I get that Caufield is someone the Habs don't want to move, but Hughes outscored Caufield playing 2/3 as many games as Cole, so it's nowhere near a comparable value. A 1st rounder and a strong prospect is not an insulting offer for a guy like Caufield, even if you're dead set against moving him.

caufield doesnt have a price currently. him and suzuki and a few of the young dman, are not going to get moved. We have two first round picks this year why move the best scorer currently on the roster for a risk of a mid first round pick that may or may not turn into what you already have, and a prospect that is also unproven .

I don’t know why NJ’s entire prospect pool has escaped my mind. But a top 10 first and a very high prospect could possibly land Caufield considering what happened to KK. I think Drouin comes off the books when CC is up for a new contract, but I’d offer sheet the hell out of that guy

It would cost Nj's 1st and Holtz to even begin the caufield conversation

Isles wouldn't trade Beauvillier to the Devils unless its an overpay or in a package to acquire an upgrade on Beauvillier. There's no incentive to trade him for a 2nd and a B prospect.

We have lots of room to cover an OS, you could go 14 Mil and we could still cover it

weber is killin the franchise by being on LTIR? Price is either good to go or also on LTIR or possibly retiring and Drouin is enter his final year with the habs..dont see any of those three being the biggest issue. Losing Danault comes to mind as a major issue, gallagher's contract is another, sitting a franchise record for games missed by players for an entire season by game 68 of the season seems like a reason. and having price's place in net over the past decade hide the massive scoring issues the team has failed to address is another.

Price only hurts the habs if he plays and is unable to perform well enough to command starts, whcih is to be seen, Weber is irrelevant at this point and by all reports will be on Arizona's books before next season starts and Drouin can be bought out retained and moved or given one final chance n dealt at the deadline if he performs well enough.

I dont think there will be the chance to offersheet caufeild, one major different being the manangement team there now. Bergevin based a lot of his decisions off of emotion and he ruined multiple prospects development because of that, Hughes is routinely discussing the future, handing chances to the top young guys and letting them have a longer leash. I would be shocked if Caufield wasnt extended before next season finishes, if not before the season starts.

Caufield had 35 points in 38 games under St. Louis just shy of a 50 goal pace. Over the same span he had more goals than Ovechkin kucherov kreider and McDavid. He has already at 21 shown to be a high end goal scorer in the NHL why would the habs give that up for 2 ? marks that probability wise wont be nearly as good.

its not that bad though, weber is permenantly LTIR and dreger reporting that he will be shipped to arizona officially this offseason. Byron Drouin and Allen are entering their final year, thats 11.7 mil off the books next offseason, and thats without any other player movement. Armia and Hoffman could be candidates to be bought out if needed next year, and theres no major $ to be handed out this offseason aside from resigning Romanov and a few depth pieces.

Sens aren't gonna move Formenton for a 2nd+, it simply makes no sense. Unless Ottawa is landing a big fish in a trade, there's no reason whatsoever to move Formenton. He's becoming a great middle six winger, and he's not about to break the bank on an extension.

None of those kinds of trades are worth it for the non-Jersey team though.

What are you talking about? Drouin's off the books next offseason, Weber is LTIRetired (and per Dreger, the only reason he wasn't traded at the deadline is administrative/insurance payout related) and Price looks like he might be LTIRetired soon too. Montreal has some housekeeping to do, but paying Caufield is not remotely close to an issue.

LMAO, we have 14 mil in cap space on July 1st and we can exceed the cap by 8.25 Mil and that is all before we put anyone on LTIR. all we need to do to cover the bonuses and bonus overage is have about 3 mil cap space on opening day to build deadline cap. That will cover all of the bonuses and any OS that comes in. PLUS no one can OS Caufield until the 2023 offseason anyway.

The point I was making wasn't that the Habs should trade Caufield, but that someone offering a 1st round pick and a strong prospect wasn't an insulting offer. I'd also hold off on calling Caufield a "high end goal scorer" until he does it for more than half a season - that 19.3% shooting doesn't look all that sustainable going forward.

Most of the top end goal scorers (mathews Draisaitl connor stamkos etc) are all 15-18 percent career shooters so its not that far out of the expected range for a high end scorer

Caufield smashed the USNDTP goal scoring record and was 1 goal shy of a goal per game in the NCAA his last season its not like this is coming out of nowhere. He easily has the pedigree to be in that high scoring group.
