Would love to hear what you would do or want to do.

I’d love to get Sammy back, $2.5M x 2 max. We can’t forget he was truly abysmal in first half. If that won’t work, just sign any capable vet goalie ($2M & 2 years max) to hold the fort until Hildeby is ready in 26-27. Like I said, it’s a total crap shoot to me so hopefully Leafs extensive mgmt team has a better idea on candidates . Not too worried about it and just like this year, have a 3rd goalie stashed with Marlies as insurance.

Ya similar logic to me. You would just go under 2m. I would go under 2.5m. Hence Stolarz. I would do that for Sammy also, but I don't see it happening.

well if you want a guy who has proven he can be a starter for around 3 mill, you can just keep samsonov. If you want to spend bigger and get a solidified starter you spend the cash on Swayman. If you want a back up then you spend about a million bucks on one of like 10 decent backups that are available and dont give them 200% of what they are worth like you did here.

If Hronek were a FA, I’d be more inclined but his contract demands are excessive for a guy that has yet to put up 50 points. I’m in total agreement on Roy or similar to play with Rielly; hopefully Lili can become the pick mover on 2nd pair

One of the few liljegren trades I actually like. That being said, hronek is at that will resign with Vancouver guaranteed. Van will look to what is proven vs unproven. This they will resign hronek.

I struggle to know exactly what Bush will command. I think his last contract was too steep. Although he was traded for a mid pick at the start of the year for his full cap. So more than 1 team was okay with the cap. I think he is a proper #6 or #7 dman. But he is a physical, defensive, right shot, RD. Those always get more than I think they should.

Most probable situation is that he signs the same or very similar contract than he did last time. 2.75m x 2 or 3 years. 2m x 3 years is the most I would do for him though.

What do you suggest he gets?

People say he was overpaid on 2 bottom feeder teams which would make any d-man look bad. He plays good on the the top d-pairing for the leafs at even 2.75M that's great value for the position. Hard to pay the bottom pairing guys more than what Benoit is getting 1.35M. Idk if he would sign that contract anyways. He probably would want 2.5M for sure.
