Why would Buffalo do that, Nybeck is the exact opposite of a prospect that the Sabres need, the Sabres have much better of his ilk in Rochester already, and im pretty sure hes falling out of favor with Carolina's management

So you don’t want a free prospect and pick??

No not really, the Sabres arent lacking either. Not like either the 5th nor Nybeck have a high % chance to make the NHL anyway. No reason to do something just to benefit another franchise. If it was a prospect that addressed Buffalo's needs, then sure

The commentary is already out there that SJ will get less for Meier than Chicago got for DeBrincat. Once the season has started, the original teams will be getting a lot less equity for retaining salary. Retaining half of Meier will almost be a cost of doing business for SJ. Take a look at some of the trades from last year (Giroux, Chiarot, Domi, etc) - you can make the claim the original team didn’t get any compensation for retaining on the players.

I really think Meier will be treated much more like a UFA rental, than a player with RFA rights due to his QO and Arb

Then the Canes just look to a myriad of other teams willing to
Facilitate trades like this - no worries if the Sabres aren’t willing.

    CORRECT
    1- it’s a weak prospect
    2- it’s a crappy pick

    Neither piece has much value

    Sabres ABSOLUTELY decline
    Not even close
We aren’t gonna take on Cap space & pay out real $$$ for mediocre pieces we aren’t interested in
    Zero chance- NONE

You're basically openly saying that you want another franchise to take on $3 mill and in return you're not willing to give them anything substantial, just a bad prospect that had a low shot at the NHL to start - and theyve already lost interest in, and an even worse pick. So I dont know which franchises are willing to jump aboard

It’s a terrible trade to begin with, the Debrincat one. To use that as a comp is isn’t appropriate. Why isn’t the Tkachuk trade used as the comp? I know Serevalli is an “insider” but if the sharks get offered less than Debrincat for Meier there’s zero reason for San jose to make that trade. Not getting a 1st or a blue chip prospect for him is just insulting.

Tkachuk isn’t a comp because the deal was in the offseason and a deal was in place for an extension. Oh, and the fact Tkachuk was a 100 point player last year.

    That Flames-Panthers trade is a unicorn…not a comp.

They may get less, but Chicago got the 7OA pick, plus a 2nd, and a future 3rd. Your 1st pick is going to be what, 24th plus? That's a MASSIVE step down in value. I imagine his deal is similar on paper to the Debrincat deal, but the 1st is a late pick instead of a top 10.

I don't think the Canes would part with a 1st in any year for Klingberg. That's the least of their needs right now and he's just not worth it. Pass, please.

I’m not sure I’m following your logic. Let’s look at it differently…

What exactly about Meier does the community believe means he will return a top level prospect and a 1st (a 2023 1st at that)?

I made this trade because I think he’s a better top 6 power forward over what the canes can ice today, not because I think he’s a future 100 point or 40 goal guy. He’s different that what the Canes have.

Probably the smart move, but I don’t think he’ll be fetching that. You’ll get your 2023 1st from Toronto when they panic and give that up for Shattenkirk.

The fact that he’s a 26 yo top power forward in the league that would have team control for 8+ years. Coming off of a 35 goal year and on pace for the same again.

Last year at the deadline Artturi Lehkonen got a 2nd and Justin Barron. That season he had 13 goals and 29 total points in 58 games at the time of the trade. Never scored 20 goals in his career in a season, never had a season with 32 points even. He was an rfa as well. Meier is far better
