Demko Comparable

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2023
Published: Feb. 7, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A Detroit supporter has suggested that Thatcher Demko for Martin Chromiak, Brandt Clarke, Cal Petersen, Alex Turcotte, and the Los Angeles 2023 first and 2023 second is a fair trade. So I thought I'd look at what a similar return from the Red Wings would look like. Of course, the draft picks are out of phase, but you get the picture.

Good Lord no. And I'm a Demko fan. Since when do goalies get this much value in trades? I remember when Detroit traded Kozlov and a 1st for Hasek. Different times and circumstances but I digress.

That's insane. Especially considering that goalies seem to have a low value in trades.

Yeah, I’m a Canucks fan and I can tell you that they’d be on speed dial trying to make the trade call official with the league office if they got either of those offers. I love (healthy) Demko, but the reality is that goalies just don’t garner huge trade returns like this.

Yeah we'll pass big time.

Goalies with hip issues are always a major concern.

That would only set back our rebuild, Not help it. That's very brutal for any team to pay.

Having said that, I want VAN to keep Demko unless they get an offer they can’t refuse.

Woof..... I wouldn't even do it for Edvinsson or Kasper, a 1st and Ned. Demko is not elite or even in the top tier (8ish goalies). No way he holds this value.

You don't like the Leafs playoff chances? Do you think the Muzzin to Kings trades are finally over?

I'm a Canucks fan and this is way too much. A Demko trade will be one for one for a pick in the 12-20 range at the draft OR a good defensive prospect.

Most of you Canuck adherents, like you and @juiceman, are reasonable and informed. It's the loons that set me off.

Historically, goalies have never returned huge packages. I think the Cory Schneider for 9th OA Bo Horvat is the closest comparable. Demko is probably a tier below Shesterkin and Sorokin, but I still wouldn't want to see him get traded.

I remember that trade. I was expecting Luongo to be traded but Schneider was dealt instead.

Yeah, I could see something in the likes of a 1st in the 12-25 range, a good not great prospect and a 3rd. Lighter than the Debrincat trade, but 3 pieces involving a 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

Is there a link for the comparable trade with LA? It’s wild seeing all of those pieces in one trade, and I’d have to imagine LA’s probably looked just as gaudy and awful.

I think the LA version might be worse for them than this one for Detroit (although the Detroit package seems more valuable to me).

Yeah, a pick around the 10th OV is usually the main return since that's where "elite" goalie prospects are typically taken. With Demko having a down year, I can't imagine him getting much more.

I just don't see a world where Demko gets a 1st, from any team. It's not a comment on his play, or his value specifically, but more on the way the league values goaltenders and 1st round picks - it just doesn't happen. Marc-Andre Fleury was the reigning Vezina winner, on a much cheaper contract, and he only got a conditional 2nd that had a *chance* at upgrading to a 1st. Darcy Kuemper got a 1st, but he was retained to a lower cap hit than Demko and his track record was much stronger. After that, you have to go back to Freddie Andersen in 2016 to see a goalie getting back a 1st round pick - teams just don't put that kind of value on a tender anymore, for better or for worse.

I think if Demko comes back and proves that the first quarter of the season was an outlier, he can get back a 2nd and a decent prospect - but that's the ceiling. I can't see any team throwing out a 1st, especially a 2023 1st, for him at this point.

Try telling that -- i.e., reasoning -- with the loons.

Cossa looks terrible if I'm being honest but hopefully that's just him getting accustomed to the pro level. It's not like Wallstedt was available or anything. But yes this trade is completely useless for the wings and a gigantic overpay.

He did make the echl all star game, so he can't be that bad. Goalies also take longer to develop, not worried at all
