Also, thank you for the idea of pro rating the points. I have been working on a mega leafs cap chart for awhile (will finish and release at season end) and that is something I should put into it.

Every year in hockey, there’s at least 5-6 teams who are considered cup contenders. A lot of times any of the 16 teams that qualify have a punchers chance.
Would it be overly surprising to anyone if Nashville, San Jose, Winnipeg, Tampa, Vegas, Washington, Pittsburgh or Toronto won?
All have great teams, all have some warts.
In a hypothetical universe, let’s say San Jose puts Karlsson on the block and the Leafs can pick him up for a first, Sandin and Kapanen (troll disclaimer: no, I don’t think EK is available nor would that offer be near enough.). Would the leafs adding EK to their blue line guarantee anything?
Would it make them head and shoulders above Tampa who they’d have to get past in the 2nd round at the earliest?
No. There’s never any guarantees. I’m hard pressed to think of any MAJOR deadline acquisition that catapulted a team from ‘one of the contenders’ to Cup champs.
Maybe Bourque to Colorado? Avalanche were already a cup favourite but that’s the only example that comes to mind.
IMO, deadline is best for adding complimentary and depth pieces to an already good team, or for restructuring teams to offload vets for futures. Not for contending teams to sell the farm to add a stud in hopes the few weeks you have him for get you a ring.

I agree with what you are saying (besides Hamilton, no thank you). Depth moves are more than likely what we will see. Don’t like the idea of bumping out Ozzy but it’s much better than the prospect of an injury in the playoffs and having to move in Holl or marincin.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>If the two forwards are Brown and Hyman, it's an easy trade. Would any team trade their #2 Dman for Brown and Hyman? No. So trading easily replaceable depth forwards is a no brainer.
Notice how much more the #1 line is scoring without Hyman? It's beautiful.</div></div>
Couldn't agree more. Hyman is a great forechecker and an important guy on this team, but he is replaceable. T. Moore looks to have the same hustle to me, with better hands - he just doesn't have the experience. So give him some expereince. Same goes for Grundstrom, Marchmant, etc. I think people sometimes forget that Hyman and Brown were kinda lost in the wilderness until they were given a shot in 2016. When its time to move on from some guys for Cap reasons (and only becasue of cap reasons), Babs will need to give other guys some opportunities, just like he did the when the leafs had like 8 rookies and made the palyoffs. I'm on the fence with Gardiner resigning - I think both he and the leafs want to make it happen - but I'd take Gards over Hyman and Brown anyday all day

Explaining to Everyone Whats Going on in Ottawas rink
Left out the part where Melnyk filed a 700 million dollar lawsuit against Trinity Development and John Ruddy, but aside from that you covered all the bases pretty well.
My interpretation from the outside (which is pure speculation) is that Melnyk thought that since he'd be bringing the NHL team, he wouldn't have to pay his fair share. Ruddy being an actual good businessman, put his foot down. This puts Melnyk into stall mode, hoping he can drag this out until he can come up with the money (he gets a cut of that Seattle expansion money) or until Trinity Backs down.
Once the NCC issued their ultimatum, Melnyk realizes he's probably going to lose his bid, and be left with nothing. This is the reason for the lawsuit.

2020 Seattle Expansion Draft - Protected List
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tomkinoo</b></div><div>Thanks for clearing that up.
Wow, so the expansion draft is looking pretty bleak for our forward crop, 5 of Brown, Hyman, Johnsson, Grundstrom, Moore, Leivo exposed</div></div>
It could be a lot worse. We made out great in the last expansion so we shouldn't get to worked up about this one. It would suck for us to put so much effort into developing Grundstrom, just to watch him get taken and excel in Seattle though. I think i would move on from Brown and Hyman who will soon after need new more expensive contracts, and try and keep the presumably still cheap Grundstrom who has a ton of upside imo. We will be in a big cap crunch at that point and letting go of Brown and Hyman and replacing them with cheap internal options seems like something Dubas would do.

