<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>History shows he will get a crazy contract and history also shows in 2 years he wont be worth it... Of course I could be wrong, but it seems a player always has a career year when their contract is up - they get a mega deal then never sniff those numbers again -- until they're in the final year of their contract -- then they have a "rebound" season...... It's crazy.

Whats up with players having career years in the last year of their deal?

Yea, I know Karlsson is young but I really think he overachieved this season as the entire Vegas Knights team did - he will get 6M x 8 and probably will be a 50 point player - a 25/25 guy..

It must suck to be in that position as a GM. You know this guy just had a career year and you know he's not going to sniff that production again but you cant afford to lose him because the risk outweighs the reward....

If I was McPhee, I would offer 4.5M x 2 and wait to see if he's given an offer sheet, if he does then I would consider matching it - let the market dictate what Karlsson is worth rather than making a mistake. Karlsson is an RFA so it's not like he won't be compensated if some GM gives Karlsson a ridiculous offer... Give another GM a chance to make the mistake first.</div></div>

You could also argue from other GMs perspective to not offer sheet him at all for the very same reasons you stated. But yeah, I agree with everything you wrote. If McPhee is smart he just goes for a 1-2 year deal.

and Karlsson's market value will set itself, he has arbitration rights.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>Bowman had his back against the cap ceiling last summer - not only that but he had quite a few NHL ready prospects in Rockford last year as well - give those two facts it was obvious the Hawks would be playing a lot of kids this season. Now that these kids have had their audition Q and Bowman are going to have to figure out who stays and who goes. This summer Bowman will have cap space to work with and we all know the Hawks aren't in a position to be developing players as the core gets older so I would only expect to see (outside of Schmaltz &amp; DeBrincat) only a handful of these kids back next season, and the rest of the roster filled out with veteran guys.

I have 100% confidence the Hawks will be back contending again next April.... Had Bowman had the cap space this team would be playoff bound. Like I have said plenty of times: <em>the problem isn't what the Hawks have - it's what they don't have</em>. With that said - now that Bowman has some space and the Hawks needs are nothing major - there is no question in my mind that this will be a very much improved team come October.

I think this season was Bowman's "worst case scenario" nightmare when he designed this team last summer, but with failure comes a nice draft pick... IMO, this is a great team (an incomplete but great team) that just had a terrible season.

Lets not forget going into the playoffs last season the Hawks were one of the favorites to win the Cup again. Look, teams can go down hill or fade - but they don't go down hill or fade away over night. They were beasts a year ago. Look at who the Hawks lost and who Bowman replaced them with - rookies and bargain bin signings.</div></div>

I know you're a true hawks fan and know your stuff HF28. I'm not so sure they had quite a few NHL ready prospects last year. In Fact the Hawks "System" was 2nd or 3rd worst in the entire NHL. I mean the Ice Hogs were 25-39-9-3. AND besides Debrincat didn't have anyone that wasn't on the NHL roster. I do see your point though that besides a lottery player...it may take a few years which they don't really have....with that said...taking on 1 year rentals really does mean they will have enough for UFAs. I also hear your point that I thought I address in the description that many things factor into the results this year. Injuries/starting slow/salary cap/etc... I also believe that if just Crawford was better they'd make the playoffs...but another 1st round exit. I'm too spoiled for just 1st round exits. I want more!!! ALSO, what do you do with the UFAs @ the TDL when you're a boarderline playoff team? I think he should bit the bullet...IF...you're a boarderline playoff team. If they're playing great! GREAT! But Rutta and Oesterle can Bring in something great. Maybe better separated. Them being UFAs would make next year VERY costly. Lastly, also again to a great point you made...TBL didn't make the playoffs last year also due to injuries and now they're clearly a top team. HOWEVER their farm system is MUCH better than the Hawks which is why i do want to build that up a bit...but we can do that after Toews/Kane/Keith are gone I guess. THANKS FOR CONTRIBUTING!!!

