What's the over/under on Leafs fans that wanted Treliving fired or were judging him on his moves so far secretly liking this signing but will still whine about it in some ridiculous way to save face.
Toronto loves the guys that can play offense but don't know what defense is.
- Marner has come 3rd in Selke voting
- Tavares has come 8th in Selke voting
- Auston has come 10th in Selke voting
- Kampf has come 27th in Selke voting
- O'Reilly has come 1st in Selke voting (but decided to leave)
Toronto had the 7th least goals against in the NHL last season.
The guy who builds teams that lose in the first round while mortgaging the future
Can't blame him for going all in with the best regular season team in history, cmon now. If he didn't go all in and they get bounced in round 1, everyone would've been angry at him for not going all in.
Also, I think it's pretty likely Sweeney offered Bert $5.5Mx4, but Bert wanted more term and probably more AAV.
To me this signing tells me Bert wasn't going to take a slight discount to stay in BOS, found out he over estimated the FA market, and settled to play with Matthews so he can cash in next FA.
So that means Brodie is 100% gone. Only one hold up though, they are now in a weak position as Teams know they have to trade him and can strangle the leafs for more assets or little return for the leafs

Voting means about as much as All Star Appearances. Tavares is terrible defensively, the other guys are decent defensively, but that doesn't change the fact that Toronto plays offensive style hockey and sacrifices a lot of defense.

The Leafs defensive problems (in the playoffs) were a result of poor defensemen, not poor defensive forwards, in my opinion.

Taylor Hall took a similar path, only to sign with BUF instead of BOS. Safe to say that move backfired and cost Hall millions.

Why Brodie? Doesn't this mean Murray is either cap dump or LTIR? Even with Samsonov signing a 4.5x4 they should be OK without Murray's cap hit.