2020 Seattle Expansion Draft - Protected List
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tomkinoo</b></div><div>Grundstrom would have to be protected if he played 40 games in 2019, because Marleau will still be there and because I think Moore is ahead of him in the system I don't see that happening. He'll definitely play in the Nhl in the 2019 season but probably not 40 games.
As for Lilegren I'm not sure, this what it says on NHL.com
* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).
Not sure if the AHL would count for professional experience, but I am pretty sure he will play 40 games in 2019, unless we sign or trade for someone to replace Hainsey</div></div>
I think if you are under 20 years old the only way to accrue a professional year of experience is to play at least 10 games in the NHL. So as long as LIlgegran doesn't play 10 games in the NHL this year he would still not have technically accrued any professional experience as defined by the CBA. Grundstrom on the other hand has a birthday that falls in a period where his age 19 season in the AHL is technically considered an age 20 season because of when his birthday happens.

What I do see is a Habs fan lying about skipping the Habs game to watch the leafs and barging in to piss on everyone else’s parade because he thinks the Habs are the centre of the universe then has the audacity to call us arrogant.

yes, but they do not have anyone that requires a significant raise for next year left. So why not get a 2nd round pick for taking on marleaus cap hit for 1 year, and paying him 800K over two years because of a buyout. It's a win win. It makes AZ better long term with an extra high pick.
Literally everyone in this transaction benefits. Marleau gets more money, still plays for the leafs. Leafs get cap relief. Arizona gets a pick, and doesnt hurt their ability to sign anyone long term. what's not to like?

Really takes the wind out of the sales for trading Nylander. The defence isn't bad enough to warrant overpaying for a replacement when there will be someone available that can upgrade Hainsey and not cost a huge asset.

Yea, I think the KHL or SHL is very possible option. The other reason not to trade Nylander especially if he gets a much bigger salary, is the that it sets a bad precedent. Would that just encourage other Leafs from "holding out" next year in hopes being traded so they can get a larger salary. So, the Leafs might just make a statement by not trading him, even if it hurts them on the ice this year.

Worst Case Scenario for 2019
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tomkinoo</b></div><div>I don't think the offer sheets happen either, was just listening to Leafs Lunch talking about it and wanted to see how it'd look if it happens.
With Nylander I don't think it has happened because teams know the offer sheet would have to be 8 million + for Nylander to accept it, history shows us that only Edmonton would think that's what Nylander is worth.
As for Matthews and Marner it'd be a similar thing, both of them clearly want to play in Toronto, so the offer sheet would have to throw them a lot more money for them to accept it, and I don't think many teams can afford that along with loosing 4 first round picks or 2 , a second and a third.</div></div>
Leafs lunch is getting hard to listen too, speculation and pandering to the lowest common denominator for ratings is all they do these days.
Players need to tell their agents to go looking for offersheets for them to even be offered one. The only time that happens is if they are getting seriously lowballed or they want out. I don't see either of those scenarios for Marner or Matthews.

Fair. Moore wasn't on my sheet, maybe just didn't resign him? Would be more than willing to give him a spot over Bracco and Engvall. Brown trade cost I think is somewhere between a 3 and 6. For cap reasons it is irrelevant, just kind of picked randomly, but I wouldn't disagree with Brown for a 4

I hate the thought of trading Nylander
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MelonVK</b></div><div>Why is Eichel getting 10m when Crosby makes 8.7? Because the cap rises. This is natural progression. When Crosby signed it was about McDavid money, it's not today. The comparable contracts are all at least one year old if not two. Also Scheifele and Pastrnak hadn't exploded at the time, you can't account for the player scoring crazy AFTER he signs, that's hindsight bias.</div></div>
Gaudreau accounts for 9.25% of the cap
Pastrnak 8.89
Larkin 7.67
Ehlers 8
Forsberg 8.22
Given the cap is at 79.5, let's say Nylander goes for 8.3% of the cap, if my math is correct, that still only amounts to roughly 6.6M, that still makes tied for the 2nd highest paid player of the players mentioned here. Even with how the cap has gone up, anything in the range of 6.5-7 should be sufficient for him

Nylander is not worth anything more than 7M. Look at all the examples around the league.
Pastrnak 6.67x7
Larkin 6.1x5
Ehlers 6x7
Scheifele 6.25x8
Forsberg 6x6
Gaudreau 6.75x6
Nylander is at best only better than Larkin and Ehlers and even that's debatable. His demands are an outlier to say the least

Just look at how Sakic handled Duchene, he sat on that for a long time and hit a huge homerun by trading him to a desperate GM who was willing to massively overpay. Sit on Nylander under he either breaks and signs a deal that will keep him in Blue and White or wait till a desperate GM who's team can't score needs to make a move to save his job, then sell super high on Nylander.
But until then, just keep not trading.
