According to ESPN Fitzy is actively seeking a hockey trade

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 9, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils GM, in a conversation with ESPN reporter, talked about potentially adding via trade market. He has been actively working the phones for a "hockey trade" (says similar to Smith for Marino move). And he sounded like rentals will be unlikely this year.

Fitzgerald has been good about keeping his moves out of the press. Only really the Graves trade was anticipated. Most of the others like Siegenthaler, Marino, Haula, etc came as a surprise.

So what has he got up his sleeve this time?

Based on what he has talked about in past, he wants:

1) Heavy skill at forward
2) Long, mobile, defensive dmen
3) Player with experince, leadership attributes
4) Multiple years of control (preferably without NMC/NTC to work around)

Names below are intended to be unexpected (since Fitzy doesn't seem to take usual suspects from ACGM).

Who else would be unexpected name that fits?

(I purposely left goalies off list...since good ones with term are hard to acquire mid-season)

Not sure that helps much as both Wood and Graves have been playing quite well.

Would be more like Pettersson for Walsh +3rd.

He is certainly long, but does Stanley qualify as 'mobile' though? I think our GM has a type on defense. Long, mobile, high IQ seems to be his recipe.

If it's not a goalie trade (maybe Vladar for a wanted roster forward+blackwood), maybe Severson for a forward like Brock Boeser or Mercer for Meier, it's time for a move that NJ fans may not like.

Don’t tell Canucks fans you’d want to offer that for Marcus Pettersson

Good to know he remembers he's a hockey gm as opposed to pursuing a baseball or football trade. wink

Pionk wouldn't be available for a rental, but Stanley might, might be available.

At this point of the season, while you have targeted good players on the Jets, I can't see Chevy making any major changes.

You say he doesn't want rentals but then ask about PLD, Neno and Hanafin all players with less than 2 years of team control. Sort of goes against the narrative doesn't it? Especially when PLD is already rumored to be only willing to sign long term with the Canadiens.

Dillon has been quite good this season, but I wouldnt mind trading him for a forward. I dont know the Devils forward situation well enough to know who would go the other way, but I think the Jets would prefer someone with a bit of skill who can move around the lineup. Re-couping the 2 draft picks they paid for him and then using that on a forward would also be a possibility. Chevy likes to sit on his hands though so I wouldn't anticipate anything

Goalies with term are rarely traded during the season.

Fitzgerald's moves have mostly been unexpected, so I am not expecting the Severson-for-Canuck-Forward trade.

I think a Meier move is tricky to do this year, unless Sharks are granting teams access to discuss an extension during the season (which would be unusual). Its more likely to be a summer move as they will have to navigate timing for arbitration windows, draft, qualifying offers, etc.

But am curious. What would be the move that NJ fans may not like?

I *still hate* the idea of moving Comtois, but putting him and Kulikov together would certainly help the Devs.

I think I want to see another coach handle Comtois before I give up on him though. Guy has a good game and then Eakins puts him on the 4th line...he plays his way back up, then Eakins puts him on the 4th line...rinse and repeat...similar handling as McTavish at C...best game of the season at C? Better fire him on the wing on the 4th line!

What would you give up?

"Hockey trade" is usually a trade that sells from a strength to add to a weakness. Like trading size for speed, or dman for forward. As opposed to a roster trade (to move contracts, make space) or futures trade (sell rentals for picks, prospects).

If true, I'd cross PLD off the list. I was trying to come up with names that aren't often connected to NJD.

They each have at least two years...which I don't consider rentals. I was avoiding pending UFAs.

Looking at players that could be available, I struggle to see who Fitzgerald may be reasonably looking at. Unless he's gone full off the deep end with a huge Dubois trade or something, I don't know where they go. (looking back at the post again, a Comtois trade could work, but I just can't see Anaheim moving him at their current state)

How has McLeod done? Is he someone that could be on the move?

Not really sure what would be an appropriate offer for Comtois.

Maybe, if we are taking the ESPN article as guide, it would be similar to Marino trade. So maybe Foote + 3rd. Or something like that. I am not sure.

I meant Mercer getting traded away, or them acquiring Boeser in an overpay or what seems to be one.

Yeah, I don't expect a goalie trade either but maybe if NJ has something that Calgary wants, Vladar will eventually be moved, and I think at this point Blackwood will probably only be healthy enough to be a back up. They have Wolf in the pipeline to take over after Markstrom but for now he's probably going to be their guy. That's why I could see Vladar being moved early.

With Palat and Blackwood out, I think they look for someone to replace either guy, since the top 6 even with Palat could use an addition, and Blackwood is injury prone.

McLeod is a role player that fits in well where he is. Helps on forecheck, faceoffs, PK. Any offense is gravy. Probably more valuable to us staying put...unless someone really liked him for some reason.

good to know. I've seen some differing opinions on him, was wondering if 3C could be a target for New Jersey, but it seems from your analysis he/Haula can fit the bill fine.

The Ducks have no reason to move Comtois, especially for a hockey trade. He has the grit that the team has sorely been lacking, seems to have rediscovered his scoring finish, and is the perfect age for the rebuilding team. Verbeek is on record saying that Comtois is exactly the kind of player he wants on the team.

Henrique may be available, with the possibility of retention. We are currently down a RHD and may be interested in Severson to try and convince him to resign with us, Bahl would also be of interest.

To me, they are rentals just slightly longer term rentals since you only get 1 potentially 2 runs with them before they hit FA. I get the premise though

Don't think there's any good reason to trade for a forward at this point in time as the current group is performing so well.
Depth isn't an issue either given that Johnsson and Holtz (and Palat) aren't even in the lineup presently.
Same could be said for the right side of the defence (but y'all knew that already).

I do think it'd be a great idea to add the right veteran LHD with term and reasonable cap hit in order to shift Smith into the 7th defenceman (and Bahl to the AHL).
There's one candidate you listed above that I'd be hoping Fitzy has his eyes on and that's Pettersson.
Getting Pettersson would in my view instantly improve the already stacked defence and serve as a ready-made replacement for Graves come 23-24.
Question is, what would the Penguins want in return?
