Jelvis Skinzlikins
Chinakov isn't a guy Columbus has any interest in moving and Skinner really makes no sense for Columbus given his age and cost. Just doesn't fit their timeline.
If you think Elvis is a guy that could help out Buffalo (which seems like the case considering you're trading for him), it makes way more sense just to trade a mid round pick for him or something

Why would they play the absolutely awful cap dump who they'd likely buy out after the season rather than give their young, potentially good future goaltender NHL games? Makes no sense whatsoever. Not sure why you're mentioning the return/cost either when my point was only about how opening up a spot in net helps CBJ evaluate the future/get Jet NHL experience. It's like you didn't even read what I said and just assumed I was complaining about the value of the trade or something.

…which might not be a bad deal for Columbus if they want to honor his trade request. Lavoie may not amount to anything, but Merzlikins hasn’t been consistent enough to be worth $5.4M, and he’s got three more years at that cap hit, so I think his contract makes him a liability for most teams. Not as much of a liability as Campbell’s, which is why Edmonton has to give up a package of futures to make this work.
That said, I don’t think Martin and Tarasov are good enough to be an NHL goaltending tandem, so Columbus might be better to patch things up with Elvis than trade him for Campbell and some futures. Martin being waived makes me think that that’s what they’re trying to do.</div></div>
I know this isn't the main point going on here, but moving Elvis gives them the ability to take the rest of the season to evaluate Tarasov PLUS give Jet Greaves, who actually has real potential to be a future 1, some NHL time for the rest of the year. Then they'd hopefully get a good idea where they'll stand next season and if they need to make a move. They already suck, so having a terrible goaltending room the rest of the year isn't a concern at all.

That's the kind of offer I'd actually entertain for Jenner. Idk if Colorado should be willing to give up Byram though.

CBJ don't retain 50% through 2027, just no chance that happens. I doubt they'd even entertain moving Jet either.

Explain how going from Elvis to Campbell (aka, going from a mediocre, but overpaid goalie to a completely unplayable black void and only saving 400k a year for the same length) and only getting a 2nd for it, makes sense?

I get this is a Flames ACGM, but this move makes 0 sense for Columbus. Regardless of value, trading a likely top 5 pick for a 2nd 30+ year old goaltender with a large contract, as well as a pending UFA (who wouldn't fit the team's timeline even if they were miraculously able to resign him), just doesn't add up.
Even if the only piece going back to Calgary was the 1st, it still wouldn't make any sense for CBJ to make a move like this.

Rakell is overpaid off an outlier year and over 30. Columbus has no interest in that. Marchenko is perfect for their timeline. Plus not sending him to a divisional opponent

Everything else aside, Columbus would be delusional to trade Voronkov. He should be locked in as a piece of the young core along with Fantilli, Jiricek, Johnson, ect

He's looked night and day from last year. Team is still kinda cheeks, so maybe not showing up in box score cause of that, but his advanced stats have been fairly good. Gives me faith that it's not just a "this guy plays for my team and is doing slightly better, so I think he's breaking out" kinda thing. Regardless though, even if he's not gonna be a core piece, he's still a young player they've invested in for a few years that's finally starting to come along and they need to hold onto those rather than flipping them for picks if they have any hope of turning things around soon/

The problem is that this isn't the right price though. The best part of your package is a late 2nd rounder and then it's a bunch of meh. They weren't willing to move Jenner for a 1st at the deadline 2 years ago, so why in the world would you think this gets him?

Not enough there to retain half (doubt they'd be willing to anyway with the term Laine has left)
I'd do like 1.5-2 mil retention for a 1st and a mid round pick, but if a team want 50% retained in a deal, I think CBJ are better off just eating the contract.

Damn, can't argue that logic, sure you can have Laine for that!!!
In all seriousness, a late 1st probably doesn't even get you 3 years of 3.5 mil retained, before you even pay for the player (see Edmonton trying to get rid of Campbell)

Personally I don't really see the point here. A collection of low value late round picks really doesn't do that much for Tampa going forward.
Selling of Stamkos is really the only future focused move they could make that would bring back true value, but considering how the team is constructed and contracts and all, I think their only real option is just to ride it out to the end kinda how Pittsburgh has, at least short term next couple years or so.

Flame On
Regardless of the value on each side, why would Columbus have any interest in adding 2 very large 30+ year old contracts that are both being underperformed?
Laine's deal isn't pretty at all, but Huberdeau's is clearly worse. Market romance has 1 year less than Elvis I guess, but Elvis at least looks mid now and is slightly cheaper so call that a wash. The only positive here is that they get out of paying a 7D level player 2.7 for the next couple years.

That's true. I didn't even really think about the issues with Colorado's cap doing that. Provorov is kinda whatever though. If he was excluded though I wouldn't like it regardless. If Byram's health was a sure thing, him vs KJ wouldn't be close, but even the concussions aside the most games he's played in a regular season is 42 and that's super sketchy as much as I love his game.

Redoing Things in the 2022 Offseason
Like this a lot. Personally, I'd still want to do the Gaudreau signing IF Gudbranson isn't a package deal. I'm still not clear on that whole dynamic and whether it would've come up or not without them signing Gudbranson. Having an elite player, even if he's not that no. 1 guy on a cup quality guy still provides a lot of value and with Zach being the only large contract here, they've got plenty of room to make it work and money wouldn't even be a concern for another 3 years, if that. Top line looks a lot better and I think would help Fantilli's growth a lot more with Gaudreau there and Jenner bumped down.
Since you mentioned coaching, I know they hired Larson the prior season, but if they'd gone internal I would've much rather had Shaw than Larson. If anyone already in the org deserved a chance, I think it was him. I would've also went balls to the walls for Laviolette this offseason. I think he would've been he perfect guy, though I think it's a hard sell to convince him to not take the NYR job he'd presumably still be offered. I would've gone after him the second Washington let him go though and maybe been able to grab him quickly.
Lastly, since you mentioned Severson and the HC from this offseason, I'd add that I also wouldn't make the Provorov deal. I think he's a good fit in terms of short term 2 year player for that 2LD spot as prospects develop (though Meteychuk seems to basically be ready now, who woulda though lol). I was not cool with giving up the 1st for him though. If Philly was asking for that LA pick, I would've just moved on and looked for a FA or something to fill that spot on a 2-3 year deal, even if it was a worse option. Saw a lot of arguments this offseason that it didn't matter if they overpaid for Provorov cause the pick was "basically free" from the Korpi/Gavrikov deal, but I think that mindset is awful. At the point you made that trade and got the pick, it's not free. Good job getting a 1st for 2 expiring deals, but now that you have it it's an asset you should value, not throw away on an overpay you could've just solved in FA cause you think you're playing with house money or whatever. And worst case, I'd play Blankenburg (who should be in the lineup imo) there, or Bean/Boqvist on the left side short term.
