    1. We need a veteran goalie that can get us to the playoffs.

    2. Fast's last two contracts suggests I'm not.

You're dreaming about getting that return for DeBrincat. Ottawa is having a cap problem if they have to QO DeBrincat, and no team is giving up two good assets for a guy who wants UFA money.

    1. Andersen is definition of mercurial
    2. Fast analytics (at least in the last couple of years and them model I'm basing it off of) suggest he's underpaid

Yeah, if you ask me, you just rooked yourself. There's a large difference between '23 8oa and the other option. HUGE.

    1. We always have Forsberg if things go horribly wrong with Andersen.
    2. We'll see what happens.

Getting #8 overall is not the main objective.

The main objective is to save face from the trade with Chicago.

And taking a bad return does that? Gosh, Maybe give him more than one season playing with a depth C.

    1. Just make sure you have a third NHL-ready goaltender for when he inevitably gets injured
    2. We will

    This.

Ottawa won't get back half the assets they traded for Cat.

A buyout for Murray saves the Leafs 4 million in cap space for next season.

And it's the #1 popular buyout on Capfriendly.

Take any Caps trade rumors with a grain of salt. Not that it's a super tight-lipped organization or anything, but the national guys pretty much ignore us, and our local media is just a bunch of junior reporters passing through on their way to bigger things who don't give enough of a **** to pry for that kind of info. I can't think of the last time we got rumors of interest in advance of a trade or a FA signing.

As for the trade, I'd pass in MacLellan's shoes. I think the down year and the ugly QO situation have tanked DeBrincat's value more significantly than this. It's certainly not a trade they'd make during the draft based on how the top 7 shake out - any team giving up this kind of price for DeBrincat is gonna need to negotiate an extension for him before they pull the trigger, and that won't happen in the middle of the draft.
