From The Core Four To Only One

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2024
Published: May 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The more I think about it the more it's clear that Nylander should be traded as well as Marner and JT. Only bring back one member of the core four, the only one that really matters, the MVP.

I just don't think it's wise to pay a winger over 11 million when he even isn't the face of your team. Nylander is not Kucherov or Panarin. The leader of this team is Matthews. He'll be making 13 million plus next year, the biggest contract in the league. The second highest paid player should be making significantly less, not 2 million less. And obviously Nylander is worth his contract on most teams, but not this team. He should be traded along with Marner and Tavares. Use the cap space, picks and prospects acquired in the trades to build a contender around Matthews.

Trading 3 of our best players and having Stolarz as our number 1 goalie is interesting

It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for 'em.

It's really a terrible thought. Tavares isn't waiving to Buffalo, and Buffalo doesn't make the trade. Nylander isn't waiving to Ducks....and Ducks don't make the trade anyway.
Marner could be traded but I doubt he gets that good return, otherwise teams just wait till UFA.

There isn't a number 1 on the market. And the only available goalies via trade are Markstrom and Saros, which will require a hefty price to get. So I doubt the Leafs will do much better than Stolarz and Woll. It's a capable tandem.

With that extra 8th year teams can sign Marner on a cheaper AAV. So the Leafs have some leverage.

It's not like the Hawks are getting great value by signing Marner to 12m X 8....and to give up the picks too.

Just to add to your comment, there are "lots" of Stolarz type goalies as UFAs this summer. Think the Leafs will snag one, and hope that tandem does well. Stolarz is a New Jersey native, so I think he has better chance of signing with the Devils who seem to same goalie situation as the Leafs.

I don't believe CHI should be interested in Marner for any long term purpose, and probably not for any short term purpose either. Plus, they don't need him next year. So if there is interest, they could just wait and see if he hits free agency. Which means I doubt they are willing to spend anything like this on him. I guess it's possible, but adding another almost 30 year old with a large contract with term doesn't seem like a Kyle Davidson move to me.

Marner is 26 I think. He's in his prime. Bedard could use help. Chicago has to make some proactive moves. You can't just tank every year and believe the team will be a contender at the end of it. Look at Buffalo. They drafted 1st twice, 2nd once, and they still haven't made the playoffs. Making trades and signing big name free agents have to be part of the team building as well.

He is 27. He will be 28 when that 8 year extension begins. Stop gaps can still be proactive. I doubt KD is gonna do anything long term, though.

I tend to agree about signing long term contracts to players when they are in their late 20s or older. Thinking it's especially true for Dman as they seem to hit the wall sooner and suddenly.
Leafs have seen in Brodie this season, Tavares, and Holl with the Wings. Couture and Couterier were signed at their peak, and seem to be on the decline with lots of term left on their contracts.
Marner might hold up due to great skating but 12m might be his value but probably not great value. Folks on CF are talking about Draisaitl and getting 15m in 25/26. He'll be 30 years of age then, and to me signing him long term would be iffy too.

PS. Thanks for writing earlier that I was "fair" in my comments. I try to be objective with my comments and I always welcome honest, logical thoughts from my CF friends.

If Marner is on board with an extension in Chicago, there's a deal to be made. But the two picks would likely be the Leafs '25 1st and '26 2nd from the McCabe trade going back to Toronto.

Of course. It can be hard to be civil here on CF. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed by the casual morons on here that I end up lashing out at the wrong people. I can't always remember everyones usernames that have been cool in the past and I mix them up with the meat heads. But I also try to be civil and fair most of the time.

I think the Leafs should take that deal. Not having Marner sure helps the Leafs in 24/25. For instance with Marner you can have 11m Marner and two 2m players.
Leafs would be better IMO having two 5m Dmen and a 5m winger.
