Not to mention PLD expects a contract that begins with an "8".

Move up
Sorry, but this makes no sense to me. You're trading a 3rd overall (Dach) and a 5th overall for another 3rd overall. I could see this for Bedard or even Fantili, maybe, but Smith and Carlson aren't nearly worth this kind of trade.

Habs would probably say no unless the PLD thing happens. Otherwise, Dach is part of the future.

clean up bad contracts
I'm not sure why you have Jake Allen for Casey DeSmith, but Edmundson, Armia and a 4th for Carter would be a cap gift to the Habs, I suspect.
If the Caps want Hoffman, but I don't want Mantha if the cap hit is going to be $7.5M (his $6M plus $1.5M from Hoffman). Mantha is not part of the future, so why waste money and development time on him?

Crazy
I don't think this addresses Toronto's desperate need for D, nor does it maximize Marner's value. The team needs two top-4 defencemen and Marner is the best card they hold. it would be a waste to use him to get PLD and another middle-six forward. Matthews needs to be re-signed or this team implodes, pure and simple. Failing that, the Leafs have the same problem with Matthews as the Jets have with PLD. Once Matthews is figured out, the Leafs can figure out whether they're going all in or rebuilding from a position of strength.

I am a Habs fan and I agree with you. The Pens have a very short window to capitalize on Sid and Malkin, so it's not clear how this trade helps that much. Anderson would be a good addition, but he's not a top-line RW. Edmundson is fine, but is he that much better than Rutta? So you're giving up Poulin, who hasn't developed as well as hoped but is not yet a bust, and a first-rounder?!!! I mean, as a Habs fan, thanks!!

Do you see this PLD move as a one-year, or are you signing him for 8 years and trading him? In that case, would he accept Minnesota?

PLD Trade Chevy has to face facts

Agreed, but I doubt there are 4-5 teams offering to take PLD for 8 years after having seen him demand to be traded twice already. It's very possible PLD has soured on the idea of coming to Montreal after the club didn't drop everything and trade for him last year, at which point Boston, NYR and a few others might seriously test the waters.

I agree it's not a big haul, but it's an appropriate haul given the circumstances. Beck is a stud. I'd be open to sending Harris or Struble instead of Norlinder. Harris is absolutely NHL ready, whereas Struble is a seriously good athlete but needs more development. I don't think Norlinder's top will end up being good enough. If Harris were the choice, I'd drop the #31 pick to the #37.

Sorry, but that horsepoop. They are both excellent prospects, but Smith is an electrifying offensive talent and a wizard with the puck who pairs well with Gaudreau. Carlson is a big, powerful two-way centre in the classic Swede mode. He's not a great skater, which is why no one is saying he's the second coming of Mats Sundin. He's a very good player who can be a foundational piece on an already good team. But in terms of lighting up the scoreboard, Smith is the much better option.

That's an awfully generous "face facts" for Chevy. That's 4 NHL pieces for a player who, at most, they can control for one more year. If anyone needs to face facts, it's probably PLD. Does he want maximum dollars or does he want to be a king of Montreal? Chances are, he won't get both. And if the salary is too high, the compensation back to WPG will be minimal.

Regardless of you taking Lucic back, CGY can’t afford Anderson next season and Wolf might be one of the Flames “Untouchable Prospects”</div></div>
I don't know quite what to make of the CGY trade, but while I agree with Anderson's value to a lot of teams, I don't see him being as useful to Calgary as he would be to some other teams. I doubt he would fare all that well under Sutter either (maybe he would, but inconsistency is not something Sutter tends to ignore).
And, for WPG, I don't get it at all. I like PLD, but why would Montreal pay so much for a player who'll be a UFA and leaving WPG anyway? And, if one were to pay FOUR assets to get one of the league's emerging centremen, why would you then move him to the wing?

If the Habs were to make this trade, it would be for something a lot better than a 2nd rounder. Vegas needs to figure out its season and there are a half-dozen goalies out there who are both reliable and available. The Habs can hope Price is healthy, but if he's not, the season is shot anyway. They might as well get a great deal for Allen and aim to suck again this season. The payoff for being a lottery team next summer is pretty great.

I think Montreal would be willing to make that deal. It's essentially Dach and what should be a late first for Dubois with a long-term contract (that's how I read this). Sending Kidney to get Hoffman off the books is a little steep, but a future pick could be added to balance this if Kidney shows signs of becoming a future star.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fire_Ducharme</b></div><div>When will Jets fans get through their heads they are in a position of weakness with Dubois, you ain’t getting none of our good young players in exchange when we can get him for free in 2 years.</div></div>
I think the degree of leverage the two teams have depends entirely on what degree of urgency the Habs' brass feels. If the Habs want to forego the misery of another bottom-5 finish, getting Dubois now would be a benefit. They would still likely miss the playoffs and draft a potentially very good player in the 10 to 15 range. If the goal is to tank another year and get a high lottery pick in 2023 (Bedard, Fantilli, etc) the math changes because there's a good chance they'd be drafting a centreman in that case. In that case, having Suzuki, Dubois and (dare to dream) Bedard is not tenable. In that case, A Suzuki-for-Dubois trade sooner than later starts to make sense.
