Goodow to TOR
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Jimbo1119</b></div><div>Not really a fair take here...
At the right cap hit, and utilized the proper way (either 4th line or 3rd line-if 3rd line designed to have more of a defensive/shut down role) Goodrow is a pretty good player. Problem is, he is way overpaid for that type role. But at a Cap hit of 2-2.5M per, Goodrow would be a positive addition to most teams- especially the handful of teams looking at good possibilities going deep in their Cup pursuit.</div></div>
Not to be that guy but his analytics are bad and down from previous years. He isn't at a caphit of 2-2.5 hes at 3.6 and this proposal only retained like 600 grand. His decline has set in and he is still on the books for another 4 years after this. If he was a free agent last summer taking a 1M X 1 year deal to play on the fourth line could be justified, but getting locked into that contract is a death sentence when managing the cap. Hes the reason you couldn't resign Buchnevich, and i dont feel like being the team who has to trade a excellent player for diddly squat because we go after already declining, overpaid grinder depth defensive role players who are a dime a dozen every offseason.

Going for the cup move by Toronto means taking on a bad player with a bad contract? Drury will have to live with his worst move and have Goodrow for the rest of that awful contract he signed because no one is going to take him off your hands.

If you think any team is going to beat this massive overpay for a 50 - 60 point career center currently on a shooting percentage binger its time to go to the retirement home.

Lets Do It TOR
Leafs literally couldn't do this with the 50 contract limit, but even if we could there is no way they should. As a Leaf/Flames fan i feel confident in saying that Kerfoot and Engvall have definitely under performed, and im actively thinking of trades to get rid of Kerfoot to bring in someone more useful , but that someone is most definitely not Lucic.

This makes the team worse. Schenn would be an alright 7 th D option but i wouldn't want Myers even if he could be 75% retained. Hes tall, not good. Holl is better than him. Sandin has given up a few bad turn overs but its no reason to ship him away for a net negative value.

So do you follow them or not?
getting a LHD will replace Muzzin and allow Brodie to go back to play the right side, which is where he has played the most in his career. Brodies ability to play either side effectively allows the leafs to look for a LHD or a RHD.

Refined
What about Campbells start to the season makes you think we would want him and his (retained) contract back? The main reason he didn't get a contract offer like that from Dubas is the Length of the deal. His poor start to the season makes his contract an anchor earlier than anticipated. If Edmonton is looking to move on they will be the team having to offer up picks/prospects to get rid of him. The answer will still be no.

Hanifin for Nylander ideally once Kylington Returns

Hanifin swap for Nylander would be the only part of this i would entertain, the Leafs have no need for the rest of the trade . I wouldn't even swap Hanifin for Nylander in our situation. I just think they have similar value if you ignore Hanifins slow start to the season.

Leafs are my number 1 team and Flames are my number 2 team. Nylander for Hanifin straight up is relatively equal in a vacuum. No way would i add Liljegren into any trade. In my opinion he is the most important blue liner for the future success of our team.

Doesn't matter if he feels he deserves more and also feels like his opportunity to show hes worth more is stifled. Which will cause him to sour on the org and ask for a change of scenery. The can't just ignore how players feel and expect them to show loyalty later on when they do have more negotiating power.

That's a nice recipe for having Sandin break with the organization and publicly demand a trade. Yes we own his rights and its a negotiation but you can't just treat young players like dirt and expect them to want to stick around at all.

Going forward
A ton of these signing are absolutely best case scenario if all the core are absolutely committed to winning a cup with Toronto.
Realistically speaking i dont think Nylander or Matthews take discounts anywhere near what you've suggested here.
If Nylander continues to be a 30 goal ppg player he would get offered a lot more than 7M, and he would be a fool to accept a long term deal that doesn't give him a raise. When factoring in the increased salary cap this is him taking a huge pay cut just in terms of his current contract. Who believes Nylander is going to take a paycut?
Matthews is going to get offered huge money from a team like LA if he gets anywhere near free agency. He is going to be 26 years old when he is eligible to sign a new deal as a UFA. What team with 14M million in cap space isn't going to offer him that kind of money.
I still think there is a good chance we hold onto Matthews and Nylander but there is no way they take contracts with low of an AAV.

I wouldn't be against flipping Weegar but Holl and Kerfoot dont move the needle that much. We would end up flipping them for picks too and wouldn't get much. Weegar is good enough to get a first and a legit prospect.

If Habs choose to rebuild for 1 more year
Gallagher, Hoffman and Petry all have term and are on the wrong side of 30 (or soon to be) and already declining production. Those contracts will cost you to move on from, especially Gallagher. If he starts with the Habs next year and seems on track again for 30/20 type season you might find a GM dumb enough to take on the declining side of his career for something but i wouldn't bet on it.