Thread: We need a D
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>I like the additions especially Tyler Bozak, and Colin Miller is what we need on the blue line, however Bowman should add a few more veteran depth players..

Also you can bet the Hawks will be taking a defenseman with their first round pick this year and that defenseman may be NHL ready. This is an extremely deep draft with many of the top prospects NHL ready... If we don't win the lotto as of today we're drafting #7 and in that #7 slot I see the Hawks taking Evan Bouchard and he may be NHL ready. Of course if we win the lotto and draft in any of the first 3 slots I see the Hawks taking Dahlin at #1 and maybe Boqvist at #2-3 but in the event the Hawks draft #2-3 it would be difficult to pass on one of the top forwards Tkachuk, Svechnikov or Zadina... The real question is what do you do if you do end up with the #2-3 slots and you're already sold on taking a defenseman like Boqvist or Bouchard? trade down to #5 and add a second round pick, or just take Boqvist at #2?

IMO Boqvist is absolutely NHL ready.</div></div>

In my opinion I'd like to see the Hawks take the best available player when it's their turn to pick. At #1 definitely take Dahlin, #2-4 one of the forwards. If we draft a forward then I would like to see us trade one of Duclair, Vinnie, or Anisimov and possibly Nashville's 1st to get a top 4 D (such as a Justin Faulk). If we draft an NHL-ready D then I would like us to sign a 3rd line center or a top-6 winger (such as JVR). Might sound like a pipe dream but I think the Hawks have some good assets to contend next year. My philosophy is that you can never have too many defensemen, especially with Keith and Seabs getting older. But damn Tkachuk would be fun to watch on the left side of Kane and Schmaltz.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HawksFan28</b></div><div>I know the circumstances with Toronto, my point is that Tavares wouldn't turn down an offer from Toronto..

The Rangers tho, you can bet your ass they're going to make Tavares a massive offer (14 per), however if Tavraes cares about stuff other than money he wont sign... It's the Rangers dude, it's what they do... LOL, you can bet if the Rangers can pluck Tavares from NYI they're going to do it...

But no, I highly doubt Tavares will sign with the Rangers, and Tavares signing in Toronto is purely dependent on Lou and I don't think he's stupid enough to sign him and throw away his long-term plan, but if you're going to toss a plan for any player it would be a player of Tavares skill...... The only reason why I mention Toronto is because Tavares would sign there and you would have to think Lou would be open to moving one of Marner or Nylander if it mean he could improve the team with Tavares, because at the end of the day who's ALWAYS going to be the better player? Tavares, Nylander or Marner - JT will always be the best player of the three........ This is why Toronto is a possibility...

If I was in Lou's shoes and I knew Tavares wanted to sign with me, I would think long and hard about trying to make that happen, and if that meant I would have to trade one of my younger players I may consider it knowing I could get a boatload of assets back for one of them. Tavares is only 27 so he's absolutely young enough to justify trading a younger "core" player if it means you will have a 27 year old of Tavares talent centering a line...</div></div>

Interesting and possible idea. Tavares is for sure a better player than both Marner and Nylander. If we did sign JT we'd likely trade Marner considering Nylander already has a solid place on Matthews' wing. However, I don't see this happenin; blockbuster trades are a major risk, just look how trading Turris messed with Ottawa. Besides I'd hate to see Marner go, due to his incredible skill set, he's got great speed, hockey iq, stick handling, etc. So chances are if JT does hit FA, Lou will spare the locker room mess and just keep to the plan. On the other hand, this is a tough league in which only the best of the best can bring home the Cup, and signing Tavares would most certainly make Toronto among the best of the best, add in the stash of picks and prospects a Marner trade would acquire and you have a Cup winning team. Also factor in the fact that Tavares would likely be open to joining the Leafs in FA, and we have a super hard choice for Lou and management if JT goes unsigned.
