Unpopular opinion: John Tavares ruined the Maple Leafs future

Reasons:
Cap hit: 11 Million dollars could have been spent elsewhere. Pasta, Marchand, Bergeron make under 20 mil. Matthews, Tavares and Marner make 33 mil
Positional fit: Half their cap space is going to 4 forwards. Paying 2C 11 Mil is not good.
Timeline: Leafs had one of the brightest futures in the league and had a huge timeline to win a cup. After JT signing, they are in win now mode and haven't had success. Their timeline to win is getting shorter and shorter

Unpopular would be saying: paying players over 10 mil in a hard cap is fine.

Very few players are actually worth that "double digit" cap hit. AND even then, you can just look at Boston or COL and go; why?

Crosby, Marchand, Berg, MacK - all know legacy is better and become a superstar brings in cash. I love player getting paid/ their worth but these guys who buy in are set up for success.

Thats why I wish we used some sort of luxury cap like the NBA. Comes with its own cons and the NHL has a decent balance/ competitiveness that comes with hard cap.

Said it before but Toronto didn't have the luxuries of timing that Colorado and Boston had. Look at the statlines for MacKinnon, Pastrank and Marchand when they signed their deals then look at when Matthews and Marner signed theirs.

So many people don't seem to get this. They point to COL and BOS as the 'model', when they are the exception. It's not like other teams/GMs look at the way those guys are performing relative to their contracts and go "f*ck, why didn't I think of that sh*t"
