Marleau will not be traded at all. First, he has a NMC, meaning he would have to approve a deal anyway. Second, he is looking for a Stanley Cup, so why would he agree to go a worse team in the Ducks? He's moved his entire family to the city already from Cali, and now you want to send him back. He will play out his final year in Toronto, then retire and get hired by the Leafs in some sort of Player Development role.

As for Marchment, awful awful awful. Let's see what this kid can do before we ship him off. He's having a great year in the AHL and he'd be one of those cheap depth forward options the Leafs will desperately need in the fold after this season when some big contracts start kicking in.

Hes too far in the depth chart. He wont make the team over any of moore, grundestrom, bracco, brooks.

Says who? I think Marchment is second behind Moore is potential AHL forward call-ups and would not be at all surprised to see him in the NHL for at least 1 game at some point this season.

A NMC includes a NTC PLUS can't be waived.

He won’t. Unless it’s to be bought out and he can sign wherever he wants. Otherwise why would he downgrade teams at the end if career when he wants his name on a Cup. They gave him the NMC to assure him that it would not happen.

An nmc is more secure than an ntc. He can’t be moved. In other words even in an expansion draft he has to be protected. So this right there should tell you the likelyhood of him waiving.

Now this contract may be set up for him to retire and terminate his contract or trade it away. So if the leafs win the cup and by some crazy chance markeau wants to hang the skates up than just maybe.

meant to say NMC... why would he waive it, the reason he signed in toronto was to win a cup before he retires and no other contenders have the cap room for him plus he would have to agree to go there. Not saying impossible but very unlikely

my theory behind it is that the way the contract is set up is a tradable contract

doesn't metter how tradeable the contract is, the reason there is a NMC is the exact reason why your explanation of the trade doesn't make sense. He wants to win a cup not be sent to a team near the cap floor.

I am not saying better or not better, but he offers a unique skill set to that of players like Bracco, Brooks and Moore. Grundstrom plays with more of an edge than the others I mentioned. Both have played well but I think Marchment gets the call before Grundstrom this season.

The question isn't can he but why would he? Leafs have zero control whether he would or wouldn't and highly unlikely he does.

Why does everyone overlook Marleau's $3m signing bonus that's due July 1st? July 1st is after the buyout window closes. Yes, there is a possible 2nd buyout window, but it'll be near the start of August and teams will have already spent their money on UFAs and re-signing their RFAs.

Marlleu agrees to waive his NMC just to be bought out and loses $3m (signing bonus) + $417k (lost pay due to buyout. He'd need to get a $3.42m contract just to break even on actual money. He'd also have to sign with a team with as good or better chances of winning the Cup. The best chance for him to waive his NMC is: Tor wins the Cup this year, and he decides he wants to retire as a winner and the money doesn't matter.

Ok alot of people are saying alot of things but there are some problems with alot of your thinking.

NMC are similar to NTC but are more restrictive to the team. Under a NTC, Marleau would need to approve any trade but could be sent to the AHL without his approval. He would not need to be protected in an expansion draft depending on the terms of the NTC. In a NMC he could not be traded or sent to the AHL without his permission. Also in an expansion draft he would have to be protected unless he waives his NMC.

Second people say if Leafs win cup he could retire, if he does Toronto would be on the hook for his entire cap next year as he signed the contract when he was over 35. Under the CBA to stop teams from signing players to contracts like Marleau's there is a poison pill if the player retires then the team can not clear the cap until the contract has eneded.

I doubt he waves for any reason as he has setup his family in Toronto, he wants to one at least one if not two cups, and bouncing around at his age is not very appealing. Face it unless he hates being here Toronto and Marleau will be together for this and next season.

Also if he is bought out then there is the cap recapture penalty due to the front loaded contract.

If Toronto did, that they would be hard pressed to attract other UFA's.

As per the current CBA, a 35+ contract signs automatically carries a full no movement. The same applies to Ron Hainsey btw. A young GM like Kyle Dubas, who clearly wants to be loved by his players making all these promises and intending to follow through with them (Nylander, Leivo, etc.), there is no way a guy as loved as Marleau is going anywhere. And if you think Robidas Island is an option, think again. Have you seen the social media posts of Matthews and Marner with Marleau and his kids? Yeah, he has major leverage when the 2 best players on your team basically consider him a second father.

What does the expansion draft have to do with anything? Tor wins Cup and Marleau decides he's done and retires; which I think is unlikely:
- What would he care if he's traded? He can stay where he's at or move to Antarctica for some ice fishing.
- Tor could trade him, with assets, to a team that has plenty of cap room with no real money changing hands (Datsyuk), just dead cap.
- If he agreed to a trade the NTC/NMC don't have to be honored by whoever he is traded too.

Tor is just stuck with him, the same as many other teams are stuck with their NMCs. All these threads trading him to make cap space are just wishes. If he's playing hockey next year it'll be for Tor with his current contract.

The recapture penalty only applies to the long contracts (Parise, Suter, etc) signed before the last CBA. No real money is effected just teams are hit with the cap hit so they have less to spend on other players.

Marleau, being a 35+ contract the full AAV is already going to be the cap hit of any buyout. There is cap gain by paying him front or back loaded.
