I don't have the draft pick values chart in front of me but moving a top-15 pick for essentially a trio of seconds in a shallow draft seems like bad calculus.
Problem I have with some of these chart valuations is the relative value is spread across several players. It feels kind of like a “I’ll take three OK players instead of one very good player” type calculation.

Which, for the Sharks specifically, seems immensely boneheaded. One very good player is exactly what they need over 3 okay ones.

Agreed. Depth players can always be had for cheap in trade or FA. Don’t squander your opportunity with a high-1st, even if your preferred guy is off the board.
Sharks are absolutely stupid for making this trade. No clue what they were thinking. This is exactly why they can’t win a Cup after 30+ years of existence. This is not a deep draft at all! You don’t move from #11 down to #27 for two middle 2nd round picks. Just makes ZERO sense! Soo many solid high end prospects they could’ve selected at #11. But they just ****ED IT UP. Bad look for Grier’s first GM moment.

You are overreacting. This is a very shallow draft and SJ lacked any picks between rd 1 and 4 so this makes absolute sense and frankly its a huge win

Depth players can always be had for cheap in trade or FA, and mid-round gambles can be got for little-to-nothing.
Don’t squander your opportunity with a high-1st, even if your preferred guy is off the board. It’s one thing to move a few spots back, it’s another to go down 16 picks so you can get an extra two 2nds in the same draft. Even if they were for future drafts, they could be trade capital in later years when you want/need them.

A first in one draft can be worth a lot less compared to a first in another draft.
It's why the chart I posted took into account trades at the draft from previous years.

I disagree, a few high end players make teams and it takes Drafting a developing high end players to do soo.. think of guys like Couture + Hertl who were all mid 1st round picks in not very deep drafts. They need to get the best players possible in the draft at the highest pick possible. The rest of the line up and depth players can be filled out via Trades and FA Signings

With diminished values across the Baird as well.
It’s why I pointed out obtaining 2nds in future drafts as a gain, even if they are the same spot.
And, to my previous point, I’d rather take the gamble on a 5.7 GSVA player than three gambles on three players turning into 2.0 GSVA players, when I have a high-1st. 11OA comes around less often than, say, 45OA.

Even to that point, the “this is a bad draft” narrative feels tired at this point. Smaller sample sizes, sure, but you gotta give it the requisite 3-5 years.
Every draft has its Bathersons. Every draft has its Kakko’s. Or Lafrenieres. Or…honestly, take your pick.

So, I guess if you were the Arizona Coyotes, you would have moved a low 1st and two high 2nds to draft Conor Geekie.
Never mind that some prospects that were expected to go in the 1st round will slide into the 2nd.

We've got two VERY high end prospects with Bordeleau and Eklund. Coe, Robins, Wiesblatt, Gushchin are all A-Level prospects. There are likely going to be some very good picks at 27 and 34 potentially Yurov, Lambert, Ohgren, Howard, Mesar, Bichsel, Trikizov, Rinzel etc. This trade is excellent...sorry you are wrong.

To each his own.
Absolutely great move by AZ. To quote @FunMustBeAlways “boneheaded” for SJ. If CBJ had made the same move, I wouldn’t be happy.
Fun fact about “some 1st round prospects will go in the 2nd” - it happens ever year. And unless every team decides to share its big-board, we’ll never know who each team projected where.
Maybe SJ sees Johnny McHockeySomething as a Top-5 OA player who will be available in the middle of the 2nd round. If so, good on them. Circle back in 2025 and we can discuss.
