Devon Toews deals a steal

Should get 4-5 good years out of it.

If he went to market 9m could have been waiting

Now that said it also to me spells the end of Girard beyond this season

As if Landeskog comes back 2024-2025 Avs will have only 3.1m to work with on top of needing to sign 4 players to meet the minimum requirements for a roster (20man)

So yea if hes back next draft could see a Girard trade

Girard stays, Manson goes.

While on paper they may see yearly losses here and there ya.
BUT other than ARZ - they're all sitting on "billion-dollar-asset" teams/bldgs/land really (see OTT sale as a recent example).

The ol' boys/gals need to alter the structure some - ie: luxury tax or franchise tag a player per club that's been drafted-developed and is CAP-exempt, or ___________!

Bill Guerin said today/paraphrase that any deals start w/ CAP checks first...
$ in = $ out

Hard disagree, the cap’s fine right now and if there’s one think I like about the NHL, it’s that we have a hard cap, imo, every league should have a hard cap because we get better parity and it makes it a lot more interesting

Manson's got a NTC

Now yes in 2024 hes got a M-NTC but is making 4m in actual dollars. His final year makes him easy to move but they cant wait that long.

Girard doesnt have any trade protection till making him easier to move

And that could be the plan. As they have been tempted before. Get a nice package for him and go from there.

M NTC Manson better show he worth 4.5m this season,,,,and he has two years after this season. If he slows down now that he is 32 years of age, he may be an impossible move

Yeah, I'm not thinking of a monumental shift, just a tweak or one-off concession to allow clubs to put 23-real NHLers on the ice (Solid top-9F, quality top-6D & a decent NHL-goalie)...
I don't want the NBA 'babies' style of team construction that's for sure - leave daycare for the real kids.

For COVID they altered the entire league to get things done and games played.
I just think that post-COVID, they should have gotten off their wallets and done the same for an updated, more realistic CAP $.

Every club has 23 real NHLers, they all went through training camp and all forced their ways onto rosters, more cap space wouldn't change that, the player pool would still be the same

Because the league wants to make money, increasing the cap only works if teams make a profit overall, if teams aren’t making a profit, the cap won’t go up due to owners not wanting to lose too much money

Players are still paying off their COVID-debts to the owners via escrow. NHL offered to raise the cap awhile back if players would increase their escrow withholdings to cover it, and the players said no. I don't think most of them understand the escrow and how the revenue split works, tbh.

Logan Cooley should give Bedard a run for his money…(if not be the outright favorite)…looks legit.

There is a 2 week window from June 15 to June 30 in 2024 where Manson's NTC converts to a 12-team M-NTC and before Sam Girard's 9 team M-NTC kicks in. If ever one of them is getting moved it will be during that time period. I really loved it when we got Manson at the deadline and what he brought to team; but I was not really excited about extending him; felt we could go after someone cheaper/younger/hungrier (now that he had won a Cup). Seems like every team has some physical defensive RHD on too big of a contract on their roster; hockey's version of a "bubble" market for sure.

The only way I would be OK with moving Girard is if one of Sean Behrens or Mikhail Gulyayev is ready for the NHL but that is too soon for them to make that jump. Manson is replaceable on the market; I just hope he has some trade value next year (or at least not too expensive of a dump).

I dont think Manson is really replaceable on the market as there arent many big physical guys like him available.

And the ones who are will cost around the same look what big physical Dman got paid last FA

Oh for sure, that's why I referred to them as "hockey's bubble". There are always guys popping up like Vinny Desharnais, Jani Hakanpaa, Will Borgen, Jake Middleton, Ilya Lyubushkin, or Jonathan Kovacevic that can provide that from a 3rd line role. Paying those guys off their peak season to be in the top 4 usually seems to backfire and become a cap issue (Tyler Meyers, Colton Parayko, Jacob Trouba (going forward), Jeff Petry and even guys like Justin Holl, Erik Gudbranson, Cody Ceci, David Savard, Jan Rutta, Radko Gudas, and Scott Mayfield who should be 3rd liners but are paid as second pair guys.

That's why I wanted the Avs to sign Cal Foote and put him in the AHL for a year so he would be ready to step into the 3rd line role next year if we had to move someone out.

The one thing Dorion probs wishes he could redo is the Gustavsson trade

As if Gustavsson was there over Korpisalo or Talbot the Sens could have Pinto rn at 2m with no LTIR Norris

Would require no Hamonic and 20 man team but it was doable

Starting to get the feeling a trade may occur.

Florida's defense is just bad. Their forwards are going to get exhausted trying to cover for them

You think w/ McAvoy's million$ he could buy a "Tuukka Tutor" and work on his "shot"!

Can't hit the ocean shooting pucks from the end of a bloody wharf that guy...

Easy to say in hindsight. Gus wouldn't have hit the gear he is at now with the Sens. Probably would've left anyways. Talbot was good, just not what the team needed. Trade didn't work out at all, but it's not like the Sens would've been competitive with Gus in net regardless
