My Team Canada Olympic Roster

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 14, 2020
Published: Nov. 14, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A couple of hot takes:

1. I am expecting a bounce-back season from Taylor Hall in which he goes back to playing at a superstar level.

2. I committed Steven Stamkos from the starting lineup cuz I'm not sure if he will be able to maintain his health by 2022. If he does, he shall replace Lafreniere.

It's for 2022. If he pans out, there's a good chance he'll make it.

I don't think Canada would take Hall, not enough of a team player. O'Reilly would probably get in.

I would think Chabot gets in and Spurgeon is dropped. Canada usually likes their defenseman to play their strong side.

The guys in charge of Team Canada tend to prefer pairing up young guys with older guys to show them the ropes. In that spirit I see your goaltending duo as unlikely. I think Price will get 1 more run to usher Hart into the role as the new starter for Team Canada.

I think theres a chance Tavares doesnt start at center. I think in 2 years Point is gonna be better and ROR might be a better option as a better two way player.

Not sure about Hart, pretty sure they'll take Price over Hart unless he has a phenomenal year this upcoming season, pretty sure they'll take Makar over Spurgeon, Parayko over Hamilton, good chance that Tavares takes the wing, pretty good team though

Looks tough!! Americans are in trouble. Hope the Americans can take home a Silver!!

J.Towes might still make the team though. All-Star teams/ Olympic pick the older guys. Drew Doughty will definitely make it too over some of those young guys.

I think Barzal gets a extra F spot at least. Lafreniere will have a year to prove himself. Will it be enough? I would have Chabot in. Hall, Makar maybe. IMO you go with 2/4 of the best between Hart, Price, Binnington and Kuemper. Believe it will end up being Hart and Price.

Zero chance Weber makes it in 2022. On wide ice too? Yeah no thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I think if Hall can play at the same level he did during his 1st three seasons in New Jersey, he’ll definitely be good enough to make it.

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t think Tavares has enough skating ability or feistiness to play on the wing whereas Point does, so that’s why I put them where they are.

I think Stamkos, RoR, and Marner make it over Lafreniere, Hall, and 37yo Bergeron. RoR-Point-Stone is gonna be an incredible shutdown 3rd line that's still better offensively than most countries' first line lol. Couturier/Scheifele/Barzal fight for the last roster spot. Chabot also kicks Spurgeon off the team and the goalies will be Price/Hart/Kuemper imo. There's a chance Parayko makes it over Hamilton for more of a defensive presence but not completely sold on that yet.

Yeah I think it’s a bit risky to bet on Lafreniere establishing himself as a rookie. He won’t get a lot of ice time next season & his linemates will be pretty weak. Doesn’t seem like a recipe for success honestly, but his pedigree is very high.

Thanks for the feedback. I can see the argument Stamkos over Lafreniere & ROR over Bergeron, but for me, Hall will make the team if he can get back to his best level.

My personal opinion is that Tavares should not be on the starting roster. I know he plays for the Leafs...so Canada would probably revolt if he wasn't, but all things considered...he hasn't been impressive on the Leafs IMO. (When talking about Olympic quality players!) He'd be my 13th forward. I'd put Bergeron and Marchand on the 3rd line together. Great chemistry and both very responsible 2-way players and have a speedy Point as their RW. I know that you've already brought up Stamkos' injury history. I agree with the caveat...I'd have him as the #1RW. Then if he's injured put Tavares as wing. I'm probably in the minority here, but I DO think Laf makes the team. Typically programs like to start early with the "hand the torch"...get 1 young guy some experience. It's not like he's going to be on the #1 PP dominating minutes or anything. 4th line LW (his natural position) makes sense to me. Again, this could be where Tavares goes. I'd also 100% put Toews on the team. Swiss army knife. Ultimate utility guy. Not starting, but there in case.

I'd I'd also keep more natural D positions. Chabot and Makar on the 2nd line and then Reilly Ekblad 3rd pair. I'd drop Douggie to being the 7th Dman.

I like that you removed Price from the team. I know he has history with team Canada, but he'll be 35 and it's not like he's been a tremendous player lately...two years later??? It's just time to move on. I like Hart there. He'll get better and play very meaningful playoff minutes in the upcoming seasons.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't really agree with your take on Tavares cuz personally, I think he's done a phenomenal job since joining the Leafs. In 2018/19, he played at the level of a top 5 center in the league. He was very good again this season in terms of driving offence, but his low shooting percentage caused him to go under a point per game. I think he doesn't stand out to a lot of people cuz his skating is not particularly impressive & he doesn't contribute defensively, but he's actually extremely effective at generating scoring chances. You can check his stats here:

Marner over J.T. easily...goal scoring won't be a problem on team Canada, creativity and play making during the "no body contact" Olympics is by far more important, also defensive ability. Whether you like to admit it or not, Marner is one of the Leafs top 3 defensive forwards.

My god how does everyone overate Dougie Hamilton ? Oh yea that’s right everyone just looks at the point totals online and never watch him play. He should be a forward there’s absolutely ZERO chance he’s on team Canada .. Price will still be one of the best goalies in the league in two years, not sure how you left him out. I would have Marner out there too, they’ll want solid two way players . Overall good team, I don’t think Alex makes it though there’s too many solid veterans in his way. I don’t think Doughty is finished yet,he’s been on some terrible kings teams, I still see him making the team . Good effort though, I like Hart being picked

Thanks for the feedback. I know Marner brings more defensively than Tavares but Tavares is a top 10 center in the league. Impossible to leave him out.
