Petry and Chara

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 3, 2022
Published: Feb. 8, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Petry is 100% an upgrade on the Leafs D. Half retained his contract doesn't look terrible. Montreal get alot of nice pieces to build off of, but they have the retention and Ritchie for this year and next. Montreal already has too many wingers with term. I assume they unload quite a few.

I understand Petry is not having a great year. But that entire team is. Let's be honest, he would be an upgrade over holl and at this cap hit, would be very reasonable.

Who says no?

Chara is just for added depth, experience, leadership. I understand he hasn't been great lately but I would rather him coming in as our 8th option rather than Biega and Dahlstrom. 5th to 3rd rounder. I am also aware he may not waive for Toronto.

+1 for not going with the popular narrative about Petry on here.

It's a very good package, I just can't see Petry waiving for another Canadian team nor MTL retaining that much for TOR.

No this is a serious trade proposal. Petry half retained would get a big package. You realize he is still a very good defencemen right? Not every single habs player is complete ****, even though the fan base thinks so. Maybe I overpayed here but I would love to hear other people chime in.

Popular narratives are mostly objectively and blantantly wrong. MTL would be hard pressed to retain that much for that long. But it is a good package and would be the type of package needed for them to do it. Very few right d options out there are actually upgrades for the Leafs and intrigue me. Petry half retained would be interesting Sticking Out Tongue. But HIGHLY unlikely.

And I would think Petry would waive for Toronto. Looking at the Leafs team, he would be going to a stanley cup contender. I am sure he wouldn't pass that opportunity.

Petry is 34 years old and has 3 more seasons left after this one. even if he was having a good season that contract would be a bad one to take on. This is way too much, way way way too much to take on that contract.
He's not worth half even if the habs retained 50%

Sorry, this is massive overpay for a guy who appears to declining and has a full three years left on this contract.
The math is wrong, how is Petry a 100% an improvement on the Leaf defence? Let's say he is 12% better than Dermot. Six Dmen play a each game...So that Petry makes the Leafs defence 2% better.

Percentages are what win championships and gold medals :P. Would you be interested in Petry half retained? If so what would you personally offer?

Well, I didn't see the retention part, without retention, petry is supposed to get a 1st and good prospect ( 1st and 2nd) , so the the team obviously has to add more, (amirov, der argechunstev), then Ritchie and dermott is for cap space, now that I realize, it's pretty fair.

His cap isn't that important this year but 3.125m for three full years is very important to the Leafs fragile cap. No I wouldn't be interested in Petry half retained because I don't see the value going forward
If I had to trade. Ritchie and Dermot for half retained Petry. That's it. Same cap for both teams next season. Leafs are on the hook for Petry at 3.125 for the following two years. Really I don't even like that offer.

You did see my comment earlier this evening. Gee, the Leafs outmuscled two Carolina Dmen for two goals last night. But I don't see posts that Canes have to decimate their team to get another Dman? (the Canes have the best GAA, Leafs 6th). But somehow Leafs fans have to endlessly tweak thinking something out their is better, regardless of cap or futures.

you really gotta stop believing everything you read about montreal player values. Leaked deadline costs are almost always gms and agents trying to maximise their own interests to increase bids and the returns are always way way lower.

I feel the same way. Most options that people tout are not true upgrades to what we have. Petry would be an upgrade though. But I am not touching his full 6m+ contract. At half price contract, I really like him for this year and next and our team look like true cup contenders for both years. Dont love the last 2 years of his contract but dont hate them either at 3m.

I was just trying to go outside of the norm :P. Finding a weakness on the Leafs is hard. The right side of the D can be upgraded though and is our one apparant hole or area to improve. Even though it is not bad at all. 14 or 15 out of the 16 teams that make the playoff this year will have scary looking teams. Gotta get the small advantages any where we can.

Take out Amirov and replace him with a B-, C+ tier prospect (Abruzzese or Kokkonen) and I think it is more likely to happen. Although either way I think it is unlikely montreal retains that much salary bc he does have 3 years left.

Petry has positive value regardless of the naysayers. How much is debatable.
Nobody is trading for this year's Petry. They are trading for next year's Petry with the hope he is more like last year's Petry.
Less of a risk than people make it out to be.

Even if there were no market, he still has value to Montreal. They don't have the luxury of throwing him away.
There is no Canadian market for him period. The only reason a move is being considered, is to get him closer to family by reducing exposure to covid restrictions. Until restrictions are relaxed in Canada, only US destinations make sense.

Montreal must be very selective with their usage of retention. They should only retain on one long term contract at most, in order to maximize returns on assets sold at the deadline or leveraged through 3rd party retention.
Until Price's situation is resolved, he should be the only long term retention possibility. For everyone else, cap can be managed through contracts coming back in trades.

I hated the Ritchie signing last summer especially with the Leafs fragile cap . Veteran Dman and sometimes winger Brendan Smith was signed by Carolina for 800,000. I wonder if Toronto boy Smith would have to have wanted play for the Leafs.

Haha jokes aside Petry is very interesting. Hes been very bad this year, but is usually really good. Hard to tell with how bad MTL is. Could be a decent idea to buy low. He does fit the bill of a RHD with term, but I think theres a little too much term

yea I didn't like the Ritchie signing the day it was made. 1 year too long in my mind. The Kampf signing threw me for a loop like everyone else, since we had no idea who he was, so I wasn't sure abouyt that one and it has ended up being great. Dubas made a bunch of great signing next to that. And Ritchie's contract is by no means crippling for this year and next and won't be too expensive to get out of.

Haha that was my thought process when I decided to make this trade proposal. I Like Petry. I Don't like his contract. I Actually don't mind his contract with full rentention. Man that would cost a lot. Let's make a trade proposal to see what I think that would look like. I should now prepare for the wolves to eat my soul. **HIT SEND**

I didn't prepare well enough for that last part it appears. hahaha.

Popular narratives like Holl is bad but has better underlying numbers than most of the players traded to TO on here daily

To be fair to you, its a LOT for Toronto to give up, but we are also asking Montreal to retain a total of ~12 million dollars. It would cost a ton and you're value is probably close, but its just too much to give up for what Petry is. Theyre stuck with that contract
