Oddly enough, they signed it as insurance in case they couldn't re-sign Pietrangelo; but it's actually a main cause as to why they can't re-sign Pietrangelo.

He has been paid $8M over 2 years. From what I saw in the CBA it appears that you compare that $8M vs $6.5M (3.25x2), $1.5M difference, 3 years left... $500K hit per year. But I wasn't sure if that was right.</div></div>
If he outright retires, the cap hit comes off the books as the team will no longer be paying him.

Florida actually makes some of the most sense for Lafreniere, because he can step into their top six and replace Hoffman who is most likely leaving in free agency, and for three years at a cheap ELC price no less. Acciari and Wallmark are bottom six centers, so I don't see either of them being a barrier to Lafreniere, or vice versa. Although in terms of team need, they really need better defensemen, as they've already got a pretty good forward group, even without one of Hoffman/Dadonov.

Is Tony DeAngelo the real deal?
He's a right-handed, puck-moving defenseman that can QB a PP1 unit with ease. Though he is a young, dynamic offensive defenseman, he is also poor defensively and has been noted for having attitude and on-ice issues. I'm not sure if that's continued throughout his time in New York, but that was one of the reasons two different teams traded him at such a young age. New York is more likely to trade him than extend him long-term, in my opinion, mostly because they've already got Trouba locked up long-term (and is practically unmoveable) and a younger Fox has emerged while being both better and cheaper. Both are right-handed top 4 defenseman, so NY likely doesn't want to make such a big commitment to him when they can easily supplant him. I think he's more likely to get a bridge deal, simply because he only has had a couple of seasons playing really good hockey, so it makes more sense to bridge him than commit to him long-term.
Also I'm not sure why you think he was a healthy scratch, he played 68/70 games last season.

Torey Krug
Boston is in a good enough spot to where they can afford to let Krug walk, even if they do have the cap space.
I feel Grzelcyk can easily step into Krug's role on the 2nd pair and still be successful. Krug didn't play against top lines regularly so it shouldn't be too much of a step up for Grz. The real test would be on the PP where Krug thrived. McAvoy looks primed to take that spot, but if they want to keep him on PP2 to reserve his minutes for 5v5 and the PK, Grz can step in and just feed the puck to the Big 3 and just remain competent.
Lauzon, Vaakanainen, Zboril or even John Moore should be able to play 3rd pair minutes, so it's not like they're completely barren if they let Krug walk, which I think they should.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ColonelX</b></div><div>I'm with you, your last sentence screams "bridge deal" not 57M$ mega deal.
It's appalling that this team just seems to be bad at every single level of the organization. Let's say that they aren't the wealthiest team in the league, their GM's giving away risky deals and the team has picked top 12 in 6 of past 7 drafts (Make it 7 out of 8 but they traded their 2020 pick for a guy walking out in FA) but their farm system's only middle of the pack.</div></div>
Based on the deals given to Keller, Schmaltz, Dvorak, and Chychrun, Chayka likes to bet big and early on his young talent with the hopes that they progress into great players. It's a smart move, assuming all your players grow the way you hope they do, but can end up handcuffing you for a long time if they don't pan out.

I've definitely soured on him since this contract was signed.
On one hand, he gets very favorable zone starts and doesn't play against other teams' top lines, so his lack of production and weak underlying numbers are a cause for concern.
On the other hand, Arizona isn't exactly filled with talent so the best forwards he's been on the ice with are an aging Phil Kessel, Derek Stepan, and Nick Schmaltz. He also saw a dip in his ice time this season and is still pretty young.
Having said all that, this deal isn't looking too great. He's still a very talented player, but hasn't been able to put it all together thus far.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Kotkaniemi15</b></div><div>I don’t understand how Toronto is so high. Dallas definitely got shafted.</div></div>
Speaking as a Stars fan and someone that hates Toronto, I get it.
Toronto has some of the best high-end talent in the league and their forwards are also among the best. Aside from this season, Andersen has been one of the more consistent goaltenders over the past several years so if he returns to form they're dangerous. But they also bleed shots so a below average goaltending performance will sink them
And for Dallas, their final 10 games or so, where they lost 6 straight, are still in the back of everyone's minds. I don't think that negative momentum will carry over after over three months of not playing, but it can still be a cause for concern. Also, just looking at the point totals for their roster, everyone sees underperforming stars like Benn, Seguin, Pavelski, Radulov, and Klingberg. While they do play a stout defensive game and have excellent goaltending, scoring goals is the hardest thing to do in the NHL so a lack of offense could easily be their undoing.

Who benefits the most from the break in play?
Aside from the obvious injury recoveries, it likely helps teams like Dallas that were on a huge losing streak at the break; I believe they were at 6 or 7 straight games without a win. The break could allow them to get out of the funk they were in. A couple of more losses would've caused them drop out of the top 4 and participate in the play-in round. Now they have the opportunity to go into the top 4 round robin and potentially get a much better seeding than their regular season points would have originally allowed them.
