Revisiting 2019-20 Trade Deadline

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2020
Published: May 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I expect the Pens to win the play in against Montreal but they will not get far after that. That third pairing is an absolute train wreck & will need to be extremely sheltered, like 10-12 minutes a game & that’s it. I would’ve looked for a replacement for those 2 cuz they’re not competent.

Thornton should be easily in the lineup over Rodregiues or Blueger

In terms of skill, he’s miles better than both but the Blueger line has excellent chemistry & I liked Rodrigues’ speed & forecheck.

I brought in Thornton for my hindsight team just so he can lift the cup.

I could just swap McCann & Rodrigues.

Teams have won the cup with a lot worse third pairing than JJ-Schultz....but ya not ideal.

I mean I don’t how you are getting more for less at the deadline tho...

Don’t love the forwards lines either but, eh. Minor changes like they arnt going to use Erod as a C over McCann or they would have in season, which they didn’t...Erod played LW on McCann’s line. I also play Marleau over Sheary, especially if Sheary is not in the top six, and Marleau plays PK.

As for that D, I mean if those guys were available even....idk I’d probably use guys that were actually traded then add value to outbid.

I don’t know if I even play Lyibushkin over Schultz. Just hope the time off does something for him

No offense to jumbo, but I don’t really care if he lifts the cup—I wouldn’t want it to be with PIT. He’s old and really can’t do much to help us win.
The 3rd pair of Schultz JJ was a dumpster fire that never got put out. My guess is they couldn’t find someone to take JJ and they kept Schultz for the potential upside. With the long layoff the playoffs will be more like a new season, so I think Schultz had potential to rebound. He’s been injured so much more time can’t hurt.

Thanks for the feedback. All fair points. I made the trades based on what I feel is fair value (Marleau & Thornton aren’t worth much, Sheary & Erod worth a bag of pucks, Kahun worth McCabe etc. We have seen flashes of Schultz’s offensive puck moving ability but it hasn’t been consistent, it certainly won’t get any better if he plays with JJ.

Well, not everyone likes Jumbo, so I can respect that, but we need to acknowledge that he has had an excellent career & established himself as one of the top players of the cap era. His underlying stats show he’s still a pretty good play driver in a limited role, so that’s why I brought him in to be the 13-14th Forward. The Pens have won cups with old players before like Cullen & Guerin who were less talented than Joe.

Hopefully Schultz rebounds & becomes a good offensive defenseman, but it will be tough if he doesn’t get moved away from JJ.

Well you would not be smart to not play him. You can say hes slow as much as you want, but he slows down the game around him, and imagine him on the PP passing to Malkin

That’s fair, I’ll play him over Sheary & move Erod to RW.
