Assuming the Jarnkrok/Timmins trade is a "to anyone" type of deal, but it certainly can't be LA. No cap space to just take a 3mil dump without equal cap going out the other way.

Avs can't afford to tie down another 9 plus player. The value here is a little Toronto-heavy (i'd swap Lehky for someone like Ben Meyers), but I think it's close. Again, Avs shouldn't do this mainly out of Nylander's cap cost.

There are so many reasons the Avs decline this.

If the AVS could manage it, their top 6 would be lights out. What a PP too.

There is no reason to do sign-and-trade unless it’s 8-year extension.

I guess Nichuskin and his 30 games a season is a better fit going forward. My bad

He actually is, as evidenced by the Cup he helped the team win. But beyond that, the Avs already have their stars making 9M+ in MacKinnon, Rantanen, and Makar. They aren't going to blow up their depth to add another one.

On top of those reasons, Byram simply isn't available. He's going to be an anchor on D for the next decade. You know that, as you have him on the top pairing. Adding a first makes this is a big overpay for Nylander. It's not even palatable if you take that pick out.

Smoking high in Toronto favor. COL isn’t trading Byram for Nylander straight up even if he was extended which don’t get me started on, take Byram out and it’s closer

Oh joy the Avs could make a trade where their defense ends up being Makar Girard and 4 guys named Ed next year. COL wouldn’t do Byram for Nylander straight up how you get Lilijreb is worth a 1st Lehkonen and Jack Johnson is ridiculous

Oh, for sure I agree that we wouldn't even do it straight-up. If I take my Avs hat off and put myself in the seat of a Leafs fan, this is what they truly want for Nylander. And I don't blame them. I don't think they'll get it, but I don't blame them for wanting it.

Wingers just don’t have the value to ask for that package outside of maybe 7 guys in the league and Nylander isn’t one of them. Overpaying wingers is a cardinal recipe for cap problems.

Avs fans are funny. I thought my Leaf fans over valued their players. If you don’t like Willy and his cap, I get it but saying he isn’t worth a Byram is a bit much. Once Nichuskin gets hurt again, it won’t sound so bad.

You are not listening to the commenters if that’s what you're taking away from this. Today, Nylander is much better than Byram, nobody is disputing that. Wingers are less valuable than defensemen, but Nylander is very good!

But the Avs already pay premium contracts to MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen, and likely are looking to re-sign Toews. Giving up a cost controlled 22 year old RFA who plays top 4 minutes and hasn’t hit his ceiling is dumb. That’s exactly the value contract that you need to contend when you have a top heavy team.

This trade in particular is bad because you also have the Avs giving up a cost effective top 6 player in Lehkonen. Not to mention the additional 1st (and Jack Johnson… for some reason?) Try to make a cap compliant 2024 roster for the Avs after this trade. It’ll be significantly worse than if they just kept their own players.

Took the words right out of my mouth. Current Nylander is definitely better than current Byram, but it's about the money and the contracts.

Valuing players on a forward looking basis is not a tough concept, but it's leads to a lot of familiarity bias. Bet the OP would change their tune if there was a Knies, Liljegren, and a first for Toews or something like that. But also it's not understanding the roster/cap outlook of the trade partner (Avs in this case). Certainly that's not easy to do for every team. Some fans are homers, but many also know their team's situation pretty good. Gotta distinguish and then listen to the latter if you want to get anything from these boards imo.

Knies, Lily and a 1st for Toews wouldn’t make much sense for the Leafs cap. At least my numbers added up for both teams.
I get it, Nylander isn’t right for the Avs. All I’m saying is if Byram and Lehkonen are on Columbus who needs offence, this trade isn’t unreasonable with Lily included.

The cap wasn't the point of the hypothetical. There would be ways to make the cap work, but it's not worth thinking about since it's not going to happen anyway.

Nylander is a great player who would make any team's top 6 better, but organizations simply don't give up guys like Byram unless they have a giant hole that really needs filling. That's not the case in Colorado. There may have been an argument before the Avs filled out their roster, but they are flush with wingers and are hoping to get Landeskog back. The only way they even consider moving Byram is if they find RyJo and/or Colton can't carry the load at 2C. And even then, I think they do everything possible to address the need without moving a guy with that much upside.

Obviously you can disagree, but it's not a reasonable trade. Upgrading from Lehkonen to Nylander is not worth what you're asking the Avs to give up.
